Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma said on Tuesday that he has just 13 players to choose from for the final ODI match against Australia in Rajkot. Shubman Gill was not available for selection after the squad was hit by a viral sickness while fast bowlers Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami along with all-rounder Hardik Pandya opted to go back home. While there is not much tension among the team management as the side has already sealed the three-match series against Australia, they would like all the players to regain match fitness in time for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023.

“We have got a lot of players who are sick and not available, a lot of players have personal problems so they have gone home and a few of the guys have been rested as well. We have got 13 players at this point in time,” said Rohit during the pre-match press meet.

“Obviously, Gill has been rested, Shami, Hardik and Shardul have all gone home…again, personal things. Axar, obviously, is not available for this game,” Rohit said.

Rohit said the viral sickness going around the group too has added to the uncertainty.

“There is a bit of viral going around in the team as well. So, there is a lot of uncertainty in the team at this point in time which we cannot help,” he added.

Axar Patel is recuperating at NCA from the left quadricep injury that he suffered during the Asia Cup.

“Looking at the next few weeks it is quite important for us to look after the players and their well-being.”

“So, it is okay for them to be at home at this point — the reason being we want everybody to be fresh during the World Cup and hopefully they can come back fresh,” he said.

India vs Australia Live Score: Focus on Shreyas Iyer

India’s designated number 4 Shreyas Iyer, whose fitness came under the scanner in the Asia Cup even though he was coming back from a long injury-lay off, has not been able to get time in the middle due to different reasons. While a back spasm ruled him out of the business end of Asia Cup, an avoidable run out on Friday ended his nervy 8-ball stay in the centre. The right-hander will be hoping for a bagful of runs in the coming two games which would make him and his team feel much better going into the global event.

Mohammed Shami (L) and Ravindra Jadeja© AFP

Mohammed Shami was the top performer for the Indian cricket team during the first ODI encounter as he took a brilliant five-wicket haul to restrict Australia to 276 on Friday. He was quite impressive during his first spell and he came up in the death overs to clean up the tail-enders. The weather and humidity in Mohali left a number of Indian cricketers in slight discomfort and when the commentators asked Shami about the conditions after the innings, his hilarious response left everyone in splits.

“You guys were in the AC, I was there out in the heat. There was not much the fast bowlers were getting out of the wicket so the slower deliveries were a good option to turn to. If they land in the right areas, the results can really go in your favour. It’s important to mix things up. It’s good feeling to get wickets when you’re putting in so much effort. It’s good for the team and your own confidence.”

Shami displayed his artistry with impressive figures of 5 for 51, reminding all and sundry of his skills while helping India restrict Australia to 276 in the first ODI on Friday.

Shami, who doesn’t seem to feature in India’s first XI plans for the World Cup, literally made a statement with his second five-wicket haul in ODIs.

His performance also put tremendous pressure on the weakest link among pacers Shardul Thakur (0/78 in 10 overs), who has been selected in the 15, primarily due to his batting skills.

Shardul would consider himself unlucky that Shreyas Iyer dropped a dolly at mid-off when David Warner had hardly got off the blocks.

In conditions conducive for batting, India skipper KL Rahul opted to bowl and Shami was literally unplayable in his opening spell, and then came back to remove a set Steve Smith (41 off 60 balls) in a short second stint, to disturb the visiting team’s momentum.

Stockily built wicketkeeper Jos Inglis (45 off 45 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (29 off 21 balls) added 62 runs for the sixth wicket to take Australia past 250-run mark but it was certainly below par as Shami got Stoinis in the nick of time to put the brakes on their scoring.

India’s Predicted XI vs Bangladesh: Rohit Sharma To Make 3-4 Changes For Asia Cup Match? https://artifexnews.net/indias-predicted-xi-vs-bangladesh-rohit-sharma-to-make-3-4-changes-for-asia-cup-match-4391576/ Fri, 15 Sep 2023 04:38:31 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/indias-predicted-xi-vs-bangladesh-rohit-sharma-to-make-3-4-changes-for-asia-cup-match-4391576/ Read More “India’s Predicted XI vs Bangladesh: Rohit Sharma To Make 3-4 Changes For Asia Cup Match?” »

With a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final sealed, the Indian cricket team take on Bangladesh in an inconsequential match, their last in the Super 4 stage of the tournament. The two finalists have been decided, with Sri Lanka beating Pakistan in a thriller to book their progression. Bangladesh’s fate, on the other hand, has already been sealed, and they are no longer in the race to qualify for the final. The match, hence, offers the Indian team the perfect opportunity to test its bench strength.

In a similar inconsequential match against Afghanistan in the 2018 Asia Cup, Rohit Sharma decided to rest a lot of players including himself. The match saw MS Dhoni playing his last game for India as a skipper. Could a similar decision be on the cards this time too?

With Shreyas Iyer rejoining the Indian team in the nets on the eve of the Bangladesh clash, he is expected to break into the playing XI. The likes of Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, etc. could also be handed chances to showcase their credentials.

The Indian team management does have an eye on the ODI World Cup. The Bangladesh clash offers the team a fine opportunity to look at some of the future stars and those who are making returns from injuries.

Hardik Pandya, being an all-rounder, could be one of the first names to be rested considering his workload. With Tilak Varma also looking to sharpen his bowling skills, he could be tested to fill the void left by Hardik. However, if Hardik is benched, Shardul could be included in the team in order to give the team enough seam bowling options.

Probable XI:Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(wk), Tilak Varma/Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel/Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj/Prasidh Krishna

India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey on Thursday said the return of Jasprit Bumrah has strengthened their pace unit and it is pleasing to have four fully-fit fast bowlers going into next month’s World Cup. During the recent tour to Ireland, Bumrah wore India colours after a long injury layoff, and impressed with his intensity during the ongoing Asia Cup as well. “We have been following Bumrah’s progress from the NCA, and we are very happy with the report that we have got.

“Now, we have four quality bowlers, and it is always great to have those options. The problem of plenty is always good,” Mhambrey said ahead of India’s final Super 4 match against Bangladesh on Friday.

However, India’s first-choice pace attack is now centred around Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Hardik Pandya, forcing the management to bench Mohammed Shami.

“It’s not very easy to drop someone like Shami. The experience that he has and the performance that he has done for the country is phenomenal. It’s never easy to have that kind of a conversation (dropping a player),” he said.

Mhambrey said while it was a difficult choice, the player concerned has been conveyed clearly about the team decision.

“But we are clear in the way we have gone about the conversation with the players and they have shown confidence in us.

“Players know any decision that we take and they know that it is for the benefit of the team,” said Mhambrey.

The former India pacer was also delighted to see the strides Pandya has taken as a bowler in recent times.

“I am very happy with the way Hardik has shaped up, something that we have worked on for a long time. We have been managing his workload, making sure that he is fit and able to achieve what we expect out of him.

“Once he hits 140 kmph he is a different bowler. From the team perspective it’s a wicket-taking option that we have,” added Mhambrey.

Mhambrey also said the Indian team has undertaken the process of developing the bowling skills of some batsmen, so that they have more options to choose from when needed.

Tilak Varma features prominently in that scheme.

““I have been working with Tilak since his U-19 days. We were in South Africa and we realised he has bowling skills. We are working on it consistently.

“If the captain gets confidence that he can bowl one over and deliver, this one over can turn into two overs. But it depends on circumstances where we need that extra bowler,” he said. PTI UNG AH AH

The 15-member squad of Team India for the upcoming ODI World Cup was announced on Tuesday. The squad turned out to be the expected one as the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul and others were picked again while there was no place for wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. Apart from him, Mumbai Indians star batter Tilak Varma, who rose to fame with his heroics in the T20Is against West Indies, was also not included in the team for the marquee event.

The ODI World Cup 2023 will kick-start from October 5 in Ahmedabad. Let’s have a look at the performances of India’s 15-member squad in the 50-over format in one year. (All stats are from September 3, 2022 to September 3, 2023)

Rohit Sharma: The India skipper has been inconsistent with his form as he struggled to get runs on numerous occasions. In last one year, he has played 12 ODI matches and scored 472 runs. He has smashed one century, which came against New Zealand in January 2023. However, in ODI World Cup 2019, Rohit emerged as the highest run-scorer with a whopping total of 648 runs in just nine matches. He will look to repeat his heroics in the upcoming World Cup in India as well.

Shubman Gill:The last 12 months had been phenomenal for Shubman Gill as the young opener reached new heights in the 50-over format. In 19 matches that he played, Gill scored 948 runs at an average of 55.76. He has smashed three centuries and three half-centuries. However, his biggest feat came against New Zealand in January this year, when he brought up his maiden double hundred.

Virat Kohli:The star India batter roared back to form in 2022 after battling through his lean patch. Virat Kohli went ahead like a beast and broke several records in all three formats. Talking about the ODIs, the 34-year-old batter has played 14 matches and 558 runs at an average of 46.50. He has smashed three centuries, out of which, two came against Sri Lanka in January this year. Apart from this, he has also scored one half-century.

Ishan Kishan: The young wicketkeeper-batter also had the time of his life in the ODI format in the last 12 months. Kishan scored a whopping total of 632 runs in 12 matches, in which he brought up his maiden double hundred. It was the fastest 200 scored by any batter as it came in just 126 balls against Bangladesh in December 2022. Apart from this, he has scored five half-centuries at an average of 57.45.

KL Rahul:The last one year had been quite low for KL Rahul as the 31-year-old batter was down with injuries. In May 2023, he picked up a calf-injury during the Indian Premier League match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Later, he was named in Asia Cup squad but had to miss out on the first two matches due to a niggle. Talking about his performance, Rahul has played only 9 ODIs and scored 321 runs at an average of 45.85. His stats are also laced with three half-centuries.

Suryakumar Yadav: The T20I batting maestro had a very disappointing year when it comes to the ODI format. Suryakumar Yadav played 13 matches and could only score 171 runs, with the highest score being 35 against West Indies. The 32-year-old batter will now look for redemption in the upcoming World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer:The 28-year-old batter had a brilliant year in terms of ODI cricket as he smashed 537 runs in 13 matches. He has scored one century and three half-centuries, at an average of 53.70. Iyer will definitely be an asset for Team India in the ODI World Cup.

Hardik Pandya: The star all-rounder has been appointed as Rohit’s deputy in the marquee event. In past one year, Hardik has given a decent performance in the ODIs with both the bat and ball. He has played 12 matches and scored 367 runs, at an average of 36.70. Apart from this, he scalped 10 wickets, with the best figures of 3/44 against Australia in March.

Axar Patel: The 29-year-old all-rounder had a below average outing with both bat and ball. Axar scored 140 runs in eight matches and scalped only five wickets. His highest score was 56 which came against Bangladesh in December, last year.

Ravindra Jadeja: The star all-rounder has played only seven matches in the 50-over format in the last 12 months. He has scored 127 runs at an average of 31.75. Apart from this, Jadeja has also taken five wickets, with the best figures of 3/37 against West Indies. He will definitely aim for a better performance in the World Cup.

Shardul Thakur: The pace all-rounder has played 15 matches and scored only 94 runs. However, he gave a decent performance with the ball as he scalped 22 wickets, including a four-wicket haul and two three-wicket hauls.

Kuldeep Yadav: The left-arm wrist spinner had been really impressive in the last 12 months. Kuldeep has played 16 matches and scalped 29 wickets, including two four-wicket hauls and three three-wicket hauls. His best figures of 4/6 came against West Indies in July, this year.

Mohammed Shami: The veteran pacer has played only eight matches in the last 12 months and scalped 10 wickets. He has also registered two three-wicket hauls, with the best figures of 3/17 against Australia. He will definitely strengthen India’s pace attack with his perfect yorkers.

Mohammed Siraj: The last one year had been really impressive for Mohammed Siraj as the 29-year-old pacer played 15 matches and scalped a whopping total of 30 wickets. Siraj has also registered two four-wicket hauls and three three-wicket hauls. His best figures of 4/32 came against Sri Lanka in January, this year.

Jasprit Bumrah: The star India pacer was struck with injury for the past one year. He has only played one ODI and that too against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2023, where he did not get any opportunity to bowl. After battling through his injury, Bumrah is all set to showcase his blistering pace in the ODI World Cup in October.

India’s opening Asia Cup 2023 match against Pakistan was washed, but not before Rohit Sharma‘s batting unit had posted 266 runs on the board. Though a similar threat looms large on the Indian team against Nepal too, the skipper and the team management would be keen to test out the bowling unit, especially before the crucial Super 4 matches begin. However, India would be without the services of Jasprit Bumrah, who has flown back home over a personal matter. But, who replaces him in the Indian team for the Nepal clash on Monday?

As captain Rohit announced India’s playing XI against Pakistan, there was no place for Mohammed Shami in the team, with Shardul Thakur being preferred as the third pacer. Whether Shami wasn’t fully fit or not, wasn’t revealed but he is expected to return to the Indian team, especially now that Bumrah isn’t available for selection.

Barring the straight swap between Bumrah and Shami, the Indian team isn’t expected to make any change. Had the Indian bowling unit managed to get some action against Pakistan, Prasidh Krishna could’ve been tried in the match against Nepal. But, with rain playing spoilsport in the last match, no other changes are expected to be made.

The top-order trio of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli failed to fire against Pakistan. It is crucial for the Indian team to get them back in form. The Nepal clash, hence, could serve as an important platform for the three right-handers to gain some form and add crucial runs to their roster before the ODI World Cup begins next month.

India’s likely playing XI against Nepal:Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj

Former Indian cricket team star Mohammed Kaif believes that pacer Mohammed Shami can cause problems for Babar Azam when India take on Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup 2023 on Saturday. In a recent interaction, Kaif explained that Shami managed the bowling well when Jasprit Bumrah was out of action due to injury and with the fast bowler enjoying a good run of form, he can prove to be a key asset for the Rohit Sharma-led side in the high-voltage match against Pakistan.

“Mohammed Shami is a fantastic bowler, his form is also very good. And even in Bumrah’s absence, he managed the bowling very well. Even his form in the IPL was great. So he has a lot of talent. In my opinion, Babar Azam is going to have a lot of difficulty,” Kaif said on Star Sports.

Three possible high-octane India versus Pakistan games for the starved fans on both sides of the border along with a final chance for five nations to put their respective houses in order before the World Cup adds context to the Asia Cup, starting in Multan on Wednesday. It is a tournament that has often struggled to find relevance in the midst of mushrooming bilateral contests over the last decade along with the waning popularity of T20 cricket but the 2023 edition, beginning on Wednesday, has occupied a large slice of the mind space of team think tanks.

It is the final stop for five of the six teams barring Nepal, to find answers for some nagging questions ahead of the global event, starting October 5.
