Domestic season opener Durand Cup football tournament will be held from July 27 to August 31 across four venues with Indian Super League, I-League and other invitational teams competing in it. The 133rd edition of the Asia’s oldest tournament will have 43 matches to be played in a round-robin league-cum-knockout format, with the opening match and the final scheduled at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata. The 24 participating teams will be divided into six groups. Eight teams — group toppers and two best second-placed sides — will qualify for the knockout stage.

Like last year, international teams are expected to participate this year too, the organisers said on Tuesday.

Continuing with its commitment to spread the tournament further into the East and North-East, two new cities — Jamshedpur and Shillong — have been added as host venues this year.

Matches will be held in Kokrajhar in Assam for the second consecutive year, besides Kolkata, which has been a host for the last five years.

Kolkata will host three groups while Kokrajhar, Shillong and Jamshedpur will host one group each.

ISL side Mohun Bagan Super Giant are the defending champions, having won the tournament for a record 17th time, the most by any team.

Super Cup champions Odisha FC revived their AFC Cup campaign with a 6-1 demolition of Maziya Sports & Recreation of Maldives at the Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday. After defeats against Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bashundhara Kings, Odisha finally got points on the board in Group D, keeping their hopes of progression to the knockout stage alive. It was a flurry of action from the opening whistle with Odisha needing only three minutes to take the lead when Lalthathanga Khawlhring scored on the half-turn, after Mourtada Fall had won a header from a corner kick.

Maziya, however, caught their hosts by surprise in the 13th minute from a corner kick of their own. Branimir Jocic met Hamza Mohamed’s delivery with a looping header that caught Odisha custodian Amrinder Singh off guard.

The parity lasted just two minutes as Odisha regained the lead with Carlos Delgado producing an incredible header to guide the ball past Hussain Shareef from an Ahmed Jahouh free-kick.

The Kalinga Warriors went on to increase their lead in the 19th minute when Delgado turned provider, setting up Fall for another header.

After a breathless end-to-end start to the game, the match endured a calmer period and it was only after half-time the intensity picked up once again.

Maziya went close to reducing the gap in the 48th minute when the dangerous Hamza created space by cutting in from the left but his goal bound shot was pushed out by Amrinder.

Instead, it was the home side who would score again 10 minutes later, with Maziya’s failure to deal with yet another corner set-piece allowing Amey Ranawade to score through a glorious long range curler into the bottom corner.

Isak Vanlalruatfela made it 5-1 in the 62nd minute, finishing from close range after Diego Mauricio had beaten the offside trap to square the ball to his teammate. Sahil Panwar scored the sixth goal in added time (90+5th) to cap the resounding win.

The two teams will meet again on November 7.

Jason Cummings struck a brace as Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Maziya Sports & Recreation Club of Maldives 2-1 to consolidate their top-spot at the top of Group D standings in the AFC Cup on Monday. The Australian A-League winners scored in the 28th and 90 2nd minutes, while the Maldives Super Cup winners pulled one back through Tomoki Wada (45th). Hugo Boumous set it up for Cummings to score the first goal that hit the woodwork before finding the back of the net. Maziya equalised just before the break when Wada’s powerful shot beat Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith before flying to the top corner. Sahal Abdul Samad crossed the ball to an onrushing Cummings who nutmegged Maziya goalkeeper to seal three points.

This was the Mariners second win from as many matches as they went three points clear of Maziya at the top of the table.

The reigning Indian Super League champions next face Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on October 24.

Two-time Inter-zonal semifinalists Mohun Bagan had blanked Super Cup champions Odisha FC 4-0 in their previous AFC Cup outing.

The All India Football Federation has urged the 10 Indian Super League franchises to release players selected for the upcoming Asian Games, keeping the “national interest in mind”. The Hangzhou-bound 22-member Indian men’s squad has six players from Bengaluru FC, three from Mumbai City FC, while FC Goa, Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Odisha FC, Kerala Blasters have two each. Punjab FC, Chennaiyin FC and Hyderabad have one each.

The Indian Super League start on on September 21, while the Asian Games begin a day after on September 23 in Hangzhou, China.

“We very much understand that this Asian Games is outside the FIFA window, and you are not obliged to release the players,” AIFF secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran wrote in a letter to the 10 ISL clubs.

“But we all have the responsibility towards the country to make India proud… As Indians we are obliged to make sacrifices for the country and, in this process, you have to take a decision by releasing the players considering the National interest in mind.” Making a special exemption, the Sports Ministry allowed both the men’s and women’s teams participation in the Asian Games, marking their return at the continental showpiece after nine years.

“We are hopeful that you will release these players in time for the full strength of team to be in Asian Games and stand with the country during the Asian Games,” Prabhakaran stated.

“We sincerely hope that you will stand with the country and make available these players which would be hailed by all the citizens of India.

“Your decision will take our beautiful game to the next level. We look forward for your cooperation and support in taking Indian football forward and your one step to release the players to be part of Asian Games will once again demonstrate our collaboration in shaping the future of football in India,” he added.

The Indian men’s team, ranked 99 in the FIFA rankings, is the second-best ranked team in Group A behind hosts China (No. 80). Myanmar (160) and Bangladesh (189) are the other two teams.

A total of 23 teams have been divided into six groups — five with four each and one (group D) with three.

Top two teams of each group and four best third-placed teams across all groups will make the pre-quarterfinals.

The Igor Stimac-coached side will begin its campaign against hosts China on September 19, followed by the matches against Bangladesh (September 21) and Myanmar (September 24).

The Indian men’s football team had won gold medals at the New Delhi 1951 and Jakarta 1962 Asian Games, while clinching a bronze at Bangkok 1970.

The 2023 Hangzhou Games will be the 16th Asian Games appearance for the Indian men’s team.

Reigning Indian Super League champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant came up with a fine performance to outplay Mumbai City FC 3-1 in the fourth quarterfinal of the Durand Cup on Sunday. For Mohun Bagan, the goal-scorers were Jason Cummings, Manvir Singh and Anwar Ali, whereas Jorge Pereyra Diaz scored the consolation goal for Mumbai. The former will be up against FC Goa in the semifinals here on Thursday. Mumbai City head coach Des Buckingham named a strong XI, with Diaz, Bipin Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte leading the attack, while Rahul Bheke, Mehtab Singh, Akash Mishra and Yoell Van Nieff were in the defence.

As for Mohun Bagan, they started with Hector Yuste, Ali and Subhasish Bose in the defence, while Ashique Kuruniyan and Manvir were the wing-backs. Armando Sadiku and Cummings led the forward line-up.

The midfield of both groups was packed with high quality, as Greg Stewart, Alberto Noguera and Apuia started for Mumbai, while Mohun Bagan brought in Anirudh Thapa, Sahal Abdul Samad and Hugo Boumous.

The quality in the midfield allowed both teams to cancel out each other’s moves initially, making it difficult to create space through the middle.

Ashique Kuruniyan created some space, but his pass to Cummings saw Lachenpa bringing the latter down, resulting in a penalty, which was swiftly converted by Cummings, as MBSG led in the ninth minute.

However, Mumbai soon took control of the game, giving their opponents some defensive trouble. In the 28th, Jorge Pereyra Diaz equalised for the Islanders, as Greg Stewart and Alberto Noguera combined well and the latter’s cross was deflected by Kaith, falling onto the Argentine’s path, who redirected the ball in with his chest.

Regardless, MCFC could not keep the deadlock intact for long enough, as Hugo Boumous’s looping cross was dazzlingly headed into the net by Manvir in the 30th minute.

As the Mariners led at half time, Vikram Partap Singh was introduced by Buckingham to bolster MCFC’s attack.

While Mumbai were now going all out with their attack, Mohun Bagan were taking most of the chances, as Anwar Ali doubled the lead in the 63rd minute. Ashique Kuruniyan displayed his skills to rush past Apuia and Bipin Singh, putting in a dangerous ball for Ali, who headed the ball into the corner of the goal by jumping high in the air.

The Islanders looked bereft of ideas, as the Mariners defended well, neutralising the former’s chances.
