South Africa edged past Pakistan by a one-wicket margin to register a thrilling win over the Babar Azam-led side on Friday. Aiden Markram hit a solid 91 but a late batting collapse from South Africa kept Pakistan alive in the game. It was left to the last pair of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi to score the final 11 runs. Shamsi survived a close leg-before appeal that went to the umpire’s call off fast bowler Haris Rauf with eight needed. The incident took place on the final ball of the 46th over.

Shamsi was hit on the front pad on the bowling of Rauf. The ground umpire gave it not out and Pakistan reviewed the decision.

Ball tracking revealed that the ball would have clipped the leg stump, which meant the wicket was on the umpire’s call. Shamsi survived as the field umpire had given him not out.

Talking about the Decision Review System (DRS) after the game, former Pakistan captain Moin Khan made serious allegations. While he blamed the umpire for it, Moin added that the clipping shown by the ball-tracker was wrong.

“It was umpire’s mistake. He (Shamsi) should have been given out. At the point of impact, the leg-stump was visible. It was clearly out, and the umpire should’ve raised his finger. It could’ve gone down for referral then. I feel the clipping was shown wrong. The full ball was hitting the leg-stump,” Moin said on A Sports.

Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq also threw light on the issue by appealing for a change in decision-making.

“Umpire’s call is a big issue that needs to be sorted out. If it shows that it’s out, and the umpire has given it not out, then it should be given out. If you have to stay with umpire’s decision, then what’s the point,” said Misbah.

Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan tore into current skipper Babar Azam following the defeat to India in their World Cup match on Saturday. India outplayed Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium to continue their winning run in the tournament. After being put into bat, Pakistan were 155/2 at one stage, but crumbled to 191 all out. Babar scored 50 (58) while Mohammad Rizwan chipped in with a 69-ball 49. While analysing the match, Moin said that Babar “looked scared” and the same reflected in the body language of other players.

“Babar’s batting in terms of intent, as captain, it was not his natural game. He took 58 balls. When he came to the crease, he was in a settled pitch and situation when the first wicket fell at 41. He should’ve maintained the flow a bit and attacked slightly. Ye to intent hota hain a pura reflect karta hai team ke andar (The intent reflects within the team). Aapka kaptaan jab dara hua nazar ayega, nahi khelega to ladke bhi phir wese hi react karte hain (If you captain is afraid to play his shots, boys will also react similarly),” Moin said on A Sports.

“They looked under pressure, and clearly, because of this, they didn’t execute proper shots. Aap pehle se dare hue honge yaar mai shots khelunga to out na ho jaun(You are afraid whether you’ll get out while playing the shots). I didn’t see intent from any batters,” he added.

Veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik also questioned the leadership of Babar, saying that he doesn’t have plan B and C against top-ranked teams.

“Babar Azam has been running the show, this is his responsibility. Sit with the players. There should be B and C plans. When you play big teams, they counterattack your plan A, and you don’t have an answer,” Malik said during the same discussion.

India’s win over Pakistan took them to the top of the World 2023 Cup standings.

The Pakistan cricket team is already in India, gearing up for the Cricket World Cup 2023. The mega event will kick off on October 5 with the final match set to be played on November 19. The Babar Azam-led side will be starting its Cricket World Cup campaign with a match against the Netherlands on October 6. Meanwhile, its much-awaited game against arch-rivals India will take place on October 14. Ahead of the crucial match against the number one ranked ODI team, Pakistan great Moin Khan has said that the players get scared while playing against India.

“I saw this 100%. The players looked scared, they were hesitant in even giving suggestions to Babar, whether it was Rizwan, Shadab or Shaheen. It was visible that the team wasn’t gelled up. There were no discussions, and even if there were suggestions those were not being followed. And even if Babar was following them, they weren’t working,” Moin told Cricket Pakistan while analysing the performance of Babar and the company at the Asia Cup 2023.

“Another thing is that against India players get scared. And those who really are scared that their suggestions won’t work… that’s fear. As a cricketer, you have to play on your potential and you should contribute 100%. It’s okay if your suggestions go wrong, it happens. But your body language shows whether you want to win, and that wasn’t visible. And I’m pretty sure there were some issues in the dressing room. And I know, in a professional environment, there are differences but you have to end them to perform better. You have to move on,” Moin added.

Kane Williamson showed his class in his first competitive outing in six months while Rachin Ravindra sizzled at the top of the order as New Zealand gunned down a 346-run target in their opening World Cup warm-up game against Pakistan in Hyderabad on Friday.

Barring the openers, Pakistan batters including Mohammad Rizwan (103 retired hurt off 91), Babar Azam (80 off 84), and Saud Shaukeel (75 off 53) had a good hit in the middle, helping their team post a daunting 345 for five in 50 overs.

Pakistan will take on Australia on October 3 in their second and final warm-up game.
