It is back to business for Rohit Sharma’s side following its much-deserved month-long break, as the team began its preparations in right earnest under new coach Gautam Gambhir here on Friday, for the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh. With the first Test against Bangladesh scheduled here from September 19, the entire squad, including Rohit and batting stalwart Virat Kohli, assembled at the MA Chidambaram Stadium with new bowling coach, South African great Morne Morkel, and batting coach Vikram Rathour also in attendance.

BCCI posted images of the first day of practice and wrote, “The countdown starts as Team India begin their preps for an exciting home season.” The images showed the entire squad listening attentively to Gambhir, his support staff and skipper Rohit.

Earlier, India skipper Rohit arrived in Chennai on Thursday, while Virat flew in directly from London for the opening Test.

Wearing a yellow jersey, Rohit was seen emerging from the airport escorted by security personnel, in a PTI Video on Thursday night, while Kohli came from London in an early-morning flight.

The likes of India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had earlier reached the city on Thursday.

The players are returning to the field after a much-needed break of more than a month and would look to put behind the disappointment of losing the ODI series against Sri Lanka in August and get back to winning ways quickly under Gambhir.

This will be India’s first Test under Gambhir and his new support staff, and it would be interesting to see how Rohit’s side approaches the game against a Bangladesh side, which is riding a wave following their 2-0 Test series win over Pakistan.

Vital World Test Championship (WTC) points are at stake in the two-match series as India get ready for a a gruelling 10-match Test season, which also includes a three-Test series at home against New Zealand and the five-match Border-Gavaskar series later this year in Australia.

India are currently heading the table with 68.52 percentage points, while Australia are a close second with 62.50 percentage points.

Bangladesh have jumped to fourth spot with 45.83 percentage points following their 10-wicket win against Pakistan in the opening Test and their amazing fight-back in the second Test where wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das scored a century to singlehandedly guide the side to a series triumph.

The second Test of the India-Bangladesh series will be played in Kanpur from September 27.

Former South Africa pace great Morne Morkel has been roped in as the Indian cricket team’s new bowling coach, BCCI secretary Jay Shah told PTI on Wednesday, completing the appointment of new head coach Gautam Gambhir‘s preferred support staff. It is understood that the 39-year-old, who replaces Paras Mhambrey, will take over as the bowling coach from the Bangladesh series that starts with the opening Test in Chennai from September 19. He has been appointed till the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

“Yes, Morne Morkel has been appointed bowling coach of the senior India men’s team,” Shah told PTI.

The other members of Gambhir’s support staff are assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, and fielding coach Ryan Ten Doeschate.

Morkel was also Gambhir’s preferred choice, having worked with him at Lucknow Super Giants during the Indian’s two IPL seasons as mentor of the franchise.

Morkel has played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is for South Africa with a total of 544 international wickets.

He will be reporting in Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy at the start of next month and is expected to watch the Duleep Trophy games. Once there, he will also touch base with VVS Laxman and head of bowling in NCA, Troy Cooley.

According to sources, Morkel was directly appointed on Gambhir’s recommendation ahead of other options like Lakshmipathy Balaji and R Vinay Kumar.

“The Cricket Advisory Committee’s (CAC) mandate was to interview the candidates for the head coach. When it came to choice of support staff, it was imperative that Gambhir’s choice prevailed. He has worked with Morne and thinks of him highly as a bowling coach,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“Also with the big series against Australia coming up Down Under from last week of November, there isn’t a better choice than the South African, who has himself enjoyed fair bit of success over there. Also there will be the five-Test tour of England next year with a potential sixth match if India reach WTC final.” It is understood that Balaji and Vinay’s names weren’t considered once it was clear that Morkel would carry forward the good work done by Mhambrey.

One half of the famous fast bowling duo that featured Dale Steyn, Morkel is a cricketing heavyweight and has also played quite a lot in India to have a fair idea about the conditions.

Also, his stint in the IPL has allowed him to have a ringside view of India’s next crop of fast bowlers including the most exciting of them all — Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan and Yash Thakur to name a few.

A lot of observers believe that Morkel worked quite a lot with Mayank during the past two seasons of IPL even though he remained injured for the better part.

Morkel’s biggest challenge will be to handle the transition phase as Mohammed Shami enters the business end of his illustrious career and Jasprit Bumrah needs more potent support apart from Mohammed Siraj, especially in red-ball cricket.

Morkel had last year worked with the Pakistan team till the end of the ODI World Cup and quit before his contract expired.

India have never had any spin bowling coach as such although former director Ravi Shastri was a distinguished left-arm spinner in his playing days. Sairaj Bahutule, who is a part of Laxman’s team at the NCA, has travelled on and off with the senior team.

Morne Morkel, former South Africa speedster, has been appointed as India’s men’s cricket team’s bowling coach. Morkel’s appointment completes trio suggested by the new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, confirmed that Morkel will join for the two-Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19. The Hindu understands that Morkel will arrive in India in time ahead of the weeklong preparatory camp in Chennai, likely to begin from September 10.

Morkel, after having been Gambhir’s teammate at the Indian Premier League franchisee Kolkata Knight Riders, was roped in as the bowling coach by Lucknow Super Giants during Gambhir’s stint as the mentor.

Besides his experience as bowling coach in franchise cricket across the globe, Morkel also worked as the bowling coach of Pakistan men’s team during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

Ahead of his appointment last month as the head coach, Gambhir had stressed on roping in Morkel along with Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate. While the other two joined as assistant coaches for the limited overs tour to Sri Lanka, Morkel’s appointment was delayed since he wasn’t available to join at such a short notice.

Besides, the BCCI hierarchy is understood to be averse to having too many overseas faces in the team’s support staff. Morkel’s appointment thus completes Gambhir’s wishlist. It will be interesting to see how he shapes the pace battery for the big five-match Test series in Australia later this year.

Morne Morkel appointed Indian cricket team’s bowling coach: BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirms to news agency PTI. Former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel was earlier the bowling coach of the Pakistan cricket team during 2023 ODI World Cup in India. He has been associated with IPL teams – Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Daredevils. “Yes, Morne Morkel has been appointed bowling coach of the senior India men’s team,” Shah told PTI.

India’s first Test match against Bangladesh on September 19 is going to be Morkel’s first assignment with the Indian team.

The 39-year-old Morkel was new chief coach Gautam Gambhir’s primary choice, having worked with him at Lucknow Super Giants. The 39 year-old has played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is for South Africa with a total of 544 international wickets.

Gambhir and Morkel shared a good working relationship during their time at the LSG as coaches. After Gambhir left KKR, Morkel stayed on with LSG as bowling coach. Gambhir  Earlier in 2014 mega-auction, Gambhir, then KKR captain, had insisted on getting the services of Morkel as a player. Gambhir had also said before that Morkel was the bowler he feared the most.

Meanwhile, former India pacer Joginder Sharma feels Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as head coach of the team might not be a long one, mainly because of his outspoken nature. Gambhir took over as head coach of the Indian team after Rahul Dravid tenure came to an end after the T20 World Cup in June. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 in Gambhir’s debut T20I series as head coach.

While Gambhir has been all smiles in the early days of tenure, Joginder, a T20 World Cup-winner with him in 2007, feels that the former India opener won’t be able stay as head coach for a long time.

“Gautam Gambhir team ko sambhalne waala hai lekin par mera ye manna hai ki Gautam Gambhir jyada lambe samay tak tik nahi payega (Gautam Gambhir is the one to manage the team, but I believe that Gautam Gambhir will not be able to stay for a long time),” Joginder said on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast.

New India head coach Gautam Gambhir has firmly denied reports and rumours that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rejected his requests for coaching staff personnel. Instead, Gambhir expressed that his requests to the BCCI were largely accepted. Gambhir also announced the names of two people who are set to join his support staff – Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate. Gambhir’s first series as India head coach begins on Saturday, July 27, as India tours Sri Lanka for 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs.

Appearing at a press conference for the first time since being appointed as Team India head coach, Gambhir refuted claims that the BCCI had not agreed to his requests.

“Really happy with the BCCI. They have agreed to most of the things I’ve asked for. I was surprised to read all those news (about BCCI rejecting his demands),” said Gambhir in the press-conference.

“The crux of the support staff will remain the same,” he confirmed. Gambhir stated that T Dilip, the fielding coach during Rahul Dravid‘s tenure, will continue in his role.

“Abhishek Nayar as assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coach,” confirmed Gambhir. “I feel there could be assistant coaches working and focusing on all three departments rather than one specific department. That’s the reason we now have two assistant coaches. That’s the way we will go forward as well,” added Gambhir.

Nayar and ten Doeschate are two men Gambhir worked in close quarters with during IPL 2024, as Kolkata Knight Riders won a third IPL title. Nayar was the assistant coach of KKR, while ten Doeschate was their fielding coach.

Gambhir confirmed that Nayar, T Dilip and former India leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule are travelling with the India squad to Sri Lanka, while ten Doeschate will join the team directly in Colombo.

Gambhir stated that the entire support staff will be finalised after the Sri Lanka tour.

“We still have one month after the Sri Lanka tour, and we can finalise after the tour. Importantly, I’ve worked with Ryan and Abhishek closely during the IPL. I enjoyed working with them, they are thorough professionals, and there can’t be a bigger and better opportunity now,” said Gambhir.

South African pacer Morne Morkel has been reported to be requested by Gambhir to also join the coaching staff.

Former South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel is likely to become the next bowling coach of the Indian cricket team, according to a News18 report. The report claimed that discussions are currently underway between the fast bowler and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after his name was recommended by new head coach Gautam Gambhir. Morkel played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and he was part of the 2014 side that won the title under Gambhir’s captaincy. “The formalities haven’t been completed yet but they will hopefully be done soon and Morne Morkel is likely to come on board after the Sri Lanka series,” says a source tracking developments.

However, Cricbuzz reported that Morkel will not travel to Sri Lanka for the upcoming T20I and ODI series with former India spinner Sairaj Bahutule serving as the interim bowling coach.

Bahutule has played two Tests and eight ODIs between 1997-2003.

Earlier, names like Vinay Kumar, Lakshmipathy Balaji and Zaheer Khan were doing the rounds for the role but in the past few days, Morkel has emerged as a strong contender for the role.

Gambhir and Morkel have also worked together as part of the Lucknow Super Giants coaching staff as the former India star was the mentor and Morkel served as the bowling coach. Morkel also has some international coaching experience as he was the bowling coach of the Pakistan cricket team.

In Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as new India head coach through the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate are set to link up with him, while T Dilip will continue to be the fielding coach in the side.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, Nayar, who played three ODIs for India, and Ten Doeschate have been appointed as assistant coaches in the Indian team. The duo were with Gambhir, then serving a mentorship role, in the Kolkata Knight Riders coaching staff when the side won IPL 2024.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are all set to appoint Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate as assistant coaches of the Indian cricket team, according to a report by Cricbuzz. While no official statement has been issued by the team management, the report claims that both Nayar and Ten Doeschate will join new head coach Gautam Gambhir for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka. Nayar was the assistant coach for Kolkata Knight Riders while the former Dutch international also served as KKR’s fielding coach when Gambhir served as mentor. T Dilip, who served as fielding coach under Rahul Dravid, is reportedly going to be retained in the new support staff as well.

However, questions still remain over the appointment of the bowling coach but former South Africa cricket team fast bowler Morne Morkel is being considered a strong candidate for the position.

Morkel has also worked with Gambhir as part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team. Morkel played for the franchise between 2014 and 2016 under Gambhir’s captaincy and even won the title in 2014.

The report stated that Dilip and Nayar will travel with the team to Sri Lanka but it remains unclear when Ten Doeschate will join the side. He is currently working as part of the coaching staff for the LA Knight Riders in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC). The Board is currently in conversation with Morkel about the bowling coach job but nothing concrete has come out of the discussions yet.

After appointing Gautam Gambhir as head coach of the Indian team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now lining up its option to decide the remaining support staff. Over the past few days, several names have been linked to the bowling coach position, including Zaheer Khan, Lakshmipathy Balaji and R Vinay Kumar. While a final decision has yet to be made, Cricbuzz has now reported that Gambhir has asked the BCCI to also consider former South Africa Morne Morkel for the job.

The report also claimed that BCCI has already held talks with Morkel, who played who played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for the Proteas. Morkel was Pakistan’s bowling coach during the ODI World Cup last year in India, but resigned from his post before his contract expired.

Both Gambhir and Morkel were part of Andy Flower‘s support staff at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two seasons. While Gambhir left LSG to join KKR as mentor, Morkel decided to stay at LSG under new head coach Justin Langer.

Gambhir was the captain of KKR when Morkel joined the franchise in 2014. The former India opener has always been a big fan of Morkel, who he often described as the “fiercest bowler he had ever faced”.

“While a final decision has yet to be made, it appears that the BCCI may reach a conclusion soon. One of the considerations is Morkel’s young family and the extensive travel required for the India job. He lives in the plush Seaforth suburb in northern Sydney with his wife Roz Kelly, a sports presenter on Channel 9. The couple have two children,” the report stated.

If BCCI and Morkel manage to find an agreement, the former South African pacer will replace Paras Mhambrey, who was part of Rahul Dravid‘s support staff for the past three years.

If the reports are to be believed, Morkel could join former KKR teammate Ryan ten Doeschate and Nayar in Gambhir’s support staff.

The BCCI is keen on retaining fielding T Dilip from the outgoing Dravid regime.

At the moment, Pakistan’s World Cup campaign is stuck against a huge boulder primarily because of their bowlers’ inability to fire as a unit, the latest setback being a 62-run defeat against Australia in Bengaluru. It was their second successive defeat in the tournament after a seven-wicket battering by India. Shaheen Shah Afridi looked to have regained his touch with a five-wicket haul, but Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali were taken apart by David Warner and Mitchell Marsh. Alarmingly, the Pakistan bowlers did not look to have a Plan B when riding on a rough sea, and their bowling coach Morne Morkel admitted to his side not building a bowling partnership.

“The last couple of games, that is one of our talking points, to string partnerships together. I think in India that is the key, create pressure from both ends, keep the stumps in play, and at the moment, we’re not doing that.

“We are not consistent with the ball. If you are going to lift that trophy on the 19th then we need to create consistency from both the ends,” said Morkel after the match.

The former South African pacer said the team missed the presence of injured pacer Naseem Shah and his new ball alliance with Afridi in this tournament.

“Naseem is a quality bowler if you look at his stats, the consistency he gave us with the new ball upfront was amazing. The partnership he formed with Shaheen was… this we always talked about bowling partnerships. Naseem is a big loss,” he said.

However, Morkel said Rauf and Ali were trying to learn and adjust to the demands of bowling in powerplays in ODIs, a role the pacers are not accustomed to.

“It’s slightly new role for Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf bowling with the new ball in powerplays. These guys used to bowl sort of outside the powerplay. But I think, with the opportunity we’ve given them they are standing up to the occasion.

“It is quite tough with a new ball in India. The margins are small. So, they are learning and trying their heart out,” he said.

Morkel said the way forward for Rauf in ODIs was to increase his situational awareness and adding new tricks to his repertoire.

“He is still one of the go-to guys, one of the X-factors. He can look at gaming awareness and may be mixing your pace a little bit more. But he’s a guy who always gives 100%. I can’t fault him for anything,” he added.

However, Morkel saw one bright omen in the re-emergence of left-arm pacer Afridi during the match against the Aussies.

“We had honest conversations. We sort of unpacked the opening spells of the World Cup so far, and looked at areas where we can look to attack and be smart. Perhaps, he was trying too hard. Tonight, he ran in and hit those hard lines, changed his game strategy and mixed his pace up.

“He put up a performance like that on a tough bowling day against a team that is very aggressive, and it is a pleasing thing for me,” said Morkel.

Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel feels that Pakistan spinners will make a comeback against Sri Lanka after a disappointing overall display in the Asia Cup. Pakistan are up against the reigning Asia Cup champions who are still well-placed to defend their title if they can return to winning ways. By virtue of a superior net run rate to Pakistan, Sri Lanka are well placed to reach this year’s final and can earn a place in the decider by not tasting defeat in their final Super Four match against Babar Azam’s side on Thursday.

A win will have them qualify with ease, while a tie or no result will also see them progress as there is no reserve day scheduled for the final two Super Four matches.

Sri Lanka’s match against India was a reflection of how well the pitch will work in favour of the spinners. Pakistan’s pacers have dominated the entire Asia Cup but Morkel feels that Pakistan’s spinners are up for the task that lies ahead.

“The conditions are spin-friendly and I think our spinners are working really hard at the moment. They will be the first to put up their hands when it is needed. They are all match-winners and experienced players. They know how to make comebacks,” Morkel said in the pre-match conference.

He also reflected on the absence of their star pace bowler Naseem Shah in a must-win clash against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, but feels it is an opportunity for the replacing players to step up and show character.

Earlier in the day, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ruled out Naseem from the entire Asia Cup due to a shoulder injury that he sustained on the reserve day of their clash against India. Young right-arm fast Zaman Khan has stepped up to fill his shoes.

“Obviously, it is a big blow (absence of Naseem). It is unfortunate that he picked some little niggles. But what a fantastic opportunity for the guys you know coming in. After going down against India, it’s a must-win game for us tomorrow. I’m quite excited to see new guys stepping in and showing some character,” Morkel said.

The former South African pacer went on to talk about how important it is for bowlers to reflect on their performance after and the way this defeat will prepare them for the World Cup.

“After the India match, we were bitterly disappointed. For me, it is very important for the bowlers to do a bit of self-reflection, ask yourself the hard questions where did you go wrong? Yes, credit must also go to the Indian batters. They put us under pressure early. Those are fantastic lessons for us before the World Cup. We are gonna grow from this and come back stronger,” Morkel signed off saying.
