Mihir Shah is the main accused in the Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case

Mumbai:

The 23-year-old accused in the Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case was made to sit face-to-face with his driver as the police interrogated both men today. Mihir Shah, who drove the BMW that hit a two-wheeler and killed a woman, had changed seats with his driver following the accident.

The police also recreated the sequence of events at the accident site today.

Mr Shah and his driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, claimed they did not know the woman was stuck under the car as they drove away after hitting the two wheeler.

Police sources said the two men “admitted to their mistake”, and Mr Shah told them he “regretted his actions”.

Kaveri Nakva and her husband Pradik Nakva were on a two-wheeler when the BMW driven by Mr Shah, the son of sacked Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, rammed the scooter and sped away.

Mr Shah was returning from a pub when the BMW that he drove hit the couple’s two-wheeler. He also faces allegations made by the pub management that he gave them a fake identity card that showed him as 27 years old, while he is 23, per official records. The minimum drinking age is 25.

The police have said many CCTV footage have captured the speeding BMW dragging the woman stuck on the bonnet. Mr Shah stopped the car after dragging Ms Nakva for 1.5 km, and then exchanged seats with his driver.

He removed the woman’s body from underneath the engine bay and the bumper, and left the body on the road. His driver then reversed the BMW and ran over the woman’s body before the car disappeared from CCTV view.

Police sources said they suspect Mr Shah was aware that the woman was stuck under the car, but he drove on and did not stop, despite some motorists frantically signalling and shouting at him to stop.

Mr Shah was arrested in Thane district yesterday, after he evaded the police for two days.

24-year-old Mihir Shah is the son of a Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena leader.

A speeding BMW, allegedly driven by a Shiv Sena leader’s son, hit a two-wheeler in Mumbai’s Worli on Sunday killing a 45-year-old woman and injuring her husband. Fish sellers Kaveri and Pradip Nakhva were returning after buying fish from Sassoon Dock when their scooter was hit from behind by the car.

The couple were flung in the air and landed on the car’s bonnet. While Pradeep managed to jump off it, Kaveri was dragged for 100 metres. She died on the way to the hospital.

The suspect, 24-year-old Mihir Shah, who was driving the car while drunk has been on the run, police said.

Who is Mihir Shah?

Mihir Shah is the son of Rajesh Shah, a leader of the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. The politician.

Mihir studied till Class 10 and did not pursue any further education. He joined his father’s construction business based in Maharashtra.

The night before the accident, Mihir was out till late at night drinking in Juhu. In a drunk state, he asked his driver Rajendra Singh Bijawat to take him on a long drive.

After driving from Juhu to Worli, he told the driver he would take the wheel and drive the rest of the way. The accident happened soon after at 5.30 am.

After the crash, the accused allegedly tried to scratch off a Shiv Sena sticker on the car and removed its number plate to avoid the car being linked to his father.

He then left the car in Bandra Kalanagar and fled the scene.

He allegedly called his father to inform him about the crash and then switched off his phone. The police suspect that his girlfriend may have helped in hiding him after the accident.

Kaveri Nakva and Pradeep Nakva were on the scooter the BMW crashed into

Mumbai:

It was just another Sunday morning for Kaveri Nakhava and her husband Pradeep Nakhava. The couple, who lived in Worli’s Koliwada and sold fish for a living, set out on their scooter and reached Sassoon Dock to buy fish they could sell later. They were on their back when a speeding BMW crashed into the two-wheeler, throwing Pradik and Kaveri into the air. Pradeep fell on the ground, but Kaveri was dragged by the car. She was rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.

Police say Mihir Shah, the 24-year-son of Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, was at the wheel. They also suspect that the accused was drunk, but his blood test report is awaited.

Rajesh Shah, the deputy leader of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and his driver, Rajendra Singh Bijawat, have been taken in police custody and are being question. Mihir Shah is on the run and four police teams are looking for him.

Pradeep, who has suffered minor injuries, has been at the police station since the morning. He broke down while speaking to the media. “The accident happened at 5.30 am, the car came from behind and rammed into the scooter. I fell on the left side, but my wife was dragged through the road,” he said. “I have two children, what will I do? These are big people, nobody will do anything, we will suffer.”

Police have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving and destruction of evidence, among others. Provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act have also been invoked.

The vehicle, police say, is registered in Mihir Shah’s name. At the time of the accident, Mihir Shah and their driver were in the car. According to police sources, Mihir Shah drank at a bar in Juhu last night. On his way home, he asked the driver to take him a long drive. The car came to Worli and then Mihir insisted that he would drive. Soon after he took the wheel, the speeding BMW hit the scooter on which the couple were returning home.

Maharashtra Chief Minister and Sena Leader Eknath Shinde has termed the incident “unfortunate” and assured action. “Law will take its own course, everyone is equal before law. I have spoken to the police and strict action will be taken,” he said.

The incident has brought back grim memories of the Pune hit-and-run horror in which two 24-year-old engineers lost their lives. The minor accused in the Pune crash was speeding a Porsche car after a round of drinking. The teen’s father, a prominent realtor, his mother and his grandfather were arrested in the aftermath of the accident for allegedly attempting to destroy evidence.
