Team India captain Rohit Sharma received a special welcome from his childhood friends and family memebers, as he returned to his home on Thursday following India’s T20 World Cup success. Rohit safely guided India to their second T20 World Cup title last week, with the team beating South Africa in the final in Barbados. The Indian team received a raucous reception upon its arrival in Mumbai, with fans gathered in number to see the team’s open bus victory parade. The BCCI had also organised a special felicitation ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium, where the board distributed prize money of Rs 125 crore to the team.

Late on Thursday, the players and the support staff members left for their respective homes after celebrating the victory with the fans.

India captain Rohit also reached his home on Thursday, unaware of the surprise his friends and family members had planned for him.

India batter Tilak Varma was also present at the scene as he and Rohit’s friends gave a salute to the Indian captain.

In a viral video, they also mobbed Rohit, before hugging him and lifting the star batter on their shoulders.

Rohit recently recalled being a part of 2007 T20 World Cup win parade in Mumbai, when he was an up-and-coming star in international cricket at the age of 20. He expressed happiness at how much the win means to people in India and he could achieve it for them along with his boys.

“2007 was a different feeling. We started off in the afternoon and this is in the evening. I cannot forget 2007, as it was my first World Cup. This is a little more special because I was leading the team. So it is a very proud moment for me. This is going to be mad. You can make out the excitement and it shows how much it means not just to us but also to the entire nation. It means a lot. So I am very happy that we could achieve something like this for them as well,” said Rohit

For the unversed, Rohit announced his T20I retirement hours after India’s win in the final.

Having crashed out of the IPL 2024 playoffs race, five-time champions Mumbai Indians are playing for pride as they take on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. MI’s season has been overshadowed by the controversial decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as the captain of the franchise. Rohit, who led MI to five IPL titles during his tenure, was removed as captain by the franchise after Hardik rejoined the side from Gujarat Titans (GT). However, the decision to remove Rohit sparked a huge uproar among the cricketing fraternity.

Despite all of this, Rohit continues to give everything on and off the field. From helping Hardik in captaincy to grooming the young players, Rohit has managed to keep the dressing room together.

Most importantly, Rohit’s camaraderie with the youngsters makes him stand out amongst his peers. In one such light hearted, Rohit was seen roasting MI and India youngster Tilak Varma.

In a video uploaded by MI, Rohit poked fun at Tilak, who was wearing sliders on the eve of the match against KKR at Eden Gardens. During the Test series against England earlier this year, Rohit had caught the attention of the fans on social media with his “Garden me ghumega” one-liner.

Rohit recreated the same moment with Tilak, who came up with a hilarious response to catch the MI icon off guard.

“Aye hero, kya kar raha hai bhai? Chappal mein ghum raha hai, garden me aaya hai kya? (Aye hero, what are you doing? Wearing sliders, are you wandering in a garden?),” Rohit said in a video uploaded by MI.

“Hai na bhaiya, Eden Gardens (Yes, it’s Eden Gardens!),” Tilak responded.

Meanwhile, Rohit will lead India at the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, his recent form remains a concern.

The Indian cricket team on Thursday sweated it out in nets ahead of its first ODI of three-match series against Australia. India will take on Australia in the first ODI at Mohali on Friday. The three-match series against Australia will be India’s final assignment before the ICC Cricket World Cup at home from October 5 onwards.  Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul, India’s skipper for the first two ODIs, and Suryakumar Yadav were seen practicing in the nets. This series will be crucial for Ruturaj and Tilak as it will give them some game time ahead of the start of their Asian Games men’s cricket campaign from October 3 onwards. KL, who made a triumphant return in India’s Asia Cup winning campaign recently, will also be aiming to unleash “KL 2.0”, as he has been described by fans for looking more confident and aggressive while batting, on Aussies.

Suryakumar Yadav’s future as an ODI player could also be dependent on this series, as after a disappointing run of performances in the 50-over format has seen many fans call for his axing from the squad. Scoring 537 in 27 ODIs at an average of around 24 with just two fifties, time is ticking for this batter, who has on the other hand has experienced one of the greatest peaks of form ever in T20Is.

1,841 runs in 53 T20I matches at an average of over 46, a strike rate of above 172 and three centuries, and 15 fifties sit in contrast with his ODI stats. This has left many wondering why he has not cracked the ODI code till yet. On the other hand, many players, fans and even team management continue to back him, hoping that this ferocious ball-striker will find his feet in ODIs and replicate his otherworldly T20I performances.

Ahead of the match, head coach Rahul Dravid said about Surya, “We have picked our team for the World Cup and Surya is in it.”

“We made that decision to do that and we completely back him. We back him because he’s got a certain quality and an ability that we have seen. Yes, I know we have seen it at the moment only in T20 cricket, but we know the kind of impact a player like him can make batting at six.”

“He can change the course of a game, so we have completely backed him.  We have been pretty clear about that.  There’s been total clarity on the fact that we are completely behind him.”

“We know that hopefully, he will be able to turn it around in these three games. Again, he is someone who will get these three games, and at least the first couple certainly, to be able to again develop and keep growing on his journey as a one-day cricketer,” Dravid concluded.

Shreyas Iyer’s back injury isn’t apparently very serious but concerns remain about his availability for India’s final Super 4 game against Bangladesh on Friday as the national selection committee is set to name the squad for the three-match series against Australia sometime during the week. Iyer, who has come back after a long lay-off and a back surgery to cure his stress fracture, played against Pakistan and Nepal in the group league stage before pulling out of the match against the arch-rivals at the eleventh hour, complaining back spasms. A clearer picture will emerge on Thursday during the optional training ahead of the Bangladesh game.

Those in the know of the things said that there seems to be “some amount of stiffness”, which will definitely impact his movements during fielding but they are hopeful that it won’t turn out to be very serious.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is expected to name the squad for the Australia series sometime during the ongoing week. It could be on the day of the Bangladesh game or prior to the Asia Cup final on Sunday.

While the preliminary World Cup squad has been named, the Indian team management will be worried about Iyer’s fitness and if he misses the Australia series, he would be really short of match practice with only two warm-up games left before the first match against Australia in Chennai on October 8.

KL Rahul has put an end to all fitness worries with his 100 and 39 in the two Super 4 games and even though he still looked a tad rusty initially while keeping to Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, he did regain a lot of confidence after gathering a few.

Ishan Kishan is now a designated outfielder and it is there to be seen whether Iyer, if fit, replaces Kishan in the final Super 4 game against Bangladesh.

Kishan, despite a great run in recent ODIs, did seem to struggle on slow tracks but to be fair to him, none of the batters save skipper Rohit Sharma and to some extent Rahul, looked comfortable against left-arm spin of Dunith Wellalage.

Travelling reserve Sanju Samson has returned home and Tilak Verma is supposed to join the Asian Games camp after the end of this tournament.

Possibly Tilak being a left-hander could pip a more experienced Sanju in worst possible case where he is unable to recover in time. However with two weeks (September 27) left to announce final squad, every stakeholder in Indian cricket will keep its fingers crossed.

Former Indian cricket team opener Aakash Chopra praised the Cricket World Cup 2023 squad but suggested two possible changes. In the latest video on his YouTube channel, Chopra analysed the 15-member squad and said that he would have picked veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal over Axar Patel and young batter Tilak Varma over Suryakumar Yadav. India went with three left-arm spinners – Axar, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav – but Chopra believes that Chahal would have been a solid option. Tilak was part of the Asia Cup 2023 squad but missed out on selection for the World Cup.

“The squad is good, but, I feel, there’s a lack of an extra wrist-spin option and perhaps an off-spin option. If I was given this squad, I would have picked Chahal over Axar Patel and possibly Tilak Varma over Suryakumar Yadav. But can criticize till 24 hours. After that it is our team, and we will back it.”

The Indian cricket team currently has only two left-handed batters in Ravindra Jadeja and Ishan Kishan in the middle order. Chopra believes that Tilak should have been selected in order to provide India with a more balanced batting attack and the youngster would have also provided an off-spin option.

“Only two of Ishan, Shreyas, and KL Rahul can play. So one of them as well as Surya have to sit out anyway. But I feel what if someday you’re up against an opponent having 3-4 left-handers in their line-up. You would have then loved to have an off-spin option which Tilak could have provided,” he explained.

India will play their opening match of Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia on October 8.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup 2023. The Board made a bold call in giving wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul the nod despite the fact that he didn’t feature in the first two matches of Asia Cup 2023 due to injury. Tilak Varma, who was selected in India’s 17-member team for the Asia Cup, didn’t find a place in the 15-man World Cup squad while Sanju Samson was left out too. Prasidh Krishna, who made his return to the ODI side after a long injury layoff, wasn’t picked by the selectors either but ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah was roped in.

There were no surprises in the team selection after chief selector Ajit Agarkar had suggested that the World Cup squad will be picked from the 18-member Asia Cup squad (including the reserve Samson).

“We have picked best possible combination. We have depth in batting, we have spin and other bowling options. Hardik Pandya is a complete package, his form will be crucial for us at World Cup” Rohit Sharma said.

With Rahul now declared fully fit, he was picked for the World Cup squad. The wicket-keeper batter is also expected to fly to Sri Lanka and remain available for selection for India’s Asia Cup Super 4 matches.

Former Indian cricket team opener Wasim Jaffer had a surprising addition as he picked the squad for ICC World Cup 2023. Jaffer took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to reveal his picks for India’s World Cup squad and in a surprising move, he decided to not include Suryakumar Yadav. Instead, youngster Tilak Varma found a spot following a brilliant show in West Indies. He also went with Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul as the wicket-keeping options while Sanju Samson did not find a place in the squad.

Instead of going for Sanju Samson or Suryakumar Yadav, Jaffer stuck with KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer who recently returned from their respective injuries.

Surprisingly, Tilak Varma who is yet to make his ODI debut has also found his place in the squad ahead of Surya and Samson.

Ishan Kishan who performed exceptionally against Pakistan in India’s Asia Cup campaign opener with his knock of 82 has retained his place.

While, in the bowling department, Jaffer stuck with Kuldeep Yadav, leaving out Yuzvendra Chahal from the mix.

The World Cup commences on Thursday, October 5 when 2019 finalists England and New Zealand clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with the event culminating in the final at the same venue on Sunday, November 19.

The enthralling clash between India and Pakistan which was originally slated to take place in Ahmedabad on Sunday, October 15, but this clash has been moved a day earlier and will now be held at the same venue on Saturday, October 14.

Former Indian cricket team opener Gautam Gambhir named his picks for the ICC World Cup 2023 squad and it came with a couple of surprise choices. Both Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur did not find any place in his squad and instead, Gambhir picked all-rounder Washington Sundar and also pacer Prasidh Krishna as the fourth fast bowling option. In the batting department, he went with Suryakumar Yadav with KL Rahul as the second wicket-keeping option behind Ishan Kishan who will be the top pick for the position.

During an interaction on Star Sports, Gambhir picked Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul as specialist batting options. Ishan Kishan was the wicket-keeping option with Sanju Samson missing the cut. Even Tilak Varma did not find any place in his squad.

With KL Rahul in the side, India have the chance of playing an extra batter if the situation demands.

When it  comes to all-rounders, Gambhir opted for Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya and Washington Sundar. Kuldeep Yadav was the third spin bowling option in the squad.

The fast bowling department had the three usual choices – Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. However, the surprising selection was that of Prasidh Krishna who was out with injury and made his comeback against Ireland. Shardul Thakur did not find any place in the team.

India take on Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup 2023 on September 2 and head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed on Tuesday that KL Rahul will miss the first two games of the competition due to injury. Rahul was widely being considered as one of the major contenders for the No. 4 slot and his absence can result in some major changes in the batting order. Former Indian cricket team opener Aakash Chopra took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to discuss the various options that the team management can opt for against Pakistan including a couple of drastic decisions.

“KLR unavailable for the first two games. Opens up a host of discussion points…does Ishan open? If yes, where will Shubman bat? Or Rohit-Gill-Ishan bat 1-2-3 and then Kohli bats at 4? Or Rohit-Gill open…Kohli at 3 and Ishan at 5? Or Gill gets benched and Tilak/SKY bat at 5?,” Chopra posted.

With Rahul out of contention, Ishan Kishan is expected to play as the wicket-keeper and that complicates matters for the team management.

The youngster had a good outing as opener against West Indies and if he is selected as Rohit Sharma‘s partner at the top of the innings, that will mean Shubman Gill potentially missing out or playing the No. 3 role. Kohli can play at No. 4 with No. 5 being a toss-up between Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.

However, it is more likely that Kishan will play at No. 5 with Rohit and Gill opening the innings and Kohli keeping his No. 3 position. The No. 4 position can also go to the returning Shreyas Iyer.
