Lavrov said the US is starting to lose its sense of mutual restraint with Russia, calling it “dangerous”.

Moscow:

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned the US not to cross Russia’s “red lines” on the Ukraine conflict, asserting that Washington is starting to lose its sense of mutual restraint with Moscow, state-owned TASS news agency reported.

In an interview on Wednesday, Lavrov said that Americans have “crossed their own red lines” on the supply of arms to Ukraine, the Russian news agency reported.

“They (the US) should understand that our red lines are nothing to fool with. And they know very well where they are,” the report quoted him as saying.

Lavrov said the US is starting to lose its sense of mutual restraint with Russia, calling it “dangerous”.

“(US National Security Council spokesman John) Kirby said that the issue of stepping up support for Ukraine should be approached carefully so as not to provoke World War III because it will be sad to see Europe gone,” he said, adding that the US has a “deep-seated conviction that they are untouchable”.

Lavrov said he hoped Washington would realise the potential consequences of supplying Ukraine with weapons.

“I am convinced that there are reasonable people with significant influence left there. And I hope that the interests of the US will be taken into account,” he said.

Meanwhile, at a press conference on Wednesday, Kirby said the US welcomes any nation that is willing to try to help end the conflict in Ukraine.

“Any nation that is willing to try to help end this war and do so in keeping with President Zelenskyy’s prerogatives, the Ukrainian people’s prerogatives, his plan for a just peace, we would certainly welcome a role like that,” he said.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin named India among the three countries he is constantly in touch with over the Ukraine conflict, asserting that they are sincerely making efforts to resolve it.

“We respect our friends and partners, who, I believe, sincerely seek to resolve all issues surrounding this conflict, primarily China, Brazil and India. I constantly keep in touch with our colleagues on this issue,” Putin was quoted as saying in a separate report by TASS.

Putin’s remarks came within two weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Ukraine, where he held talks with President Zelenskyy.

On August 23, Modi visited Ukraine, where he conveyed to President Zelenskyy that Ukraine and Russia should sit together without wasting time to end the ongoing war and that India was ready to play an “active role” to restore peace in the region.

This is the fourth out of the 28 steel bridges, completed for the Bullet Train corridor.

New Delhi:

Another steel bridge of 100 m length has been launched for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project on August 25 near Silvassa in Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

This 1464 MT steel bridge of 14.6 m in height and 14.3 m in width has been fabricated at the workshop in Trichy, Tamil Nadu and was transported on trailers to the site for installation.

A temporary launching nose spanning 84 meters and weighing 600 MT was connected with the main bridge for launching, to avoid any intermediate support. Additional temporary members were also installed to strengthen the bridge during launching.

A total of 27,500 nos. of HSFG (High-strength friction grip) bolts were utilised to connect the components of the launching nose and approximately 55,250 nos. of Tor-Shear Type High Strength (TTHS) bolts with C5 system painting and elastomeric bearings, were utilized for the main bridge.

The steel bridge along with the launching nose was assembled near the site at a height of 14.5 m from the ground on temporary trestles and was pulled with an automatic mechanism of 2 semi-automatic jacks, each of capacity of 250 tons using mac-alloy bars.

The Bullet Train project is being executed meticulously, maintaining the utmost standards of safety and engineering excellence. Leveraging Japanese expertise, India is increasingly utilizing its own technical and material resources to build infrastructure under the “Make in India” initiative.

This is the fourth out of the 28 steel bridges, completed for the Bullet Train corridor.

There are a total of 24 river bridges in the project, 20 are in Gujarat and 4 in Maharashtra. Out of 20 bridges in Gujarat, 10 have been completed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his then-Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe launched the project in Ahmedabad on September 14, 2017.

National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) was incorporated on February 12, 2016, under the Companies Act, 2013 with the object of financing, constructing, maintaining and managing the High-Speed Rail Corridor in India.

The Company has been modeled as a ‘Special Purpose Vehicle’ in the joint sector with equity participation by the Central Government through the Ministry of Railways and two State Governments — Government of Gujarat and Government of Maharashtra.

Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation.

Dhaka:

The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh remains functional, and senior diplomats and essential staff continue to remain in the country, sources told ANI. Non-essential staff and families of Indian diplomatic missions have returned to India on a voluntary basis through a commercial flight, the sources said.

Amid political unrest in Bangladesh, an Air India flight from Dhaka carrying 199 passengers and six infants landed in Delhi early this morning. Air India operated a special charter flight at short notice despite infrastructure challenges at Dhaka Airport late last night and landed in Delhi early this morning, as per information provided by sources.

Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation, with Sheikh Hasina tendering her resignation from her post in the wake of mounting protests on August 5. The protests, led mainly by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs, evolved into anti-government demonstrations.

A day after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister of Bangladesh and left the country, President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the country’s parliament to make way for the formation of an interim administration, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, the Dhaka Tribune reported. The Bangladesh President’s Press Secretary, Joynal Abedin, made the announcement.

The decision regarding the appointment of Bangladesh’s interim government head was made during a meeting between President Shahabuddin and the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that there are an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals, of whom about 9000 are students, while ensuring the country that the government is in close contact with the Indian community in Dhaka.

Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha that the bulk of the students returned to India in July.

“We are in close and continuous touch with the Indian community in Bangladesh through our diplomatic missions. There are an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals there, of which about 9000 are students. The bulk of the students returned in July,” he said.

He also said that Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested approval from India to come at very short notice, and she arrived on the evening of Monday.

“On August 5, demonstrators converged in Dhaka despite the curfew. Our understanding is that after a meeting with leaders of the security establishment, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina apparently made the decision to resign. At very short notice, she requested approval to come for the moment to India. We simultaneously received a request for flight clearance from Bangladeshi authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi,” he said.

The External Affairs Minister also mentioned that the government is monitoring the situation with regard to the minorities living in Bangladesh. Jaishankar noted that ties between India and Bangladesh are exceptionally close.

“Since the election in January 2024, there have been considerable tensions, deep divides, and growing polarisation in Bangladesh politics, and “this underlying foundation aggravated a student agitation that started in June this year.”

“There was growing violence, including attacks on public buildings, and violence continued in July. We counselled restraint and urged the situation to be resolved by dialogue, Jaishankar said in his statement in Rajya Sabha.

He said that the growing violence included attacks on public buildings and infrastructure, as well as traffic and rail obstructions.

Jaishankar said, “Throughout this period, we repeatedly counselled restraint and urged that the situation be defused through dialogue. Similar urgings were made to various political forces with whom we were in touch.”

Court noted “contradictions” appearing in the statements of witnesses (Representational)

New Delhi:

Over nine years after a man was charged with rape, a court has acquitted him, saying the testimonies of the alleged victim were not clear, cogent, credible or trustworthy, nor were her allegations corroborated by other material evidence.

Additional Sessions Judge Priyanka Bhagat of Tis Hazari district court was hearing a case against Mahender, against whom the Subzi Mandi police station had lodged an FIR under penal provisions of rape and criminal intimidation.

According to the prosecutrix, in 2014, Mahender took her to Nainital where he spiked her food, raped her after she fell unconscious and filmed the act.

After the woman returned to Delhi, the accused threatened to circulate the video clip and raped her again at an under-construction building after keeping her in confinement, she claimed.

“…The testimonies of prosecution witness 12 or victim are not clear, cogent, credible and trustworthy and the same are not corroborated by other material evidence,” the court said in its verdict dated July 9.

“For the reasons stated above, this court is of the considered opinion that the prosecution has failed to prove the case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt. Hence, accused Mahender is hereby acquitted,” the bench said.

Underscoring that the prosecution’s entire case was based on the statement of the woman, the court said there were some major contradictions in her version regarding the incident of spiking her food, which affected the credibility of her statements.

There were also some improvements in her testimony, it said.

“The entire case of the prosecution is that the prosecutrix was repeatedly raped on the blackmailing that accused Mahender would viral the said video, however, the said video was never brought into evidence by the prosecution,” the court said.

Regarding the allegations of rape in the under-construction building, the court noted the alleged victim’s testimony where she admitted that when she went to meet Mahender, other people who were working there were also present.

“Thus, the version of the prosecutrix that she was raped in a building where other persons were also working is not probable especially when the prosecutrix was also crying as stated in her complaint,” it said.

The court said there was no explanation regarding why the woman did not complain to the people working there or immediately file a police complaint and this discredited her version that she was raped under the threat to circulate the said obscene video.

Regarding the alleged incident of wrongful confinement from November 11 to 15, 2014, the court again noted her “contradictory statements”.

It said the alleged victim had admitted that she had access to Mahender’s mobile phone during the reported confinement and this meant she had every opportunity to take outside help, which she chose not to do so, and this discredited her testimony.

The court said during the alleged confinement, she made a call to the accused’s brother-in-law Gopal Krishan, who had recorded the conversation.

It noted that the said recording was retrieved from the said mobile phone and the voice of the prosecutrix and Krishan was duly proved by the prosecution itself vide a forensic science laboratory (FSL) report.

“This conversation also corroborates that the prosecutrix on her own went to live with accused Mahender and when the accused did not live with her then she made the call to the brother-in-law of accused namely Gopal Krishan and subsequently had falsely implicated the brother-in-law as well,” the court said.

It noted the reply of a woman sub-inspector, as per whom, the prosecutrix was persuading Krishan to facilitate her meetings with Mahender, otherwise, she would name him in the rape case.

The court said the version of the witness should be natural and it must corroborate the prosecution case and it should be of such a quality that there should not be any shadow of doubt upon it.

“The contradictions and inconsistencies appearing in the statements of witnesses create serious doubts about the prosecution story. The version brought on record by the victim is not even corroborated by any other evidence brought on record,” it said.

“We reviewed CCTV footage and used technical intelligence”, says Cops (Representational)

New Delhi:

Four individuals, including a minor, were arrested in connection with the extortion from gym owner case, an official said.

“4 members, including a juvenile in Conflict with the Law (CCL) of the Gogi-Deepak Boxer-Sunny Kakran gang, who fired on a Gym Owner in Burari for extortion, have been arrested,” Delhi Police said.

Giving further details about the arrest, DCP North Manoj Kumar Meena told ANI, “We received a call at 10 pm. The caller told us that a bullet was fired in the air in front of him and he was also threatened. Two individuals who had fired the shots were chased away, and while fleeing, they stole a motorcycle belonging to a labourer from the Swaroop Nagar area.”

“We reviewed CCTV footage and used technical intelligence, leading to the identification of one of the individuals who was not at home and had fled. Raids were conducted, resulting in the arrest of four including a juvenile,” DCP Meena said.

“Among the three arrested individuals, Nikhil has a prior case of murder and attempted murder from 2022. Mohit has two cases of robbery from 2022. While, Gagandeep has been arrested for providing shelter to the other accused,” DCP Meena added.

“In this case, we have applied a new criminal law section that treats involving juveniles in crimes as a separate offence. This section allows for penalties not only for the juvenile but also for those who encouraged or compelled them to commit the crime,” DCP Meena said.
