Ligue 1: PSG defeat Nice 2-1© AFP

Paris Saint-Germain brushed aside the absence of the departing Kylian Mbappe to beat Nice 2-1 in Ligue 1 on Wednesday and scupper their opponents’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. Mbappe, who will leave PSG when his contract expires at the end of the season, sat out the trip due to discomfort in his left hamstring, while Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi and Randal Kolo Muani were also missing. Bradley Barcola put PSG ahead in the 18th minute before defender Yoram Zague celebrated his 18th birthday by scoring his first goal for the French champions in only his fourth senior appearance.

Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled a goal back for Nice just past the half hour but Melvin Bard was sent off with 15 minutes to play for a challenge on Barcola.

The defeat left Nice four points behind Lille and Brest, who are battling for the third automatic Champions League qualifying spot going into the final round of matches this Sunday.

Nice are now guaranteed to finish fifth and will go into next season’s Europa League group stage.

Marseille risk missing out on Europe altogether after a 1-0 loss at managerless Reims.

Chancel Mbemba‘s own goal in the first half condemned Marseille to defeat and left them three points behind Lens and Lyon in the race for a Europa Conference League place.

Kylian Mbappe scored one goal and made another as Paris Saint-Germain beat Patrick Vieira’s Strasbourg 3-0 in Ligue 1 on Saturday but it is unbeaten Nice who are top of the table after a 1-0 victory over Marseille. Mbappe opened the scoring for PSG with a 10th-minute penalty and set up Carlos Soler to make it 2-0 just after the half-hour mark on a wet and windy day in Paris. The reigning champions added a third in the 77th minute courtesy of Fabian Ruiz to wrap up a routine victory.

It was a second straight win for PSG following their 4-1 defeat away to Newcastle United in the Champions League earlier this month, and they sit a point behind Nice in second place.

“The logical concern with these games straight after an international break is that it is clearly not easy for the players to switch their mentality but the team played well and managed the game very well,” said PSG coach Luis Enrique.

He rested several regular starters with this game also coming just before a key Champions League meeting with AC Milan.

Achraf Hakimi and Ousmane Dembele were among those to be left out at kick-off, while Soler and Ruiz came in, as did Lee Kang-in.

South Korean international Lee was making his first appearance for PSG in over a month, having helped his country win football gold at the Asian Games in the meantime.

“In general all those players who have been involved less up to now this season did well. They got an opportunity today and made the most of it,” said Luis Enrique.

Ten-man Marseille beaten

However, there was no question of Mbappe being rested, and he opened the scoring from the penalty spot in front of an empty end of PSG’s stadium, closed by the French league for this encounter as a punishment after homophobic chanting during a win over Marseille last month.

The penalty was awarded for a foul on Goncalo Ramos, and Mbappe converted for his ninth club goal this season.

South African striker Lebo Mothiba then thought he had equalised for Strasbourg, only for his goal to be disallowed for offside following a VAR check.

Instead PSG doubled their lead on 31 minutes as Mbappe produced a step-over to beat his marker before cutting the ball back from the byline for Soler to prod in.

Soler set up the third goal late on for his fellow Spaniard Ruiz, not long after PSG suffered a scare when Mbappe went down needing treatment after Gerzino Nyamsi appeared to tread on his left foot.

However, the France captain managed to carry on.

Having sent out a team loaded with attacking players, just as he did in the defeat by Newcastle, Luis Enrique must decide whether to play the same way against Milan.

“Each match is different,” he insisted, “but my objective is to have 11 players attacking and 11 defending.”

It was a third straight loss for Strasbourg, with the club who were recently bought by Chelsea’s owners BlueCo struggling for goals and having won just once in six games now.

“My young players need to learn and learn very quickly,” said Vieira, whose line-up featured five outfield players aged 22 or under.

“We competed but we made too many mistakes to stand a chance.”

Later, the Mediterranean derby was decided when Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi was sent off for a second yellow card and substitute Evann Guessand headed in the resulting free-kick in the 79th minute.

The result maintained Nice’s unbeaten record this season under 34-year-old Italian coach Francesco Farioli and left them top, although Cote d’Azur rivals Monaco will replace them at the summit by beating Metz on Sunday.

Nice have enjoyed a fine start to the season despite British owner Jim Ratcliffe being focused on acquiring a stake in Manchester United.

“We need to look at the league table as little as possible, but it has been a very positive start to the season,” said Farioli.

Marseille have won only once in four games under new coach Gennaro Gattuso and are seven points behind the leaders.

Ligue 1 side Nice suspended Algerian international Youcef Atal “until further notice” on Wednesday after he shared a controversial post on social media linked to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. Even though he quickly deleted the post and apologised, the club said in a press release that, given the “seriousness” of the post, it was taking immediate disciplinary action “prior to any action that may be taken by the sporting and legal authorities”. French prosecutors on Monday launched a preliminary investigation into Atal on suspicion of “glorifying terrorism”.

Atal, 27, was called into a meeting with the club hierarchy following his return from international duty with Algeria, during which period he made the post.

“We would like to emphasise that the reputation and unity of OGC Nice depends on the behaviour of all of its employees, who must be in accordance with the values defended by the institution,” said the club, adding its “firm commitment to ensuring that peace prevails over all other considerations”.

Atal has been widely criticised since Saturday for sharing a video from a Palestinian preacher on Instagram, purportedly calling for violence against Jewish people.

Football officials, politicians, a Jewish group and the mayor of Nice have all condemned the message, which Atal deleted before apologising.

AFP has not been able to independently verify the content of the original post.

France, which has large Jewish and Muslim populations, ramped up security after Hamas launched a massive attack on Israel on October 7.

And officials put the country on high alert for potential attacks after a teacher was stabbed to death on Friday by a former pupil, in what politicians have said was Islamist terrorism.

The Nice prosecutor’s office confirmed in a statement it was investigating Atal under laws covering the “glorification of terrorism” after being notified by local politicians.

The prosecutors said police would also assess if the post amounted to incitement to religious hatred or violence.

The South East branch of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF) filed a complaint against the player on Tuesday.

The French Football Federation (FFF) has not commented since saying on Sunday its ethics committee would investigate the player.

Atal responded to the criticism, telling his Instagram followers he would “never support a message of hate”, without explaining why he had shared the video.

The French Football Federation (FFF) said on Sunday its ethics committee would investigate Nice player Youcef Atal for social media posts containing “calls for violence”, linked to the Hamas-Israel conflict. The Algerian international defender posted a video on Instagram account of a speaker making, according to people who saw it, anti-Semitic remarks calling for violence. The post sparked outrage from French politicians. It has since been deleted and AFP has been unable to independently verify its content.

On Sunday FFF president Philippe Diallo released statement denouncing “calls for violence relayed by the 27-year-old player”.

“They are contrary to the ethics of our sport and the values that soccer relentlessly defends”, he said.

“The FFF condemns them in the strongest possible terms. Hate speech cannot be tolerated,” he declared, announcing that the FFF’s national ethics council had been informed.

Atal apologised on Instagram on Sunday.

“I am aware that my publication shocked people, which was not my intention, and I apologise for that,” he wrote, adding that he wanted to “clarify (his) point of view without any ambiguity: I strongly condemn all forms of violence, anywhere in the world, and I support all victims”.

“I will never support a message of hatred. Peace is an ideal in which I firmly believe”, he said.

Contacted by AFP, the Nice public prosecutor’s office said it was not yet investigating.

Israel declared war on Hamas last Sunday, a day after waves of fighters broke through the heavily fortified border with Gaza and killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians.

Israel’s response has left at least 2,450 people dead in the Gaza Strip, the majority ordinary Palestinians, the health ministry there said
