Marseille Stun Lyon With 95th-Minute Winner After Early Red Card

Marseille came from behind to beat Lyon 3-2 away from home after being reduced to 10 men early in the match on Sunday courtesy of a 95th-minute winner by Jonathan Rowe. The result sent Roberto De Zerbi’s resurgent side second in Ligue 1, level on 13 points with Paris Saint-Germain but with an inferior goal difference. Ex-Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car opened the scoring for Lyon in a chaotic ‘Olympico’ derby, marked by late goals and an early red card. Pol Lirola levelled for Marseille, before Ulisses Garcia sent them ahead with under 10 minutes remaining.

Rayan Cherki looked to have claimed a point for Lyon in the third minute of added time only for Rowe to piledrive a winner for Marseille from the edge of the box two minutes later.

The match lived up to its feisty billing as one of France’s most intense rivalries with Marseille’s Leonardo Balerdi picking up a yellow card inside 30 seconds for a heavy challenge on Corentin Tolisso.

The Marseille captain then got his marching orders inside five minutes for a second bookable offence when he hauled down Alexandre Lacazette.

“He made a mistake and he knows it,” said De Zerbi. “But we dedicate this victory to him and he remains our captain.

“In this squad, when someone is in difficulty, we don’t abandon him.”

A man to the good, Lyon dominated but failed to translate this onto the scoresheet.

First-half controversy then continued when deep in added time, Lyon were awarded a penalty for handball after a lengthy VAR review.

Lacazette’s effort from 12 yards was repelled by Geronimo Rulli and the Lyon captain, under intense pressure from the following-in defence, could only blaze the rebound well over the crossbar.

Caleta-Car powered in a 53-minute header following excellent work by Clinton Mata to win the ball and put in a pinpoint cross on the right flank.

But Marseille, despite having subbed off attackers Amine Harit and Elye Wahi, hit back through substitute defender Lirola in the 69th minute when he calmly lifted a one-on-one finish over Lucas Perri.

The shock turnaround continued in the 82nd minute when another replacement defender in Garcia strode onto Lirola’s cross and bounced a first-time finish over the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

The drama was not finished, however, as Cherki bundled in a cross at the near post to seemingly ensure Pierre Sage’s side would share the spoils.

Rowe then stole the show for Marseille as he drove forward from the left wing, beat two defenders and thrashed the ball across Perri and inside the far post.

Monaco keep pace

Monaco saw off a battling Le Havre 3-1 to preserve their unbeaten record.

The Principality side backed up their impressive midweek victory in the Champions League against Barcelona by winning their fourth game in five league outings this term.

Strikes in quick succession midway through the second half by Eliesse Ben Seghir and Folarin Balogun ensured Monaco claimed all three points, after Le Havre’s Daler Kuzyaev had cancelled out Jordan Teze’s early opener.

“I’m very pleased with the win, even if it wasn’t the best game of the season,” said Monaco coach Adi Huetter.

Dutch right-back Teze gave the home side the lead inside 10 minutes, before Kuzyaev got the equaliser with an outside-of-the-foot finish that crept into the far corner.

Rested after his exploits midweek, rising star Ben Seghir restored Monaco’s lead with a moment of individual inspiration in the 66th minute.

Receiving the ball 25 yards from goal, he advanced on the packed defence and shaped the ball beyond the goalkeeper with his right foot from 25 yards.

Balogun wrapped up the points four minutes later when he swept home from George Ilenikhena’s pass.

PSG, Lyon Join Emmanuel Macron In Condemning Fan Violence Before French Cup Final

Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon echoed French President Emmanuel Macron by condemning Sunday the violence that broke out between rival football fans heading to Saturday’s French Cup final that left 38 people hurt and a bus burnt to a crisp. The clashes erupted on Saturday at a toll gate 60 kilometres (40 miles) from the northern city of Lille between fans of Lyon and PSG en route to the showpiece match, which Macron attended. The final went ahead amid heightened security with PSG winning 2-1, but it was overshadowed by the clash involving about 100 Lyon supporters and 200 PSG fans — according to a police source.

One bus was set on fire and two others damaged, local Nord department authorities said in a statement overnight, adding that 30 supporters and eight police officers were injured. Fourteen people required “medical attention”.

In a statement Sunday, PSG said it “condemns in the strongest possible terms the incidents” that occurred between the two sets of fans.

“The club would like to specify that its supporters scrupulously complied with the travel regulations set out in the prefectoral decree before being attacked,” the Parisian club added.

“Such behaviour in no way reflects the values of respect that the club stands for.”

Lyon said in a statement it “condemns this violence” and later blamed “a clear error” in route planning.

“For reasons that are still not clear the police escort decided to pass seven Lyon buses in the middle of the 18 PSG coaches at the toll booth in Fresnes.

“And that was after all parties involved had been working for the past two months on separating the (traffic) flow.

“As a result of such an obvious route error violence erupted with its origin yet to be determined.”

The statement noted that several Lyon fans had been injured by armed PSG supporters.

“The club encourages victims to take legal action from today so that light can be shed on these events.”

Police did not indicate which group of fans launched the attack.

Mingling with the public in nearby Tourcoing ahead of the game, Macron said Saturday he “condemns all violence with the greatest firmness.”

The French Football Federation called the violence “unacceptable”.

Marseille-Lyon Off After Bus Attack As ‘Angry’ Kylian Mbappe Lifts PSG

Sunday’s Ligue 1 match between Marseille and Lyon was postponed after the visitors’ bus was stoned on its way to the ground, while Kylian Mbappe drew the ire of Brest after scoring twice in Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-2 victory. Lyon coach Fabio Grosso’s face was left bloodied and his assistant was also injured as the team bus was pelted with stones en route to the Velodrome, shattering several windows. A club source said Grosso had also been experiencing dizzy spells.

A crisis unit was set up to decide the fate of the match, with Lyon making clear their reluctance for the game to go ahead given the circumstances.

“Based on Lyon’s wishes… the decision was taken not to start the match,” said referee Francois Letexier, adding that reports “have been forwarded to the relevant authorities who will decide what action to take”.

Prime Video footage showed Grosso with a bandage on his head as he came out of the stadium’s medical room.

A photo circulating on X (formerly Twitter) appeared to show Grosso lying on a stretcher with a cut above his left eye.

“These are completely unacceptable circumstances,” said Marseille club president Pablo Longoria.

“My first thought is for Fabio Grosso, someone I respect and have known for a long time. I went to see him as soon as I arrived at the stadium, I saw how he was.”

A second bus containing Lyon supporters was also attacked with stones and the windows damaged, a local police source told AFP.

“These images are revolting. Seeing the stoned bus like that, the bloody face of Fabio Grosso… These are unacceptable acts which go against the very values of football and sport,” French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera told AFP.

“I hope that the investigation will be carried out quickly, that the perpetrators are found and they are severely punished.”

Mbappe silences Brest

Earlier on Sunday, Mbappe struck a late winner at Brest and then riled the opposition and home supporters as he celebrated the goal, pressing his finger to his lips and gesturing to the crowd.

The France captain was booked over the incident and said on social media his actions were due to insults aimed by the crowd at one of his teammates, later confirmed to AFP to be Achraf Hakimi.

Morocco international Hakimi was given preliminary charges of rape in March, accusations the player strongly denies.

“Well of course and I should have even sang with them when they insulted my teammate,” Mbappe wrote in a sarcastic response to a tweet critical of his behaviour.

“Some have really never set foot on a football field no matter the level.”

PSG midfielder Danilo Pereira said the treatment of Hakimi by home fans had made Mbappe “angry”, but Brest coach Eric Roy said he was “a bit surprised” by the reaction from the striker.

“It’s a pretty healthy atmosphere. So of course you can always be jeered. When you have the match you’ve had, you’ve scored two goals, it’s a bit ridiculous. You should be above all that,” said Roy.

“It’s a shame that tarnished the end of the match.”

PSG saw off early season surprise package Brest thanks to a brace from Mbappe either side of half-time and a Warren Zaire-Emery rocket.

Luis Enrique’s side led 2-0 before Steve Mounie pulled a goal back before half-time.

Energised by the goal before half-time, Brest got back on terms thanks to a Jeremy Le Douaron header in the 52nd minute, which appeared to be enough to ensure the points would be shared evenly.

However, a recently revitalised Mbappe stepped up in the 88th minute to claim all three points for PSG, converting after his penalty was saved.

PSG are a point behind leaders Nice, who won 1-0 on Friday at Clermont. Monaco, in third, missed a chance to retake top spot after losing 2-0 at fourth-placed Lille.

Rennes were held 1-1 by Strasbourg, while Montpellier eased to a 3-0 home victory against Toulouse. Metz and Le Havre drew 0-0.
