Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday brushed away reports regarding the non-availability of the venues for the upcoming home Test series against England and confirmed that the series will be in Pakistan. Earlier this week, reports surfaced on social media about a possible shift to the three-match Test series to Sri Lanka or the UAE. It was revealed that due to the ongoing renovation work at the stadiums for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Naqvi cleared the air around such rumours and confirmed that the Tests will be held in Pakistan and told reporters, as quoted from Geo News, “No Tests will be played outside [the country]. Multan and Rawalpindi venues are final.”

In Pakistan’s recently concluded two-match Test series whitewash against Bangladesh, PCB had to shift the second Test to Rawalpindi, which was originally scheduled in Karachi. PCB had already barred the spectators from the second Test in Karachi due to the renovation work.

The decision was taken after the construction experts advised PCB that the construction could continue during the playing hours. As a result, players could get distracted and disturbed due to the noise and dust produced during the construction work.

England all-format head coach Brendon McCullum on Thursday addressed this issue while speaking to reporters at The Oval and said, “We don’t know (what is happening in Pakistan), but we can’t pick a team until we know where we’re going to play,” he said. “It would be nice if, over the next couple of days, we found out. Then we’ll sit down and make sure we’ve got the right team for the right conditions and the right opposition.”

Pakistan will host England for a three-match Test series, which is a part of the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. The first of the three Tests will begin on October 7 in Multan. The second Test will be played in Karachi, beginning on October 15, and the third red-ball clash is in Rawalpindi on October 24.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to hold a “Connection Camp,” a meeting and workshop of the board’s top brass that will decide the future course of actions of Pakistan cricket, sources told Geo News. The sources also informed Geo News that Pakistan white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten, red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie, senior cricketers, senior board officials, heads of high-performance centres, and international and domestic directors will attend the camp meeting presided over by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

The meeting is expected to take place on September 22. The sources said the red-ball and white-ball cricket coaches will hold a separate meeting among themselves.

Sources also informed Geo News that ideas will be exchanged regarding replacing captains of all formats of the games.

On Friday, sources told Geo News that wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan is the top contender to replace Babar Azam for the white ball captaincy. Test skipper Shan Masood’s captaincy will also be assessed.

The recent developments come after Pakistan hit rock bottom and dropped to eighth position in the latest ICC Test Rankings, their lowest since 1965.

It was the first instance when Pakistan tasted the sour flavour of defeat against Bangladesh in red-ball cricket. Bangladesh left Pakistan speechless on their home soil and wrapped up the series with a 2-0 whitewash.

Their latest slump marked their lowest ranking in the Test format, barring the period where they did not have a place in the rankings due to an insufficient number of matches.

After enduring yet another defeat, Pakistan will host England for a three-match Test series, which is a part of the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. The first of the three Tests will begin on October 7 in Multan. The second Test will be played in Karachi, beginning on October 15, and the third red-ball clash is scheduled in Rawalpindi on October 24.

Massive Blow For Pakistan Cricket: PCB Forced To Sell Broadcasting Rights For Nearly Half Of Reserve Price https://artifexnews.net/massive-blow-for-pakistan-cricket-pcb-forced-to-sell-broadcasting-rights-for-nearly-half-of-reserve-price-6401820/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 13:09:40 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/massive-blow-for-pakistan-cricket-pcb-forced-to-sell-broadcasting-rights-for-nearly-half-of-reserve-price-6401820/ Read More “Massive Blow For Pakistan Cricket: PCB Forced To Sell Broadcasting Rights For Nearly Half Of Reserve Price” »

The Pakistan Cricket Board has settled for nearly half of its reserve price kept for selling broadcasting rights for the international home matches between the period of August 2024 and December 2026. The broadcasting rights for the Pakistan region have been sold for PKR 1.72 billion, which is at least PKR 1.48 billion less than the initial reserve price of PKR 3.2 billion the board kept for selling the rights. However, the PCB officials, without having sharing any figures, claim that the rights were sold at more than twice the amount from the previous rights cycle (FTP 2021 to 2024).

As per available details, the PCB recently sold its Pakistan region broadcasting rights for the 28-month period to a Pakistani consortium of ARY and Tower Sports and claimed to have sold it for a higher amount when compared with the last contract.

The PCB said that the rights were awarded “following a transparent tender process” in which several bids were received.

The rights are for 11 Tests, including seven in the 2024-25 season, 26 ODIs and 24 T20Is.

The ODIs include a couple of three-nation ODI series in the current and next season.

The fact that no high profile foreign broadcaster showed interest in the Pakistan international home season rights is an indication that the PCB is facing problems in generating revenues expected from broadcasting rights.

Even Pakistan Television, the state owned network, bid PKR 1.6 billion and didn’t bother to increase the amount even though the eventual successful bid was for PKR 1.72 billion.

“It is far less than initially what the PCB had anticipated while keeping its reserve price of PKR 3.2 billion,” a source aware of the developments said.

Additionally, the PTV bought the broadcasting rights after securing the sub-licensing for PKR 500 million from the consortium.

Therefore, both the consortium and the PTV earned profitable deals but PCB failed to make the most jam-packed season financially.

Interestingly, the PCB is now finding it difficult to get a broadcaster in the UK to show the Pakistan and England Test series in October-November with Sky Sports showing no interest at all in securing rights for the UK territory.

But the PCB is confident that with time in hand, it will eventually find a broadcaster for the series in the UK.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has advised his office and fellow colleagues to not issue any statements related to India’s decision on sending its team for the ICC Champions Trophy early next year. According to information gathered by PTI, the PCB chief has adopted a policy for himself and other officials about not commenting on the issue and allowing the ICC to handle the matter. “That is why in recent days there is no comments or statement coming from either Naqvi or any other board official on what will happen if India doesn’t send its team to Pakistan,” one PCB insider said.

He said Naqvi had directed all concerned officials to keep on making preparations for the Champions Trophy assuming India will be sending its team.

“The PCB has sent the draft schedule and submitted all other documents including security plans for each team to the ICC now it is for the owners of the CT to convince India to send its team,” the insider said.

He said Naqvi had made it clear he didn’t want unnecessary controversies in mainstream or social media platforms on India and Pakistan cricket issue.

A venue inspection team from the ICC would be coming to Pakistan in September to have a final inspection of the three match venues, Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi and the PCB’s main priority right now is to ensure renovation work on the three stadiums.

“It is clear Naqvi doesn’t want to show the PCB’s cards on what will be the reaction of the board if India again refuses to send its team but behind closed doors after meetings with the government officials a strategy has been finalised,” another source in Islamabad said.

For record, Naqvi is also the federal minister of interior.

Fast-bowling great Waqar Younis is likely to become the new Chief Cricket Officer (CCO) of the Pakistan Cricket Board, having joined the PCB as an advisor to the chairman of cricket affairs temporarily. A source aware of the developments said that the former captain had joined the board in a paid position and not in any advisory position. “Presently, he has been given the title of advisor to the chairman on cricket affairs. But, a new position similar to the one that Rob Key has in the English cricket board is being created for him and would be approved by the Board of Governors,” the source said.

The source added that Waqar, once given his new position, would also be part of the national selection committee and involved in issues linked to central contracts.

He said that Waqar had agreed to join as an advisor but first wanted to get acclimatised to his new role on the board.

He recently worked with various departments to learn about all the cricket-related matters, including international and domestic schedules, preparations and strategies for the coming international games and tests etc.

The fast bowler, who has been the bowling coach and head coach of the Pakistan team several times, agreed to join the PCB after relocating from Australia to Lahore with his family.

“He relocated last year to Lahore,” the source said.

Pakistan’s star trio Babar Azam, Mohammed Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, are unlikely to get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for featuring in the upcoming Global T20 Canada, sources told Geo News. The sources informed Geo News that the players won’t get an NOC despite the league schedule, avoiding any clashes with Pakistan’s international fixtures. Pakistan will play the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, which will kick off on August 21. The Canadian League will be played from July 25 to August 11.

It was also reported that the reason for the likely denial of the NOC is that players playing in all formats will not be issued the certificate according to the policy. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is not in favour of issuing NOCs to players because of the hectic schedule that lies ahead of them.

Star pacer Naseem Shah was also denied an NOC last week to feature in The Hundred. The sources informed Geo News that, after reviewing the application submitted by the Pakistan cricketer, the decision to deny the NOC has been taken as a preventive measure.

The sources stated that Naseem’s application has been dismissed to safeguard him from injuries since the youngster features in all three formats for Pakistan and suffered injuries and fitness challenges last year.

Apart from the star trio, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Nawaz, Asif Ali, and Iftikhar Ahmed also have Global T20 Canada contracts.

Earlier this week, PCB chairman Naqvi stated that the players would get the NOC based on certain criteria. Players who fulfil the criteria will get the NOC.

“The players will be promoted on the basis of their fitness and performance. There’s no place for players who do not fit the criteria. There’ll also be no compromise on discipline,” said PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi.

In their crucial World Test Championship matches against Bangladesh, Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillispie has already hinted at the possible unavailability of star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi for the series.

Shaheen and his wife, Ansha, who got married last year, are expecting the birth of their first child. Due to this, he could miss the Test series against Bangladesh next month.

“Shaheen can miss Bangladesh Test matches due to childbirth. We can give him [some] rest if he wants to stay with his wife till then,” Pakistan’s red-ball coach, Jason Gillispie, said last week.

In the wake of Pakistan’s dismal showing in the T20 World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, Mohsin Naqvi on Tuesday gave head coaches Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie a free hand to turn the fortunes of the team, according to sources. Pakistan lost to newcomers USA and arch-rivals India in the Group stages of the World Cup to be eliminated from the competition held in the USA and the Caribbean. Naqvi met the white-ball and red-ball coaches, where Kirsten and Gillespie shared their plans for the national team.

According to the PCB, Naqvi told both the coaches that he had full confidence in them and they would get full backing from the cricket board.

“Kirsten was blunt in laying down his concerns about the white-ball team based on the World Cup,” said a PCB source.

Both the head coaches told the PCB chairman that they wanted to set clear guidelines about the fitness levels required to be considered for Pakistan team selection.

“Naqvi told them they should do whatever is necessary to change the fortunes of the team and no one would ask them to make any compromises on selection or the fitness of players,” the source added.

Kirsten had warned senior pros in the side following the team’s loss to the USA and India to adapt to new skill-sets and improve their game awareness, or get left behind. Senior team manager, Wahab Riaz, in his report submitted to Naqvi, had outlined personality clashes in the side during the World Cup.

“The PCB chief said both the coaches had a free hand to take whatever decisions they wanted to improve the performances of the team in red-ball and white-ball formats.” Assistant coach Azhar Mahmood was also present during the meeting.

The source added that Kirsten, while discussing his experience with the Pakistan team during the World Cup, told Naqvi that there was a need to rebuild combinations in the white-ball format and also change the mindset of players.

Kirsten and Gillespie had agreed to become white-ball and red-ball coaches respectively a few months before the World Cup after Naqvi approached them and offered them long-term contracts with the assurance that they would be given proper opportunities to implement their plans.

Kirsten has also worked with the Indian team and comes to Pakistan with a big reputation.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has invited 25 former international cricketers for a meeting to discuss steps to improve the domestic cricket structure. Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB chief, and other board officials will meet the former stalwarts on Monday to find their views and suggestions. The parley will touch upon the ways to reduce the gap in the standards of Pakistan domestic competitions and international cricket. The meeting will also consider a comprehensive blueprint submitted by another former player on the problems with the existing cricket system in the country.

However, this is not the first time the PCB has undertaken such an exercise as the format of the domestic tournaments remains an issue since 2018.

After the First-Class competition was reduced to just six teams when Imran Khan became Prime Minister, the board under Zaka Ashraf last year reverted to the old system of having departmental teams in First-Class format.

The meeting will also consider the domestic contracts given to around 360 cricketers in different formats in the country.

The Pakistan Cricket Board might not be able bring about major changes in the national team in the wake of the side’s dismal performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 as that could lead to a confrontation with senior players, according to sources. PCB’s governing board, scheduled to meet here on Saturday, will take cognizance of white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten and senior team manager Wahab Riaz’s reports submitted to chairman Mohsin Naqvi. But a source said, only cosmetic changes will take place and the “same set of players” would likely continue to play.

Naqvi had been quoted as saying following Pakistan’s defeat to India in the World Cup that a “major surgery” was required in the team.

“The reports by Kirsten and Riaz will help the Governing Board and chairman Naqvi decide the next course of action but all indications are there Naqvi doesn’t want a confrontation with senior players and he has also been advised against massive changes in the team,” a source told PTI.

“There are so many outside voices and pressures from within the system that all this talk about big changes is unlikely to happen. So, basically, with a few changes, the same set of players will be in the Pakistan team for coming games as well in all formats,” he added.

On whether Babar Azam would be retained as white-ball captain following the dismal T20 World Cup showing, another source said that while there is a group, including some former Test captains, which wants to see Shaheen Afridi replace Babar, if there are changes, the prime candidates for captaincy would be Shan Masood and Muhammad Rizwan.

“You could see cosmetic changes, like changes in the selection committee, and the same old story of reorganising domestic cricket to help do damage control. But the senior players remain strong,” he said.

Kirsten’s report is said to contain the same observations he made during his interaction with the players in the dressing room after the match against Ireland in the Group stage.

Kirsten had warned senior pros in the side following the team’s loss to the USA and India to adapt to new skill-sets and improve their game awareness or get left behind. Wahab, on the other hand, outlined personality clashes in the side during the World Cup.

Pakistan next play a two-Test series against Bangladesh followed by three Tests against England. It is unlikely that senior players like Babar and Rizwan would want to take a break from these assignments.

Pakistan team’s current media manager Umar Farooq Kalson and board’s GM (International Cricket) Adnan Ali are under scanner after pictures and video footages emerged of the duo visiting a Colombo casino. Both are in Colombo in official capacity as a part of the Pakistani contingent for the ongoing Asia Cup and visiting a gambling den is sure to attract attention of ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit as it is one of the prohibited places as per code of conduct. Many Pakistani fans on social media questioned how officials of the PCB could be so “immature” and “careless” as to indulge in gambling.

Many criticised the trend of many PCB officials going on to Colombo during the Asia Cup on official visits.

A PCB source said that at least 15-20 PCB officials had travelled to and fro between Colombo and Lahore while some were stationed there permanently as Pakistan was the official host of the Asia Cup.

After some Pakistani news channels ran headlines, the two officials in the Casino later clarified that they had only gone to the Casino to have dinner, a claim ridiculed by all and sundry on social media and also by some former test players.

“Who goes to a Casino to have food. Who goes to a gambling joint to have food. Who are they trying to fool,” cricket writer Omair Alavi said.

The source said the two PCB officials shouldn’t have gone to the Casino where gambling was taking place.

“They could face strict disciplinary action on return,” he added.

The PCB’s Cricket Management Committee, according to him, would be hard pressed to ignore the incident despite the clarification from the two officials.

Former Test opener Mohsin Khan also expressed surprise at the irresponsible behaviour of the two PCB officials to go to a Casino during the tournament.

Ironically during the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Pakistan’s former captain Moin Khan who was manager and chief selector with the team, was called back to Pakistan in the middle of the tournament after he and his wife were spotted at a Casino in Christchurch before a match against West Indies.

Moin also claimed his innocence that they had gone to have dinner but the then PCB Chairman, Shaharyar Khan made it clear that Moin had breached the team’s and his contractual code of conduct.

Khan at that time had justified his strong action to recall and then sack Moin by pointing out that all PCB officials and players had to adhere to the board’s and ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code which strictly advised against visiting places where gambling takes place or there are increased chances of corruption.

Apparently one senior official was even given a dressing down by Jay Shah during a meeting in Pallekele.

The ACC chairman and BCCI supremo Shah apparently reacted strongly to some of the comments made by the PCB official at the meeting.
