The Indian men’s hockey team will look to press the restart button after a successful Olympic campaign and defend its Asian Champions Trophy title when it open its campaign against hosts China in Hulunbuir, China on Sunday. After bagging back-to-back Olympic bronze medals, India will start as favourites to defend their ACT title against top hockey playing nations of Asia in the form of China, Japan, Pakistan, Korea and Malaysia. Last year, India won the title at home, making them the only team to bag four titles in the history of the tournament.

Back from a short break after the Paris Olympics, India skipper Harmanpreet Singh is keen on continuing their dominance in the continental championships.

“The Asian Champions Trophy last year gave us the right momentum going into the Asian Games and followed it up with the Olympic Games triumph of standing on the podium yet again. This time too, we want to begin the fresh Olympic cycle by winning this tournament,” Harmanpreet said ahed of their tournament opener.

“While we have 10 members from the Olympic side playing in this tournament, we have a few youngsters trying to make their impact in the team.

“In terms of game point-of-view, our attacking and penalty corners are our forte but we will be looking to play a structured defence, particularly against teams like Japan, Malaysia and Pakistan. This is an important tournament for us in terms of world ranking points and we are ready for the challenge,” he added.

After China, India will take on Japan in their second match on September 9, followed by games against last year’s runners-up Malaysia on September 11, Korea on September 12 and arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14.

The semifinal and final are scheduled for September 16 and 17.

Head coach Roelant Oltmans ended his association with the Pakistan hockey team after he refused to join the side in China for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy, citing the lack of a long-term contract. Oltmans, who has been working with the senior team from earlier this year, was scheduled to join the team directly in Hulunbuir but pulled out at the last moment. “Oltmans has notified the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) that he is not available for coaching as he wants a long-term proper contract with the PHF,” an official source in the PHF said.

The six-team ACT tournament is scheduled to be held between September 8 and 17.

The PHF source said Oltmans, who had also worked as Indian hockey team’s High Performance Director and head coach between 2013 and 2017, was offered an “event-to-event” contract.

“The PHF has been hiring him on assignment basis due to fund issues and he was supposed to coach the team during the event in China and then return home,” the source said.

“But Oltmans has now made it clear that he can’t work on an event-to-event basis and if the PHF requires his expertise they need to offer him a long-term contract,” the source added.

To make matters worse for Pakistan, captain Ammad Butt has not got along with the two local coaches, who are travelling with the team to China.

The PHF has faced a financial crunch for a while now and the Pakistan Sports Board has also refused to release funds of 50 million rupees for 27 players and six officials for the ACT.

The PSB, however, said it had offered to pay for the air tickets of 19 players and four officials as the funds being demanded by the PHF were high.

Three Pakistan hockey players and a physiotherapist have been banned for life for attempting to seek asylum in a European country after slipping away without the knowledge of the Pakistan Hockey Federation. PHF secretary-general Rana Mujahid confirmed on Thursday that Murtaza Yaqoob, Ihtesham Aslam and Abdur Rahman, along with physiotherapist Waqas, had gone to the Netherlands and Poland last month for the Nations Cup. “When the team returned home and we announced a training camp for the Asian Champions Trophy, the three informed us that due to domestic issues they wouldn’t be able to attend the camp,” Mujahid said.

“Later we came to know that they had flown out to Holland once again on the same Schengen visas issued to the team and sought political asylum there,” he added.

Mujahid said it was a “disappointing” episode for Pakistan hockey, which would make it difficult to apply for visas to European countries for international competitions.

He said that the PHF Congress had approved the lifetime ban and asked the PHF president to make efforts through the Pakistan consulate to bring them back for disciplinary action.

“We have already notified the interior and foreign ministries for further action,” he added.

The former Olympian acknowledged that while the PHF’s financial situation was challenging and that players had faced delays in their travel allowances and daily subsistence payments, these issues did not justify abandoning the national team and bringing disrepute to the country.

Defending champions India came from behind twice to hold arch-rivals Pakistan to a 3-3 draw in a thrilling opening match of the Sultan of Johor Cup junior men’s hockey tournament in Johor Bahru on Friday. Goals from Amandeep Lakra (30th minute), Aditya Arjun Lalage (56th) and Uttam Singh (59’th) ensured a point for India after Arbaz Ahmad (31st, 58th) and Abdul Shahid (49th) scored for Pakistan. Both the teams lived up to the billing in the opening match of the tournament, considered as a litmus test for all participating sides ahead of the forthcoming men’s Junior World Cup to be held in Malaysia this December.

The first big scoring opportunity came in the 12th minute but India’s Angad Bir Singh’s shot went across the goal with no one at the far end to tap the ball in.

Even though neither team came up with potent attacking formations in the first quarter, both the sides defended well.

The second quarter saw Pakistan make a strong start with a penalty in the opening minute, but India defended stoutly.

India then got a few chances in the circle, and also earned their first penalty corner which went wasted.

The defending champions finally drew the first blood in the 30th minute, seconds before the half-time hooter through dragflicker Amandeep.

But a minute after the change of ends, Pakistan drew level through a penalty corner conversion by Arbaz Ahmad.

Showcasing positive body language, the Indian colts didn’t seem perturbed by the goal and continued to build on their attack.

Poovana Boby Chandura took a brave shot on goal in the 39th minute but was well-saved by the Pakistani goalkeeper Ali Raza.

The next few minutes saw India made a few forays into Pakistan’s striking circle, but a goal remained elusive.

With the scores levelled at 1-1, both the teams went all out for the three points.

And Pakistan managed to take the lead in the 49th minute when their captain Abdul Shahid scored past Indian goalkeeper Mohit.

India pressed hard and secured a penalty corner in the 50th minute, only to be denied by the Pakistani goalkeeper.

With five minutes left on the clock, India found another opportunity through another penalty corner and this time Aditya scored from a rebound.

Just under three minutes from the final hooter, Pakistan restored their lead when a penalty corner was well-converted by Arbaz.

With minutes left in the game, Uttam scored a brilliant field goal to save India.

India will take on hosts Malaysia on Saturday.

The Men in Blue began to play a possession-based game and pressed deeper, only for Pakistan to double its lead via Arshad Liaqat in the 19th minute.

While Mohammed Raheel immediately pulled one back for India at the same time, the Indians upped their ante and began attacking from all corners.

In the 26th minute, Mohammed Raheel received a long pass and dribbled past Pakistan’s under-pressure defence, striking the ball home to draw level again.

Both teams failed to score a winner, and as things went to the shootout, Gurjot Singh and Maninder Singh scored for India.

For Pakistan, Arshad Liaqat and Muhammad Murtaza missed their attempts, allowing the Men in Blue to lift the title.

As India tried to get back into the match with a quick move, Pakistan goalkeeper Ali Raza made a good save and initiated a counter-attack, leading to Aslam doubling their lead.

Maninder tried to hold the ball in the middle, but Hayat intercepted and took a shot from a distance to score another goal for Pakistan.
