India and Pakistan are set to face off in the Asia Cup for the second time in the ongoing edition on Sunday. Last week, the India vs Pakistan group stage match was washed out due to rain in Pallekele, with both teams sharing a point each. The focus will be on the rain gods as India and Pakistan square off once again, this time at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. On Friday, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) added a reserve day for the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan.

“A reserve day has been incorporated for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4’s match between India and Pakistan scheduled to take place on 10th September at Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. If adverse weather suspends play during the Pak vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended,” the ACC said in a statement.

As anticipation builds for the clash of the two Asia giants, weather conditions are casting a shadow over the fixture as the forecast predicts as rain could play spoilsport on both, the game day as well as the reserve day.

As per Weather.com, there is a 90-100 per cent chance of rain in Colombo on Sunday, with thunderstorms.

On the reserve day, there is a 90 per cent chance of rain, alongwith thunderstorms.

Accuweather also predicts high probablity of rain with 94 and 95 per cent cloud cover on Sunday and Monday, respectively.

“Cloudy with a couple of thunderstorms, especially late in the day,” the forecast read.

The India vs Pakistan match is the only one in the Super Four stage to have a reserve day.

However, the coaches of both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh — the other two teams in round two — have voiced their displeasure over the exemption granted by the ACC.

The exemption, however, has been granted keeping in mind that the clash of arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, brings in a lot of revenue for broadcasters.

While commenting on Virat Kohli‘s dismissal against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2023, former India pacer S Sreesanth said that he doesn’t count it as a ‘wicket’. Notably, Kohli became a victim of Shaheen Afridi in India’s campaign opener against Pakistan at the continental event last week. It was a good length ball from Shaheen and Kohli got an inside edge on it. The ball first hit his pad and then changed its direction to fall onto the stumps. Sreesanth added that Pakistan were lucky to get the wicket of the star India batter.

“It was unfortunate for India. Pakistan were lucky to get Virat Kohli’s wicket because it was an inside edge. I don’t count it as a wicket. I know him personally, which is why I know what would have been going through his mind after seeing Pakistan’s celebration. I am just waiting for the next India-Pakistan match,” Sreesanth told Sportskeeda.

The India vs Pakistan match in Pallekele was eventually called off due to rain and both the teams shared points. Pakistan could not start their chase as rain eventually forced the match to be abandoned.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 266 runs as Shaheen Afridi picked a four-wicket haul. The left-arm pacer kept the Indian team at bay despite fifties from Hardik Pandya (87) and Ishan Kishan (82).

India were 66 for 4 at one stage but a 138-run partnership between Hardik and Kishan brought them back in the game. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf picked three wickets each, denting India’s progress towards the end. India skipper Rohit won the toss and opted to bat first.

India will next face Pakistan in the Super-4 stage on Sunday.

It’s that time of the cricketing calendar where fans simply can’t afford to let even a minute of action slip by. India and Pakistan are set to face each other. It is after nearly a year that the two Asian cricketing giants will be on the same pitch, looking to outdo each other. But, other than their batting and bowling skills, a third factor could have a bigger impact on the game, deciding which team to favour, or worse, to let the match even take place or not. As India and Pakistan gear up for their first contest in the 2023 Asia Cup, the weather will have a big say in its fate.

As per a report in Accuweather, there will be intermittent rain almost all throughout the day. The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM IST. But, it is going to be hard for the groundsman to prepare have the stadium ready for cricketing action by that time as rain is expected to take place at the venue since morning.

The chances of rain at Pallekele are 84% during the day. To be more specific, in the morning, there’s a 60% chance of rain in the city. Even in the afternoon, there remains 60% chance of a downpour. In the evening, the chances increase to 65%.

Overnight, the chances of precipitation further increase to 69%. Hence, while there may be moments in the match where rain would not happen, wet conditions on the ground are likely to hamper the playing time too.

While Pakistan have already begun their Asia Cup 2023 campaign with a resounding win over Nepal, India will look to get off the mark against their arch-rivals today. Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Iftikhar, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, etc. all looked in supreme form. India, on the other hand, will hope for top performances from their superstars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and especially the returning Jasprit Bumrah.

India will be taking on Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2023 camaign opener on Saturday. This will be the first time that the two sides will be facing each other since their meeting in T20 World Cup last year. For the first time in several months, the Rohit Sharma-led side is having a full-strength team. The Indian team finished a camp on the outskirts of Bengaluru in Alur to prepare themselves ahead of the match against Pakistan. On the other hand, the Babar Azam-led side routed Nepal by 238 runs in the opening game of the continental event.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah have returned to the Indian setup while KL Rahul is set to miss first two games of Asia Cup.

Here what we think could be the playing XI of India vs Pakistan:

Rohit Sharma (Captain): The right-handed batter must be facing the challenge of settling himself down, especially against Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi. Rohit’s captaincy abilities are also going to be tested in such a high-voltage game.

Shubman Gill: The opener has failed to impress of late. His confidence and performance both have dipped after his glorious run in IPL 2023. India will be hoping for a comeback from the star in big game on Saturday.

Virat Kohli: The star batter is slowly and gradually getting back in his groove. His performance will have a big say in the result of the game against Pakistan.

Shreyas Iyer: The batter, who is coming back from injury, must be aiming for a good start on his return. Lack of match practice might be a concern for Iyer, but his experience holds a lot of importance.

Ishan Kishan (Wicketkeeper): Given that KL Rahul is unavailable for the game, Ishan Kishan will play as wicketkeeper in his place. The southpaw is coming on the back of three consecutive ODI fifties against West Indies.

Hardik Pandya (Vice-captain): He is the another key player for India. Hardik is among the rare all-rounders, who can bowl over 140 kmph. The star player has performed against Pakistan in the past as well and would aim to replicate it on Saturday.

Ravindra Jadeja: The presence of the player in the playing XI provides more balance to the team. Apart from playing crucial knocks, Jadeja is too good a bowler to face on turning tracks. Being economical more often than not is just another feature of Jadeja’s bowling.

Kuldeep Yadav: Of late, the left-arm wrist spinner has performed really well. He has been picking wickets consistently for India, providing crucial breakthroughs.

Jasprit Bumrah: The ace pacer of Indian cricket team is back. While playing against Ireland in his comeback match, Bumah looked good if not lethal. He will lead the Indian bowling attack and his performance will play a key role in the game.

Mohammed Siraj: The right-arm pacer has risen through the ranks over the past few years. Controlled aggression with continuously improving bowing quality makes Siraj a tough bowler for the opponents. He is likely to get a chance in the on Saturday.

Mohammed Shami: The right-arm pacer was rested during India’s series against West Indies and Ireland. He last played a game for India back in early June. However, his beautiful control over the ball makes him a special player. India will be needing Shami’s experience in the big game against Pakistan.

On the eve of the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan, Asia Cup 2023 clash, captain Babar Azam said that he has “learned a lot from Virat Kohli”. Notably, both the batters are often compared to each other for their batting brilliance. However, both of them share mutual respect for each other on and off the field. Last month, Virat admitted that he has always held a lot of regard as well as respect for the top ODI batter.

“The debate that has been going on should be left to them. I don’t want to comment on it. Everybody has their point of view. There should be mutual respect. I have been taught that we should respect our seniors. I have learned a lot from him. I have told in a lot of interviews that in 2019 I talked to him and he helped me a lot. He has been helpful,” Babar said in the pre-match conference.

Babar further went on to talk about how demanding the Asia Cup has been and their attempts to find the perfect balance in the squad before the much-awaited World Cup commences.

“We cannot say that the Asia Cup is a small tournament and the best teams of Asia as well as the best players are also playing. At no point in time, you can take it easy. Preparation is definitely for the World Cup but our current focus is on the Asia Cup,” Babar added.

“We are not relaxing at any point we are trying to go either way best we are trying to focus on the cricket that lies ahead of us. We are trying different combinations and we are trying to give our balanced side the most number of opportunities before the big event,” Babar signed off saying.

Both teams will square off at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Virat Kohli knows the cameras will be on him for the next two months. Starting with the Asia Cup and then the Cricket World Cup 2023, Virat Kohli will be expected to deliver. His first test will be in the India vs Pakistan contest in Sri Lanka on Saturday. Virat Kohli has performed well against Pakistan. His cracking six off Haris Rauf at the MCG is still talked about a lot in cricket circles. Australia’s World Cup-winning spinner Brad Hogg is among the admirers of that shot.

Hogg said that Kohli’s hunger should be a cause of concern for the rivals. “I was looking at Virat Kohli’s stats the other day. Tendulkar got a slightly better conversion rate of 100s. Virat Kohli’s got a better record. I just think he has got his hunger back and a little bit of pressure taken off him. I think he’s got unfinished business and that’s probably the big danger for opposition teams. That innings against Pakistan here at the MCG, hitting Haris Rauf back over his head of good length. That was the best shot that I have ever seen in cricket. It was brilliant. Fans got to realize that there is a lot of pressure on Virat Kohli. He also can have ups and downs even the great Sachin Tendulkar had ups and downs. When he has got that right frame of mind and has that pressure off his back we see a dominant Virat Kohli. I am not worried about the Indian batting. I am probably worried about the Indian bowling attack. It is their bowling which doesn’t get them off to a good start,” he said on Backstage with Boria.

After the Asia Cup’s conclusion, teams will prepare to face for the ICC ODI World Cup. The former World Cup-winning Australian spinner picked South Africa as the dark horse to make it to the semis.

“Well, West Indies are out of it. I love the Netherlands and they might upset a team or two, maybe South Africa, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka won’t be involved in the top 4. England too might not make it to the last four as they do not have a stabilized middle order. They don’t have Jofra and I just don’t think they know what their bowling combination will be. We are not going to see a dominant England. They rely too heavily on their top three. I don’t think their middle order is enough experience so they are out of the fire. Pakistan with their spin and pace strength will be very good defensively. Their batters are too aggressive enough. Australia will be going in as favourites. They have enough variety in the middle order, India on their home soil with powerful batting and bowling. South Africa can be the biggest surprise package. Keshav Maharaj can play a huge role. They have quality batting depth and have two fiery pace bowlers in Nortje and Rabada. So, South Africa for me is the team that could upset India and Australia,” said Hogg.

Finally on being asked to comment on Kuldeep Yadav, the Aussie chinaman bowler said, “He had a great IPL this year. He has come back well. What defines a player is someone who has been dropped. He has been out of the game, and worked on his action. He is not falling away as much. He is now getting a more revolution on the ball and drift as well. I think Rohit Sharma captains him well. He is a fighter. Absolutely loved the way he gone about it. Just loved the way he has come back into that team and just performed straightaway.”

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday said the massive 238-run win over Nepal in the Asia Cup opener will give his side confidence ahead of their blockbuster clash against arch-rivals India on Saturday. Pakistan crushed minnows Nepal by a huge margin of 238 runs here in a Group A match to make a winning start to the Asia Cup. Pakistan will now travel to Sri Lanka for the much-anticipated match against India to be played in Pallekele.

“This game was good preparation for the India game because it gave us confidence. We want to give 100 per cent every match, hope to do that there as well,” Babar said after the end of the match. Babar smashed 151, his 19th ODI century while Iftikhar Ahmed (109 not out) hit his maiden ODI ton to power Pakistan to an imposing 342 for six after opting to bat.

Babar was involved in two crucial partnerships after a sedate start — first stitching 86 runs with Mohammad Rizwan (44 off 50) and then sharing an whirlwind 214 runs for the fifth wicket with Iftikhar. In reply, Nepal were bowled out for just 104 in 23.4 overs with Shadab Khan taking four wickets and Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf claiming two each.

“When I went in, I played a couple of balls. The ball wasn’t coming on, pitch was two-paced. (Mohammad) Rizwan and I built the partnership and see what happened. Sometimes, Rizwan gave me confidence and vice-versa,” he said.

“When Iftikhar came, the tempo changed. He played well too. After two-three fours, he was comfortable, he smacked it after 40 overs.

“I’m satisfied. A couple of overs we were not up to the mark. Pacers did well, spinners struck too,” Babar added.
