Virat Kohli‘s supreme fitness was evident in his 47th ODI century while comeback man KL Rahul produced an equally engaging ton on comeback as India thrashed a listless Pakistan by record 228-run margin in a rain-marred Super Four game of the Asia Cup on Sunday. This is India’s biggest win in terms of runs against the cross-border neighbours. India posted an imposing 356 for 2, as Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls) and Rahul (111 not out off 106 balls), which was his sixth ODI hundred, pummelled a hapless Pakistan, whose chase ended at 128 for 8 as Kuldeep Yadav (5/25) scythed through them.

On the century count in ODIs, Kohli now stands just two behind Sachin Tendulkar‘s record 49.

Once India restarted the day from 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs, they needed Kohli and Rahul, the two overnight batters, to go big, and they did that in some style.

Along with Rahul, Kohli amassed 233 runs for the unbeaten third wicket stand – the highest ODI partnership for India against Pakistan.

En route to his 77th international century, Kohli also added some personal milestones to an already long list, becoming the fastest batsman to 13000 ODI runs and scoring his fourth ton in as many innings at the R Premadasa Stadium.

Kohli is only the second batter to achieve the feat of scoring four successive hundreds at a venue after South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who made this sequence at Centurion.

However, Rahul’s hundred was equally important from a team’s perspective.

Rahul, who was playing for India for the first time since earlier this March after an injury lay-off, batted for 141 minutes without any discomfort, and later kept wickets to underline his return to full fitness.

Beyond the cold realm of numbers, the knocks of Kohli and Rahul carried immeasurable aesthetic value.

The ball was coming onto the bat nicely, and Pakistan attack was also defanged in the absence of injured Haris Rauf, who had brought in a semblance of control the previous day with a quick spell.

Barring Naseem Shah, none of the other four Pakistan bowlers managed to even beat Kohli and Rahul, who batted with a lot of panache. Kohli took his time to get going, allowing Rahul to do the early running.

But once he went past 50, Kohli switched the gears seamlessly, as he often does.

The first indication of a transformed Kohli came when he caned pacer Faheem Ashraf through the covers for a four. Kohli brought his quick hands into play to pounce on a length ball on the off-stump, and from that point he seldom looked back.

His first fifty had come in 55 balls, and the remaining 72 runs cascaded in just 39 balls, as Pakistan bowlers were put through the wringer. Sensing the mood that Kohli was in, Rahul slightly took his feet off the pedal.

The 31-year-old knew a big score was there for the taking and he just needed to keep his focus right on the button.

Pakistan bowlers erred in length against Rahul, giving him enough space outside the off-stump and the Bangalore man exploited it to the hilt to get some easy boundaries.

Four of his 12 boundaries came between point and third man and he collected a total of 24 runs from that region, the most productive in his innings.

After allowing Rahul to soak in his hundred, Kohli too went past the mark with a single and celebrated his own moment with gusto – a jump and punch in the air. Kohli, perhaps, saved his best for the last.

In the 50th over, the former captain carted Ashraf for two overs, a paddle sweep and a strike over cover, and applied the finishing touches with a whistling six over long-on.

Indian bowlers did not have to do anything extraordinary as they were defending 357, and the highest-ever run chase at this venue was 292.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was bowling in an ODI for the first time since July 2022, gave India the perfect start, sending Imam-ul-Haq into the hands of Shubman Gill at second slip.

Hardik Pandya breached the defence of Pakistan captain Babar Azam with a delivery that shaped in just that bit.

Kuldeep, India’s best bowler in ODIs this year, hastened their fall as the left-arm wrist spinner bamboozled the Pakistan middle and late order with his endless variations.

The injured Rauf and Naseem Shah did not come out to bat as Indian bowlers were not even required to strive for 10 wickets.

Colombo witnessed heavy rain on Monday, the Reserve Day of India vs Pakistan Super 4 match© AFP

Ahead of the start of the Asia Cup Super Four clash between India and Pakistan at Colombo on the reserve day, there are some discouraging signs from the Island nation that have put the possibility of finishing the game under doubt. The electrifying match between India and Pakistan in the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 was been called off and moved for a reserve day as rain did not allow any play after 24.1 overs on Sunday. The play was halted for almost four hours today as the rain kept on coming back. India will resume their innings today at 147/2, with Virat Kohli (8*) and KL Rahul (17*) unbeaten. Skipper Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) had hit delightful fifties.

There was heavy rains in Colombo at 7 AM on the reserve day. The skies are extremely cloudy.

Moreover, the onfield faced immense damage as there were noticeable wet patches at the R Premadas Stadium, where the match is taking place. More rain will only make these patches worse, delay the game further or even cause an abandonment without any further action.

If this match is washed off, India and Pakistan will take one point each. Pakistan will move to the top of the Super Four standings with three points, having won against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka has already registered a win against Bangladesh too, worth two points, almost knocking them out of the competition.

In this case, India’s next two matches against Sri Lanka (September 12) and Bangladesh (September 15) will be must-win matches for India and reach a total of five points.

Losing even one of these matches or two more washouts will reduce India to just three points, which will put India’s qualifying chances in danger. It will be down to how the points table plays out for the rest of the teams due to their results, rain and net-run-rate if India is to qualify for the final with three points.

India vs Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka vs Pakistan and India vs Bangladesh are the remaining fixtures before the finals on September 17 in Colombo.

After the group match between India and Pakistan was washed out, intermittent rain pushed the Asia Cup Super 4 clash between the two teams to a reserve day on Sunday. India were 147 for two in 24.1 overs when heavy rain lashed the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The rain stopped after that but the resumption was delayed due to the wet outfield. A couple of wet patches on the ground was the main reason. The groundstaff even used fans to dry the areas apart from using sponges. However, before the game could resume heavy rain arrived again and forced the game to be moved to Monday.

While the reserve day was kept as insurance for the India vs Pakistan clash, the weather forecast isn’t painting a particularly rosy picture on Monday too. On the reserve day, play will resume at 3 pm IST. Before the match resumes, here is an hourly forecast of the Colombo weather –

At 2pm: Temperature – 27 degree Celsius, rain probability – 49 percent

At 3pm: Temperature – 28 degree Celsius, rain probability – 49 percent

At 4pm: Temperature – 28 degree Celsius, rain probability – 71 percent

At 5pm: Temperature – 27 degree Celsius, rain probability – 71 percent

At 6pm: Temperature – 28 degree Celsius, rain probability – 49 percent

At 7pm: Temperature – 27 degree Celsius, rain probability – 63 percent

At 8pm: Temperature – 27 degree Celsius, rain probability – 49 percent

At 9pm: Temperature – 28 degree Celsius, rain probability – 49 percent

At 10pm: Temperature – 27 degree Celsius, rain probability – 51 percent

At 11pm: Temperature – 27 degree Celsius, rain probability – 47 percent

The weather forecast has been taken from AccuWeather.

The activation of reserve day also means that in less than 24 hours of completion of the Pakistan game, India will meet Sri Lanka in their next Super Four encounter on Tuesday. Before the weather played spoilsport, Virat Kohli and K L Rahul were batting on 8 and 17 respectively after openers Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) struck fine half-centuries.

India’s Asia Cup opener against Pakistan was called off due to rain.

The weather has been a subject of intense debate through the Sri Lanka leg of Asia Cup. Rain is expected in the Sri Lankan capital throughout the tournament.

Asian Cricket Council’s decision to keep a reserve day only for Sunday’s game and the final also triggered a controversy.

The blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan was interrupted due to rain in Colombo on Sunday. This comes after Pakistan opted to bowl and India openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill did the damage with the bat in the first powerplay. Rohit (56) and Gill (58) slammed half-centuries before perishing in quick succession. India were 147/2 in 24.1 overs when rain halted the proceedings. KL Rahul, who replaced Shreyas Iyer in the XI, was unbeaten on 17 while Virat Kohli was batting on 8.

If no further action is possible on Sunday, the match will restart on Monday from the point it was suspended. For the record, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has announced a reserve day for the India vs Pakistan Super 4 clash.

“A reserve day has been incorporated for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4’s match between Pakistan and India scheduled to take place on 10th September 2023 at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo,” the ACC said in a statement.

“If adverse weather suspends play during the Pakistan vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended,” the statement added.

Notably, there will not be a reserve day for any of the other Super 4 matches in Sri Lanka.

Last week, the group stage match between India and Pakistan was called off after rain washed out the entire second innings.

The exemption, however, has been granted keeping in mind that the clash of arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, brings in a lot of revenue for broadcasters.

The weather forecast had earlier predicted that rain could play spoilsport on the match day, as well as the reserve day, with more than 90 per cent cloud cover’ along with some thunderstorms.

Shubman Gill was definitely at his best during the crucial Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against Pakistan at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday. The right-handed batter took a single off the first ball he faced but later on he went berserk and star Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi was at the receiving end. Gill hit a four off the second ball he faced in his innings and went on hit more two fours in the over that was bowled by Shaheen. However, that was not the end. When Shaheen came to bowl again, Gill smashed him for three fours — for the second time in the game — to make it another big over for India.

That forced Pakistan captain Babar Azam to remove Shaheen from the attack.

Soon after Gill’s show against the star bowler, the fans filled social media with a lot of memes trolling the left-arm Pakistan pacer Shaheen.

Watch some of the memes here:

Gill raced to his half-century in only 37 balls. It was his eighth fifty in the format.

Shaheen eventually got the wicket of Gill on the latter’s score of 58 off 52 balls.

KL Rahul made his return after being named in India’s playing XI for the blockbuster Asia Cup Super 4 clash against Pakistan. Rahul, who has been out of action since May 2023 due to a hamstring issue, replaced Shreyas Iyer in the playing XI, with Jasprit Bumrah also coming in place of Mohammed Shami.

This comes after reports emerged that Rahul will replace in-form wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan in the XI. Kishan scored 82 in the group stage match against Pakistan, which was washed out due to rain last week.

At the toss, Rohit confirmed both Rahul and Kishan will play against Pakistan.

“Looking to bat first. There will be a challenge upfront, but the way we guys batted last time around gives us confidence. Every game is important for us, but one thing at a time to focus on. (On rain delays) That’s the nature of the sport, it gave us good time to prepare and now we’ll look to play well. Two changes – Bumrah is back and one forced change, Shreyas Iyer just got a back spasm so KL Rahul comes in for him,” Rohit said at the toss.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failed to fire against Pakistan in the last match© AFP

As India gear up to ace the Pakistan test in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 clash on Sunday in Colombo, the team management has a big concern to handle. Historically, the venue hasn’t been as productive for Rohit Sharma, as he would’ve liked. Virat Kohli, in comparison, has done wonders at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. While getting the entire Indian team click as a unit will be key for the Indian team, the skipper’s performance against the mighty Pakistan bowling attack could lay the foundation of which way the fixture will turn.

Virat Kohli’s Record in Colombo:

Virat Kohli remains one of the finest run-getters in the history of the game and Colombo has been a happy hunting ground for him. Kohli has played eight ODIs so far at the venue and aggregated 519 runs at a Don Brandman-esque average of 103.80. He has scored a whopping three centuries so far in Colombo, with his highest score being 131. In fact, Virat’s last three innings scores in Colombo read, 110*, 131, 128*. All of these runs had come against Sri Lanka. Having failed to deliver against Pakistan in the group stage clash, Kohli would be keen to turn things around in the Super 4 clash.

Rohit Sharma’s Record in Colombo:

While Kohli has been in stunning form at the venue, Rohit Sharma’s record has been awful. The India skipper has also played nine ODIs in Colombo but managed to aggregate just 196 runs at a below-par average of 24.50. In these 9 games, Rohit has only scored one century. While Rohit’s record doesn’t speak in favour of Rohit, he had a phenomenal outing against Nepal in the last match. The message from the team management would be more of the same for the India captain.

The Indian team’s performances have been in focus for a long time, especially as critics look to judge what Rohit Sharma’s men are capable of in the ODI World Cup 2023. While many consider Pakistan the favourites to go the distance in the Asia Cup, how India fare against them in the Super 4 clash might just help the pundits gauge the true ability of the subcontinent giants.

Another India vs Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2023 is set to witness a stop-start campaign, with the rain threat looming large in the Super 4 clash. When the two teams squared off for the first time in the tournament, the match had to be abandoned without a ball being bowled in the second innings. However, even if no play is possible on Sunday, the match would not be abandoned, as the Asian Cricket Council has put in place a Reserve Day for the fixture.

As far as the weather updates go for the day, rain is predicted since morning. As the day progresses, however, the chances of rain increase. From 10 AM to 2 PM, the chances of rain remain under 50% in Colombo, as per Accuweather.

From 3 PM to 7 PM, the chances of rain vary between 49% and 66%. After the 7 PM mark, the chances of rain increase slightly to 69% but do not go beyond that mark, as per the weather website.

If the rain gods show mercy, play is likely to be possible in the match. But, the likelihood of a full 100-over contest at the moment, looks grim.

What happens if rain washes out the match on Sunday?

The Asian Cricket Council on Friday announced that the much-anticipated Indo-Pak clash could resume on Monday if the rain plays spoilsport on Sunday.

In an advisory, the ACC had on Friday stated that a reserve day was incorporated for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4’s match between Pakistan and India.

“If adverse weather suspends play during the Pakistan vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended,” the statement added “If adverse weather suspends play during the Pakistan vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended.

“In such an eventuality, ticket-holders are advised to hold on to their match tickets which will remain valid and will be utilised for the reserve day,” the advisory stated.

However, the other matches will not have a reserve day though rain is predicted in the Sri Lankan capital through the Super 4s.

The ‘Rain God’ had its say when the two teams initially clashed in the Asia Cup, resulting in a washout in their opening fixture at Pallekele on September 2.

Rain once again made an appearance during India’s first international match against Nepal at the same venue.

However, this time, the rain was less persistent, permitting a 23-over chase, which India successfully navigated to secure a Super Four berth.

Virat Kohli is definitely one of the greatest batters in world cricket. He has already stepped down as India captain but he continues to be a part of the team. Having a player like Virat Kohli in the squad can make any team look strong and force the opponents to take a back seat. Such is Virat Kohli’s supremacy that even during his lean patch, the opponents never take him lightly. Praises are nothing new for Virat Kohli, who currently sits at the second spot in the list of international hundreds, but a recent one from a Hollywood star is special.

The most recent praise for Kohli has come from Hollywood star Jack Black. He said that the right-handed batter is his “favourite cricket player of all time”. Black even went on to compare Virat Kohli with legendary American basketball player Michael Jordan.

“I have to say though that Virat Kohli is my favourite cricket player of all time. Of all the cricket players, he is definitely the most expressive and the most passionate. He is like the Michael Jordan of cricket,” said Black in a video that is going viral on social media.

Watch it here:

Virat Kohli is currently in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup 2023. He scored only four runs in the side’s campaign opener which was against Pakistan at the continental event.

The Indian team has started to prepare for its second match with Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 in the Super Four stage which will be played on Sunday in Colombo.

India had an intense practice session ahead of their clash with arch-rival Pakistan on Thursday. However, Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma took rest from the optional practice session.

KL Rahul who had missed the first India vs Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2023 after he picked up a niggle, joined the nets. He practised for both left-arm pacers and right-arm pacers, keeping in mind the quality bowling attack of the Pakistan side. He spent the longest time in the nets to be fully prepared for his comeback match.

Shubman Gill also faced a few balls in the nets with right-armers. He was mainly focusing on playing swing balls.

Indian head coach Rahul Dravid who earlier expressed the need for India to bat a little deeper, threw balls at Shardul Thakur to prepare him to bat in the end overs to bring depth to the batting order. Dravid was also seen having a chit-chat with Shardul Thakur about his batting during the nets session.
