New Delhi:

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu against the Agnipath scheme, alleging there is “discrimination” in the nature and extent of benefits given to the families of the soldiers killed in action.

Mr Gandhi said though it is a policy matter that falls in the domain of an elected government, an “exception is warranted in this case” as she is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and the issue affects national security.

In his two-page letter to the President of India, Mr Gandhi said he is writing to her with an appeal to provide ‘nyya’ (justice) to Agniveers, who lay down their lives in service to the nation.

“There can be no clearer illustration of the fundamental flaw in the Agnipath scheme – the creation of a ‘lesser’ cadre of soldiers who are expected to work on similar tasks with lower pay, benefits and prospects,” he said while sharing his letter to President Murmu on the scheme.

Mr Gandhi also referred to his recent meeting with the family of an Agniveer Ajay Kumar (23) in Ramgarh Sardaran village in Punjab, who gave the supreme sacrifice this January in a landmine blast near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district.

He said like every Indian, he was heartbroken by his martyrdom as Ajay’s promising life was tragically cut short at such a young age. He said he was also shocked to find his family living in abject poverty.

“Despite losing their son, they were proud of his sacrifice in service to the nation. However, they also described the shocking apathy and insensitivity displayed by the government in the aftermath of his death.

“Ajay’s family has received none of the lifetime benefits or social security that the families of regular soldiers receive. This means they will not get a pension, medical facilities, assistance for education, or preference in employment,” he said.

Mr Gandhi also said that despite Ajay’s dream to serve his country, his hard work and the highest sacrifice, his family is denied the respect and recognition that other soldiers get, only because he is an Agniveer.

“The tragic situation faced by Ajay’s family is the same injustice that thousands of Agniveers face today, and lakhs more will face in the future,” he said.

Poor families like Ajay’s are left with little respite despite their children’s ultimate sacrifice, he said.

“The discrimination in the nature and extent of benefits accorded to the families of our slain Agniveers, compared to regular soldiers warrants your urgent attention,” Mr Gandhi said in his letter.

“This anyaay – injustice – is why the Congress Party and our INDIA allies have strongly opposed the Agnipath scheme, and have promised to repeal it if we form the government,” the former Congress chief said.

In the letter, Mr Gandhi said, “I request you to intervene. I recognise that a President does not generally interfere in matters of policy, which are the domain of the elected government.

“However, I believe an exception is warranted in this case, given both the seriousness of this issue, and your unique position.

“You are the Supreme Commander of India’s Armed Forces. You have taken an oath to devote yourself to the well-being of the people of India.” “Is this discrimination against our Agniveer martyrs not a risk to our national security? Is it not a grave injustice to our youth who bravely risk their lives to serve?” Mr Gandhi asked in his letter.

“Do we not owe a duty to ensure the well-being of Ajay’s parents, his sisters, and other families like theirs,” he also asked.

“These pressing questions can only be answered in the affirmative.

“Therefore, I appeal to you to use your distinguished office to do nyaay – justice to Agniveer soldiers who lay down their lives, by ensuring that they receive the same benefits as any soldier who makes the highest sacrifice for our motherland,” he said.

The BJP will launch “Sewa Pakhwara” from today till October 2 to mark the PM’s birthday.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 73 on Sunday, with President Droupadi Murmu and other dignitaries and politicians extending their best wishes to him.

The BJP will also launch “Sewa Pakhwara” from today till October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, to reach out to different sections of society with a host of welfare initiatives to mark the birthday of its preeminent leader.

Extending best wishes, the President said she wished that PM Modi with his foresight and strong leadership pave the way for India’s development in every field during the ‘Amrit Kaal’.

Praising him as the architect of new India, Home Minister Amit Shah said he has laid a strong foundation of a grand and self-reliant India on the basis of the country’s ancient heritage.

“Be it the party organisation or the government, we always get inspiration of national interest being supreme from Modi ji,” he said, adding that he considered it his good fortune to serve the country under such a unique leader.

Wishing him, BJP president JP Nadda said the prime minister has given tangible shape to the Indian culture’s global prestige, people’s multi-dimensional development and the nation’s universal progress.

Our goal of “antyodaya” (uplift of the most downtrodden) has reached every village and every section of society and has become the mantra for the resolve of having a developed India, Mr Nadda said on X.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Modi has not given merely a new identity to India but also enhanced its prestige in the world.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the “architect of new India” and lauded his dedication and vision for building a “developed India.”

“Happy birthday to the great devotee of Maa Bharati, the architect of ‘New India’, the dreamer of ‘Developed India’, committed towards ‘One India – Best India’, the most popular politician of the world, the famous Prime Minister of the country Shri @narendramodi ji,” Yogi Adityanath said in a post on X in Hindi.

The prime minister has taken India’s development to new heights, he said, wishing him good health and long life.

The prime minister himself will be part of the launch of several development initiatives on his birthday. With ‘Vishwakarma Jayanti’ falling on Sunday as well, PM Modi will launch his government’s ambitious scheme, “PM Vishwakarma”, which is aimed at helping artisans and craftsmen and others engaged in traditional skills on the occasion.

As practitioners of these traditional occupations come largely from Other Backward Classes, the scheme with an outlay of Rs 13,000 crore is also being seen as the ruling BJP’s outreach to the politically important segment.

He is scheduled to inaugurate the first phase of the India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC), named Yashobhoomi, in Dwarka and also the extension of the Delhi Airport Metro Express line from Dwarka Sector 21 to a new metro station at Dwarka Sector 25 as well on Sunday.

The Indian government has not made any official statement on changing the name.

The buzz that started after the dinner invite to G20 leaders from President Droupadi Murmu used the term ‘President of Bharat’ instead of the traditional ‘President of India’ has now extended across the borders. A post on X (formerly Twitter) has quoted Pakistani local media reports to claim that the Islamic Republic might consider asserting lay claim to the name ‘India’.

A post shared by the South Asia Index’s X handle stated: “Pakistan may lay claim to the name “India” if India derecongnises it officially at UN level. –local media. Nationalists in Pakistan have long argued that Pakistan has rights to the name as it refers to the Indus region in Pakistan.”

However, there has been no official statement from the Indian government about any intention to change the country’s name.

The post got sharp reactions from social media users, with many of them calling it a joke. Others posted funny reactions.

“If Pakistan claims “India”, Afghanistan may claim Pakistan,” Russia may claim Afghanistan,” and so on. Pakistan should absolutely not start the chain reaction that will likely involve the entire world,” commented a user.

“Changing names won’t change the fortunes of Pakistan,” wrote another user.

“Does it mean Pakistanis want to change the name of Pakistan to India, Hindustan, Industan, or what?,” commented a third user.

Cricketer Virendra Sehwag, who yesterday gave his support to the name change idea, also quoted the post by the South Asia Index and wrote in Hindi, “Gaaon basa nahin aur… (the village is not even settled, and the robbers have already reached).

The official invite sent by President Droupadi Murmu generated significant attention because, for the first time, it referred to the head of state as the “President of Bharat” in an official capacity.
