India take on Sri Lanka in Sunday’s Asia Cup final, a crucial momentum-builder heading into next month’s ODI World Cup. Both teams have 13 Asian titles between them, with India winning on seven occasions. India kicked off their campaign with a washed-out match in Pallekele against Pakistan, before beating Nepal to qualify for the Super 4 stage. India then defeated both Pakistan and Sri Lanka, before being stunned by Bangladesh on Friday, in the absence of rested stars like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, among others.

Sri Lanka, who won the previous edition of the Asia Cup played in the T20 format, came in as underdogs defeated Pakistan in a do-or-die match on Thursday to set up a final date with India.

However, the focus will be on Colombo’s weather on Sunday. Several matches have been interrupted due to rain already, with one washout as well.

On two previous occasions, Sri Lanka have lost to India in the Super Four stage, only to beat them in the finals, in 2004 and 2008.

They now have a chance to equal India’s record of seven titles.

Asia Cup Highlights: India vs Pakistan Super 4 Match

Rain on Sunday forced a blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan into a reserve day after just 24.1 overs of play in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill impressed on Sunday after Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and elected to field at the R Premadasa Stadium.

India will resume on 147-2 on Monday in the 50-over contest after rain abruptly halted their innings following Pakistan’s decision to bowl first in Colombo.

Shaheen Afridi had troubled India’s top orders in recent encounters but Rohit Sharma and his team appeared to have found an antidote against the left-arm speedster.

Shubman Gill, particularly, took the sting out of Pakistan’s fiery pace attack when he combined with Rohit in a rollicking 122-run opening stand.

Colombo witnessed heavy rain on Monday, the Reserve Day of India vs Pakistan Super 4 match© AFP

Ahead of the start of the Asia Cup Super Four clash between India and Pakistan at Colombo on the reserve day, there are some discouraging signs from the Island nation that have put the possibility of finishing the game under doubt. The electrifying match between India and Pakistan in the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 was been called off and moved for a reserve day as rain did not allow any play after 24.1 overs on Sunday. The play was halted for almost four hours today as the rain kept on coming back. India will resume their innings today at 147/2, with Virat Kohli (8*) and KL Rahul (17*) unbeaten. Skipper Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) had hit delightful fifties.

There was heavy rains in Colombo at 7 AM on the reserve day. The skies are extremely cloudy.

Moreover, the onfield faced immense damage as there were noticeable wet patches at the R Premadas Stadium, where the match is taking place. More rain will only make these patches worse, delay the game further or even cause an abandonment without any further action.

If this match is washed off, India and Pakistan will take one point each. Pakistan will move to the top of the Super Four standings with three points, having won against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka has already registered a win against Bangladesh too, worth two points, almost knocking them out of the competition.

In this case, India’s next two matches against Sri Lanka (September 12) and Bangladesh (September 15) will be must-win matches for India and reach a total of five points.

Losing even one of these matches or two more washouts will reduce India to just three points, which will put India’s qualifying chances in danger. It will be down to how the points table plays out for the rest of the teams due to their results, rain and net-run-rate if India is to qualify for the final with three points.

India vs Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka vs Pakistan and India vs Bangladesh are the remaining fixtures before the finals on September 17 in Colombo.

Another India vs Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2023 is set to witness a stop-start campaign, with the rain threat looming large in the Super 4 clash. When the two teams squared off for the first time in the tournament, the match had to be abandoned without a ball being bowled in the second innings. However, even if no play is possible on Sunday, the match would not be abandoned, as the Asian Cricket Council has put in place a Reserve Day for the fixture.

As far as the weather updates go for the day, rain is predicted since morning. As the day progresses, however, the chances of rain increase. From 10 AM to 2 PM, the chances of rain remain under 50% in Colombo, as per Accuweather.

From 3 PM to 7 PM, the chances of rain vary between 49% and 66%. After the 7 PM mark, the chances of rain increase slightly to 69% but do not go beyond that mark, as per the weather website.

If the rain gods show mercy, play is likely to be possible in the match. But, the likelihood of a full 100-over contest at the moment, looks grim.

What happens if rain washes out the match on Sunday?

The Asian Cricket Council on Friday announced that the much-anticipated Indo-Pak clash could resume on Monday if the rain plays spoilsport on Sunday.

In an advisory, the ACC had on Friday stated that a reserve day was incorporated for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4’s match between Pakistan and India.

“If adverse weather suspends play during the Pakistan vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended,” the statement added “If adverse weather suspends play during the Pakistan vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended.

“In such an eventuality, ticket-holders are advised to hold on to their match tickets which will remain valid and will be utilised for the reserve day,” the advisory stated.

However, the other matches will not have a reserve day though rain is predicted in the Sri Lankan capital through the Super 4s.

The ‘Rain God’ had its say when the two teams initially clashed in the Asia Cup, resulting in a washout in their opening fixture at Pallekele on September 2.

Rain once again made an appearance during India’s first international match against Nepal at the same venue.

However, this time, the rain was less persistent, permitting a 23-over chase, which India successfully navigated to secure a Super Four berth.

India and Pakistan are set to face off in the Asia Cup for the second time in the ongoing edition on Sunday. Last week, the India vs Pakistan group stage match was washed out due to rain in Pallekele, with both teams sharing a point each. The focus will be on the rain gods as India and Pakistan square off once again, this time at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. On Friday, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) added a reserve day for the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan.

“A reserve day has been incorporated for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4’s match between India and Pakistan scheduled to take place on 10th September at Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. If adverse weather suspends play during the Pak vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended,” the ACC said in a statement.

As anticipation builds for the clash of the two Asia giants, weather conditions are casting a shadow over the fixture as the forecast predicts as rain could play spoilsport on both, the game day as well as the reserve day.

As per Weather.com, there is a 90-100 per cent chance of rain in Colombo on Sunday, with thunderstorms.

On the reserve day, there is a 90 per cent chance of rain, alongwith thunderstorms.

Accuweather also predicts high probablity of rain with 94 and 95 per cent cloud cover on Sunday and Monday, respectively.

“Cloudy with a couple of thunderstorms, especially late in the day,” the forecast read.

The India vs Pakistan match is the only one in the Super Four stage to have a reserve day.

However, the coaches of both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh — the other two teams in round two — have voiced their displeasure over the exemption granted by the ACC.

The exemption, however, has been granted keeping in mind that the clash of arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, brings in a lot of revenue for broadcasters.

Despite rain prediction of varying intensity over the next fortnight here, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials on Wednesday remained optimistic about keeping the R Premadasa Stadium ready for the Asia Cup Super 4 matches and the title clash. The Sri Lanka-leg of Super 4 stage will start with a match between the hosts and Bangladesh on September 9, followed by the much-awaited game between India and Pakistan on September 10. The final will be played on September 17.

“Yes, the predictions are for the rain. We had rains here this morning too, and it has made the wicket and areas near it a bit wet.

“The outfield too has soaked in a good amount of water. But we are working hard, and we are confident of preparing the ground in time for the matches,” said Godfrey Dabrera, the national curator of SLC.

There were speculations of Super 4 matches and final getting moved out of Colombo because of the inclement weather, before the Asian Cricket Council decided to stick with the original choice of venue.

Dabrera was confident that his team could handle the situations at any ground.

“All the three cities (Colombo, Pallekele and Hambantota) are experiencing rainfall. But we have assembled around 100 members, and we are readying pitches in all three venues,” Dabrera said.

“We have been told that the matches are here, so we are preparing accordingly. But I can say that all three venues can host matches, if a need arises,” he added.

Dabrera said he has visited all the three venues personally to oversee the preparations.

He said rain ahead of matches does not give them as much headache as showers during a match.

However, Dabrera said it would have helped him had the Met department given the forecast well in advance.

“Rain during the match is tough to manage as we have to wait till it subsides. But we can only do this much when the Met department provides only 12 days of forecast in advance.

“We have received the next 12 days of weather updates only today from them. Hope, we had that a few days ago,” he said.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is mulling a change in the venue for the Super Four matches of the Asia Cup in the wake of the heavy rains that have been lashing in Colombo. Five Super Four matches and the final have been scheduled in Colombo from September 9 onwards, but there are hardly any signs of the weather relenting. In that context, the ACC is currently engaged in a discussion with the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and tournament host Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about the possible change of venue.

The PTI has been informed that three venues are under consideration – Pallekele, Dambulla and Hambantota.

The six participating teams have also been intimated about the possible change in venue.

Pallekele is currently hosting the Asia Cup league matches, but the possibility of rain in this hill town is also on the higher side.

Dambulla is about 70 kilometers from Pallekele, and the chances of rain are much less in the former city.

However, a SLC official said the Rangiri International Cricket Stadium at Dambulla might not be ready to host so many matches at a short notice.

The weather in Hambantota is predicted to be the brightest in Sri Lanka at this moment, and the ACC is keenly evaluating the readiness of Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium to host the Asia Cup matches.

The ACC has another couple of days to take a final call, considering the Colombo leg starts only on September 9, but the Sri Lankan board did not want to leave the event to the mercy of elements.

It may be recalled that Sri Lanka has been drafted in as the Asia Cup co-host after the hybrid model proposed by then PCB chief Najam Sethi.

“The tournament will be hosted in a hybrid model with four matches being held in Pakistan, and the remaining nine matches being played in Sri Lanka,” the ACC had stated in June.
