New Delhi:

Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan has demanded an apology from Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar after a contentious session in the upper house of Parliament. The incident arose from a heated exchange involving remarks made by BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari against Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.

During a session where the Opposition MPs were vociferously demanding that Mr Tiwari’s comments be expunged from the record, Ms Bachchan voiced her objections to Mr Dhankhar’s conduct. She criticized the Chairman for his tone and his decision to switch off the microphone when Mallikarjun Kharge attempted to speak. Bachchan, clearly upset, asserted, “We are not school children and some of us are even senior citizens. I was upset with the tone… especially when the Leader of the Opposition (Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge) stood up to speak he (the Chair) switched the mic off. This is unacceptable.”

Mr Bachchan further condemned Dhankhar’s use of what she described as “unparliamentary” language, including terms like “nuisance” and “Buddhiheen” (which translates to “mindless”). “How can you do this? You have to allow the Leader of the Opposition to speak. If you are not going to allow that person to speak, if he is not going to be heard, then what are we doing here?” she argued. “The way things are being spoken in Parliament these days is unprecedented. I need an apology for saying ‘I don’t care’. He has to care… he is the Chair and he has to care.”

The Samajwadi Party MP was supported by several prominent women MPs, including Sonia Gandhi, who backed her claims against the Rajya Sabha Chairman. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi highlighted Ms Bachchan’s extensive experience, stating, “She comes with vastly more experience than the Vice President himself. He cannot disrespect a Member of Parliament.”

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Dola Sen also expressed support, noting, “She has not come here as a celebrity. She has come here as an elected Member of Parliament.”

After the fiery exchange opposition MPs led by Congress veteran Sonia Gandhi walked out to support Ms Bachchan, and underline their claims they were not being allowed to speak during House debates.

Opposition MPs – led by Sonia Gandhi and the Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien – then gathered outside Parliament, flanking Ms Bachchan in a significant statement, and several spoke on her behalf.

Ms Bachchan had prefaced her remarks (before she was cut short by Mr Dhankhar and told, repeatedly, to “take your seat”) by introducing herself as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” – a swipe at a related row with Mr Dhankhar that triggered sharp exchanges of its own earlier this week.

“Sir, I, Jaya Amitabh Bachchan (to chuckles from some benches), want to say this… I am an actor. I understand body language and expression (to applause) and, forgive me, but your tone is not acceptable. We are colleagues, sir… you may be sitting in the Chair but I remember when I went to school…” she said before Mr Dhankhar waved his hands and told her to sit down.

Highlights of Rahul Gandhi’s yesterday speech

India trapped in ‘chakravyuh’ represented by lotus symbol that PM Modi wears on his chest.

Budget has not addressed issue of tax terrorism that has hurt small businesses hard.

Paper leak biggest issue affecting youth, finance minister did not mention it in her speech.

Youth have been trapped in Agniveer ‘chakravyuh’, no provisions in budget for pension for Agniveers.

Atmosphere of fear in India, and that fear has pervaded every part of our country.

Legal guarantee for MSP in Budget would have helped farmers get out of ‘chakravyuh’, but government did nothing.

Budget has stabbed middle class which enthusiastically banged thalis when asked to do so by Prime Minister Modi.

Jaya Bachchan later addressed the deaths of three UPSC aspirants

Veteran actor and politician Jaya Bachchan took a strong objection after Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, Harivansh Narayan Singh, addressed her using her husband’s name yesterday.

“Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please,” Harivansh Narayan said – calling upon her to speak in the House.

” Jaya Bachchan respinded, “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata (It would’ve been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan).”

Harivansh Narayan Singh then pointed out that her name is officially registered as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan in Parliament’s records.

“Your full name was written here, I just repeated the same,” Mr Singh said.

“This is something new, that women will be recognised by the name of their husbands. They (women) have no existence or achievements of their own,” Ms Bachchan said.

Ms Bachchan later addressed the deaths of three UPSC aspirants at a Delhi’s coaching centre.

“It’s a very painful incident and we should not bring politics into the matter,” she said.

Three students drowned in the flooded basement of a coaching centre in east Delhi last week.

The incident has sparked a protest by students, who have blamed civic negligence for the incident. A political blame-game has also begun, with the BJP targeting the Aam Aadmi Party, which is in power in Delhi and also controls MCD.

Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty greeted PM Modi as he spoke about her speech

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today praised new Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty for her maiden speech in the House. Speaking during a discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s Address in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Ms Murty spoke about women’s health.

Quoting her father, she said when a mother dies it is counted as one death in the hospital but for the family, a mother is lost forever.

“I want to thank Sudha Murty for speaking in detail about women’s health,” PM Modi said as the philanthropist-author stood up and greeted him.

While referring to Ms Murty’s “emotional” remark on mothers, he said his government has focused on women’s health and sanitation as a “priority sector” in the last 10 years.

“Our country’s women have benefited from the toilets we have made,” PM Modi said while replying to a debate on a motion thanking President Droupadi Murmu for her address to the joint sitting of Parliament last week.

He also said they have provided sanitary pads and initiated a vaccination program during pregnancy for women.

Sudha Murty’s Maiden Speech In Rajya Sabha

Sudha Murty pressed for a government-sponsored vaccination programme to combat cervical cancer.

“There is a vaccination which is given to girls, between the age of nine to 14, known as a cervical vaccination. If the girls take that, it (cancer) can be avoided … we should promote vaccination for the benefit of our girls because prevention is better than cure,” she said in her first speech in Rajya Sabha.

ALSO READ | Over 3.4 Lakh Cervical Cancer Cases In India In 2023

The government has handled a very “big vaccination drive during Covid” so it may not be very difficult to provide cervical vaccination to girls in the age group of 9-14 years, she said.

Ms Murty, who was nominated by President Droupadi Murmu to the upper house on the eve of International Women’s Day, said the cervical vaccination has been developed in the West and has been used for the last 20 years.

“It worked very well. It is not expensive. Today it is Rs 1,400 for people like me who are in the field. If the government intervenes and negotiates…you can bring it to Rs 700-800. We have such a large population. It will be beneficial for our girls in the future,” she said during her 13-minute address.

Parliament session LIVE 2024: BJP has accused Mr Gandhi of labelling the Hindu community as violent.

New Delhi:
After Rahul Gandhi’s fiery speech in Parliament yesterday, in which he launched a scathing attack on BJP – large portions of which have been expunged from official records – the stage is set for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated response

Here are 10 points on this big story:

  1. Mr Gandhi’s fierce criticism in the House drew reactions from the treasury benches, including multiple interjections by Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

  2. The heated debate took place during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address to a joint session of Parliament. Mr Gandhi’s speech was not devoid of controversy, leading to portions being expunged from the official records.

  3. The BJP accused Mr Gandhi of labelling the entire Hindu community as violent, prompting calls for an apology from both Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah.  “This issue is very serious. Calling the entire Hindu community violent is a serious issue,” PM Modi said.

  4. Home Minister Shah demanded an apology from Mr Gandhi, accusing him of offending millions of Hindus and dismissing his right to speak on non-violence given the Congress’s historical actions during the Emergency and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

  5. The Congress leader accused the BJP of attacking the Constitution and misusing central agencies against him.

  6. Mr Gandhi’s speech also targeted several government policies, including the NEET-UG medical entrance exam, which he claimed disproportionately benefits wealthy students over meritorious ones. He criticised the Agniveer scheme, calling for greater respect and benefits for military personnel.

  7. Despite his sharp criticisms, Mr Gandhi concluded his speech with a call for unity and constructive dialogue. He urged the BJP to view the opposition not as adversaries but as partners in the nation-building process.

  8. The day’s debates extended into the Rajya Sabha, where Leader of Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s comments about PM Modi’s “divisive” campaign speeches also faced repeated objections from BJP members.

  9. Both parties conducted press conferences to present their narratives. BJP leaders, including Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Kiren Rijiju along with BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi, denounced Mr Gandhi’s remarks. Congress leaders held their own conference to criticise the ruling party further and defend Mr Gandhi’s statements.

  10. Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming address is expected to tackle the accusations head-on. PM Modi’s address will mark his first speech to the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) parliamentary party during this session, following his assumption of office for a third consecutive term.

Both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned on Friday till Monday.

New Delhi:
As Parliament reconvenes today, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are bracing for heated debates on pressing issues, including the NEET paper leak, inflation, and the Agnipath scheme.

Here are 10 points on this big story:

  1. The Lok Sabha’s proceedings were disrupted on Friday after Speaker Om Birla denied the Opposition’s request to prioritise a debate on the NEET paper leak before addressing the Motion of Thanks. This decision led to a deadlock, with Opposition members, led by Rahul Gandhi, insisting that the NEET issue warranted immediate discussion. As a result, the House was adjourned until Monday.

  2. “You can raise all matters in the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address. You will get enough time. But I can’t allow you to raise any other issue during the debate on the Motion of Thanks. It was already decided and mentioned in the bulletin too,” Speaker Om Birla told the Opposition.

  3. The NEET-UG examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 5, saw participation from around 24 lakh candidates. Allegations of question paper leaks surfaced in states like Bihar after the results were announced on June 4, prompting widespread protests.

  4. With the arrest of the principal of a private school in Gujarat’s Godhra yesterday, the CBI has so far arrested six individuals in its investigation into the alleged malpractices in conducting the NEET-UG exam.

  5. When the Lok Sabha resumes, BJP MP Anurag Thakur is expected to open the debate on the Motion of Thanks. The motion will be seconded by Bansuri Swaraj, a first-term Lok Sabha member and daughter of the late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj. The debate is scheduled to last 16 hours, concluding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply on Tuesday.

  6. Opposition MPs are expected to persist with their demands for a discussion on the NEET controversy, alongside raising concerns about inflation and unemployment.

  7.  In the Rajya Sabha, the situation mirrored the Lok Sabha’s tension. Protests erupted during Friday’s session, with Opposition members demanding a debate on the NEET issue. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge actively participated in the protest, joining colleagues in the Well of the House.

  8. The tumultuous session saw Congress MP Phulo Devi Netam faint due to high blood pressure while participating in the protests, necessitating her transfer to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

  9. Despite these interruptions, the Rajya Sabha allocated 21 hours for the debate on the Motion of Thanks, with Prime Minister Modi expected to respond on Wednesday.

  10. Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that the Leader of Opposition is the “strongest democratic tool” for India. “I assure you, I will raise your voice by raising your problems and issues with full force in the Parliament,” he said in a social media post.
