Ratan Tata will be cremated today with full state honours.

New Delhi:

Industrialist Ratan Tata, in an exclusive interview with NDTV in 2010, recalled an interesting conversation he had with a fellow billionaire. Mr Tata said the billionaire suggested he pay Rs 15 crore to a minister for an undisclosed business deal.

Mr Tata, of course, refused. The fellow industrialist then asked Mr Tata, “How do you avoid corruption?”

To which, Mr Tata replied, “It has to be self-regulating. You will never understand.”

Mr Tata died at the age of 86 in a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday. Mr Tata’s death marks the end of an era in Indian business, where a man reshaped the country’s industrial landscape and catapulted his family-owned conglomerate into a global powerhouse. His death has drawn an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the country.

“I want to go to bed at night feeling that I have not done it (corruption),” Mr Tata said.

Mr Tata will be cremated today with full state honours. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also announced a day of mourning to honour the legendary industrialist and philanthropist. The national flag will be flown at half-mast across government offices in Maharashtra as a mark of respect. Many events scheduled for Thursday have been cancelled.

Mr Tata’s body will be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai’s Nariman Point from 10 am to 4 pm today, where people can pay their last respects.

Ratan Tata was among India’s most respected industralists, who took the Tata Group to new heights

New Delhi:

As tributes poured in to honour legendary industrialist Ratan Tata, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai took to social media to remember his “business and philanthropic legacy”.

Recalling his interaction with Mr Tata, Mr Pichai said the Tata Group Chairman Emeritus “deeply cared about making India better”. He said they talked about Google’s autonomous driving technology Waymo and his vision was “inspiring to hear”. He added that the 86-year-old was ” instrumental in mentoring and developing the modern business leadership in India”.

Among other business leaders who remembered him were Chairman of the Mahindra Group Anand Mahindra and RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka.

Mr Tata, the former Tata Group chairman who transformed a staid group into India’s largest and most influential conglomerate, breathed his last at south Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital at 11.30 pm on Wednesday.

He was born on December 28, 1937 in Mumbai. Educated at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, the veteran industrialist worked on the shop floor at the family-run group after returning to India in 1962. He gained experience in several Tata Group firms before being named director in charge of one of them, the National Radio and Electronics Co. in 1971.

He became chairman of Tata Industries a decade later and in 1991 took over as the chairman of the Tata Group from his uncle, JRD, who had been in charge for more than half a century.

Under his stewardship, the conglomerate embarked on a massive expansion drive, snapping iconic British assets including steelmaker Corus and luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover. Its two-and-half-dozen listed firms now make coffee and cars, salt and software, steel and power, run airlines and introduced India’s first super app.

After his retirement in 2012, he was appointed Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons.

Mr Tata was the Chairman of Ratan Tata Trust and Dorabji Tata Trust, two of the largest private-sector-promoted philanthropic trusts in India.

He was honoured with the country’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.

Ratan Tata, the former Tata Group chairman who put the Indian conglomerate on the global stage with a string of high-profile acquisitions, has died, Tata Group said in a statement late on Wednesday night. He was 86.

Just two days ago, on Monday, the industrialist had in a social media post debunked the rumours circulating around his health, with a message for his followers: “Thank you for thinking of me”.

“I am aware of recent rumours circulating regarding my health and want to assure everyone that these claims are unfounded. I am currently undergoing medical check-ups due to my age and related medical conditions. I remain in good spirits…” Mr Tata had said in his social media post.

“I request the public and media refrain from spreading misinformation,” the 86-year-old had said in his last social media post.

Announcing the death, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, hailed the industrialist’s unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation.

“It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation,” said Mr Chandrasekaran.

“For the Tata Group, Mr. Tata was more than a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide and friend. He inspired by example. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global footprint while always remaining true to its moral compass,” he added.

Drawing on Mr Tata’s dedication to philanthropy, Mr Chandrasekaran, said “from education to healthcare, his initiatives have left a deep-rooted mark that will benefit generations to come”.

As news spread, tributes poured in from friends, fellow industrialist and film stars.

Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said he was unable to accept Tata’s absence and all that could be done now was to emulate his example.

Industrialist Gautam Adan said “legends like him never fade away”.

RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka hailed the industrialist as a “beacon of integrity”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the tycoon as a “compassionate soul” and said he “provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest business houses”.

“Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being. He provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses. At the same time, his contribution went far beyond the boardroom. He endeared,” the Prime Minister said in a series of posts on X.

Ratan Tata became chairman of the $100 billion steel-to-software conglomerate in 1991 and ran the group founded by his great-grandfather more than a hundred years ago until 2012.

He founded telecommunications company Tata Teleservices in 1996 and took IT company Tata Consultancy Services public in 2004.

Long after retirement, Mr Tata remained a popular figure on social media, with heartfelt posts about animal rights (particularly dogs) and appeals to Indian citizens.
