Mumbai:

Police in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district on Friday exhumed the body of a three-year-old girl whose death in an accident more than two weeks ago had not been reported to the authorities.

The driver of the dumper truck which allegedly crushed the girl to death at Malewadi in Sawantwadi tehsil was arrested for the accident as well as for destruction of evidence, said a police official.

The girl’s parents are migrant workers from Chhattisgarh.

After the accident on August 5, the driver, his assistant and the girl’s parents buried the body, the official said.

After getting a tip-off, district police started an inquiry and exhumed the body with a court’s permission.

Further probe was underway.

Siddharthnagar, UP:

A woman and her three-year-old daughter were killed when a speeding bus hit their motorcycle near Khira Mandi in Dumariyaganj in Siddharthnagar district in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Friday.

Prateek Giri from Tarhar village under the Trilokpur Police Station was riding his motorcycle with his sister Kiran Giri, 31, and his three-year-old niece, Siddhi, when the accident took place, said DSP Shohratgarh Sarvesh Singh.

“While they were en route to their village, a speeding unidentified bus struck their bike near Khira Mandi in Dumariyaganj. The bus driver fled the scene, leaving the woman and child dead. The bike rider, Prateek, survived the accident,” he added.

The police arrived at the scene, conducted a preliminary investigation and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination, Singh said.

A police team has been deployed to locate and apprehend the driver of the vehicle, he added.

District Magistrate Raja Ganpati R said the officials have been instructed to ensure that all necessary support is provided to the victim’s family.

Mumbai:

Four people were killed and several others were injured after a bus they were travelling in collided with a tractor and plunged into a ditch near the Mumbai Express highway on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, police said.

According to officials, all the injured were admitted to a nearby hospital.

“Four people died and several others were injured after a bus collided with a tractor and fell into a ditch near the Mumbai Express Highway. All the injured were admitted to the nearby MGM Hospital,” DCP Navi Mumbai Pankaj Dahane said.

Officials said that the bus, carrying devotees, was en route from Kesar village in Dombivli to Pandharpur in Maharashtra when the accident took place.

The incident halted vehicular movement on the Mumbai-Lonavala lane of the Mumbai Express highway.

The bus could be retrieved with the help of a crane and traffic on the lane was resumed after three hours.

Jaipur:

Four people were killed and three injured when a car collided with a truck on the Kishangarh-Bhilwara National Highway on Thursday, police said.

The car was returning to Jaipur from Chittorgarh.

Those dead in the incident include Dinesh (35), a resident of Sikar, his wife Sonu (32), his two-and-a-half-year-old son Bhanu and Sandeep’s friend Pradeep (25), Bijainagar SHO Karan Singh said.

The bodies have been kept in the mortuary and the injured are being treated in a hospital, he said

Mumbai:

Five women were killed and two others injured after a speeding truck ran over them in Maharashtra’s Solapur district on Tuesday, police said.

The accident occurred in Bandgarwadi village on the Pandharpur-Atpadi Road around 3.45 pm, an official said.

The victims, who were farm workers, were waiting for a state transport bus when a speeding truck rammed into them, he said.

Locals rushed to the scene after hearing the women’s screams and alerted the Sangola police station, the official said.

Five women died on the spot, while two victims, who were in critical condition, were referred to a hospital in Pandharpur, he said.

Locals thrashed the truck driver and handed him over to the police, the official said.

A huge crowd gathered at the scene, disrupting traffic on the road, he said.

Personnel from Sangola police station dispersed the crowd after assuring strict action against the driver, he said.

The truck driver was also admitted to hospital as he sustained injuries in the attack by locals, the official said, adding that a case will be registered against him.

Pune:

Days after the Pune Porsche incident in which two people were killed, a 28-year-old man in Pimpri Chinchwad of Pune district died on the spot after being hit by a speeding car.

The police later arrested the accused. The incident was caught on CCTV.

Pimpri Chinchwad Police, in a press statement, said that the incident occurred on May 27 at around 1.30 am on service road alongside the Pune-Bangalore highway in the Wakad area of Pimpari Chinchwad.

The 28-year-old Angad Giri was dashed by a speeding car while crossing the road which caused his death on the spot.

The whole incident was also caught on camera. Police have identified the car and its driver 20-year-old Vedant Rai and registered a case against him at Hinjewadi Police station under IPC sections of 304 (A), 338 ,337 ,270 along with Motor Vehicle act of 184 ,119 / 177.

The accused was arrested on May 28.

In the Porsche car incident, a minor ploughed his luxury car into the two IT professionals, who were travelling on a bike, killing them on the spot. Two young IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh, identified as Ashwini Koshta and Aneesh Awadhia, were killed in the accident on the night of May 19.

Keonjhar:

At least six people, including four women, died in a road accident when two trucks rammed into their car in Champua area of Odisha’s Keonjhar district on Wednesday evening, police said.

The incident took place on National Highway-520 near Rimuli bypass, they said.

All the six passengers onboard the car died on the spot, a police officer said.

The deceased were family members.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, he added.

Konaseema, Andhra Pradesh:

 Four people have been killed and several others were injured after a speeding bus rammed into a tractor in Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district.

The accident took place on Tuesday night near Udimudi village under P Gannavaram mandal in the district.

According to eyewitnesses, the Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus collided with a tractor carrying labourers, causing the fatalities.

The impact resulted in the death of three people on the spot, while one person died en route to the hospital.

The injured are being treated at Kothapeta Government Hospital.

“The deceased have been identified as Nookapalli Siva (35), Vasamsetti Surya Prakash (50), Veeri Katlayya (45), and Chilakalapudi Panda (age unknown),” police said.

New Delhi:

India saw a 12% rise in road accidents last year, showed a latest government report, with speeding being termed as one of the major causes behind accidents and deaths across the country.

As many as 4,61,312 road accidents were recorded in 2022 as compared to 4,12,432 in 2021, clocking an 11.9% rise, showed the report released by the transport ministry.

Last year, 1,68,491 people died and 4,43,366 people were injured in road accidents, a 9.4% rise in deaths and 15.3% in injuries over the previous year.

Besides speeding which led to over 3.3 lakh road mishaps in 2022, the report also attributed the accidents to rash driving, drink driving and traffic rule violations.

“In 2022, under the category of Traffic Rule Violations, over speeding is a major killer, accounting for 71.2 percent of the persons killed followed by driving on the wrong side (5.4 %),” the report said.

Over 10,000 accidents occurred due to driving under the influence of alcohol during this period, the data showed. A sharp increase was also recorded in accidents due to jumping red lights – from 2,203 in 2021 to 4,021 in 2022, an 82.55% rise over the year.

Over 50,000 people died in bike accidents in 2022 and were not wearing helmets. “During 2022, a total of 50,029 persons were killed who were not wearing helmet, of which 35,692 (71.3%) persons were drivers and 14,337 (28.7%) were passengers,” the report said.

As many as 16,715 people who were not wearing seat belts died in road accidents last year. This includes 8,384 drivers and 8,331 passengers.

Muzaffarnagar:

Two persons were killed and a 9-year-old girl was seriously injured when a motorbike rammed into a stationary truck on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in the Ratanpuri area here, police said on Tuesday.

Lakhan (28) and Tejvir (26) died in the accident that took place late Monday night when the victims were on their way to Hathras from Himachal Pradesh, Circle Officer Himanshu Gaurav said, The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, while the injured girl has been hospitalised, the CO said.
