After securing a victory over Morocco in the World Group II tie, Rohan Bopanna made an exit from the Davis Cup. Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri thrashed the pair of Elliot Benchetrit-Younes Lalami Laaroussi 6-2, 6-1 in the doubles match played at the Vijayant Khand Mini Stadium in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow on Sunday. Bopanna’s powerful forehands found no answer from the opposite camp. “Sad to be leaving the Davis Cup, but also simultaneously proud to have played for such a long time. I thank the entire nation for the support and all the teammates, the captain I have played under. It’s been a great journey, a great learning experience,” Bopanna said during the post-match press conference.

The 43-year-old, however, is happy that he will now get time to spend with his family. Speaking about the tie, he said, “It was extremely important for us to go to World Group I play-offs where India should be and work our way upwards.”

India’s non-playing captain Rohit Rajpal, who is also Executive Committee Member of the Indian Olympic Association, said Bopanna will be missed. “For any captain, when you have a player like Rohan Bopanna, a towering figure, there’s always a fight about who wants to play with him. All of them want to play doubles with him,” Rajpal commented.

“The whole team is under the shock of his decision not wanting to continue. But certainly, he’s passed on great knowledge to Yuki (Bhambri) and Ram (Ramanathan Ramkumar). We will continue to take his guidance and benefit from it,” he added.

Rajpal felt Indian doubles players have always left a legacy behind, but it’s the singles that needs to be the focus.

“We are a tough team and we put a lot of heart into the Davis Cup. When we are playing, we are a tough team to beat. At the same time, if we must beat top teams then we certainly need to have very good singles performances from our players, because there are four points for singles. We need to develop more depth in terms of our singles in the team,” the captain opined.

According to Bopanna, there are some talented players in the team to take it forward from here and he will always be around to help them. Bopanna believes exit from the Davis Cup is not the end of his career.

“Couple of days at home and I will be right back on the road. Tennis is a very busy schedule, coming from New York and then back to China so it’s a lot of travel. I am going on a high. With a week of practice before we go to Hangzhou [for the Asian Games],” he said.

With this victory, India will now play World Group I play-off in 2024.

Rohan Bopanna brought the curtains down on his Davis Cup career with a comfortable straight set win with Yuki Bhambri, a victory that put India ahead 2-1 in the World Group II tie against Morocco, on Sunday. The 43-year-old Bopanna, coming out to play his 33rd and final tie, and Bhambri raced to a 6-2 6-1 win over Elliot Benchetrit and Younes Lalami Laaroussi in one hour and 11 minutes at the Mini Stadium. Sumit Nagal now need to win against Yassine Dlimi to close the tie in India’s favour.

An emotional Bopanna rested his India-shirt on the court, marking the end of his Davis Cup career in which he played 33 ties, winning a total of 23 matches including 13 in doubles.

Watched by his family and friends, Bopanna acknowledged their and fans’ appreciation and blew kisses towards the stands.

About 50 of Bopanna’s family and friends flew to Lucknow to watch him one last time in Davis Cup.

They were wearing T-shirts that had a tri-colour-waving Bopanna picture printed.

Younes could not hold his serve even once in the match while the Indians faced just one break point when Bhambri served and saved that too.

The Indians drew the first blood when they broke Younes. On a Bhambri backhand return at 30-15, Younes netted the volley. Bhambri smashed a volley winner on Younes’ return to earn the first breakpoint.

Benchetrit went for an angled volley winner on a Bhambri return but the ball went out as Indians led 3-1. Bopanna came out serving the next game at love to make it 4-1.

Younes’ serve came under attack once again in game eight. Bopanna found a winner at 15-15 and the Morocco player served a double fault to be down by two break points.

Yuki converted the set point with a volley winner on a feeble Younes return. The first set ended in a jiffy, just 34 minutes as the Indians lost five point on their serve.

Bopanna’s big serve was at work in the second set too as he began the proceedings with a comfortable hold but Bhambri’s serve came under pressure in the third game when at 30-all, his half-volley pick up flew out of the court.

The Indians, though, saved the break point.

Younes was up 40-0 on his serve in game four but lost his way, serving double fault and making a lot of unforced errors to lose his serve for the third time in the match.

Bhambri served out the match.

Hauling itself up from World Group II should not be a complicated task for India when it takes on an unostentatious Morocco in the home tie, which will be more of a celebration of Rohan Bopanna’s Davis Cup career, which will come to a halt after 21 years on Sunday. Lack of singles players who could challenge the big boys of the ATP circuit, coupled with defeats in winnable matches, has hurt the Indian Davis Cup team badly in the last few years in this team tournament, but relegation to World Group II was a new low the Indian team hit in February.

It was for the first time since the new format was launched in 2019 that the Indians dropped to this level.

Much has changed since India last played in the Davis Cup tie in March, when it lost 2-3 to Denmark.

Indian tennis has hardly had any memorable moments this season until Bopanna reached the US Open final last week.

It’s not just the lack of on-court results in singles; off-court, the country also felt the disappointment of losing its only ATP 250 event.

Yuki Bhambri, one of the finest players India has seen, has stopped playing the singles format. Ramkumar Ramanathan has dropped out of even the top-550 and is languishing at number 570.

Such has been his plight this season that the Chennai player has made 17 first-round exits at different tournaments, including the lowest rung, the ITF Futures level.

It’s not surprising that skipper Rohit Rajpal has not included Ramkumar in the lineup, though he remains a part of the squad to help train the players.

AT 43, BOPANNA STILL PLAYING SOLID TENNIS

But Bopanna is still playing some solid tennis in the doubles format.

At 43, he still is one of the most powerful servers on the circuit. His strokes still have sting, and he can still pull off those stunning passing winners from difficult angles or while running on flanks.

It would have been ideal if he had got his farewell tie where he wanted — in Bengaluru — but he still has a chance to bid adieu to the Davis Cup before the home fans.

In 32 ties played since making his debut in 2002, the player from Coorg has won 22 matches, including 10 singles.

He will team up with Yuki for one final time in Davis Cup, even as he continues to play on the ATP circuit. Ranked inside the top-10, he has no reason to hang up his racquet.

The AITA felicitated Bopanna in a special event on Thursday night, where his contribution to Indian tennis was lauded. Bopanna will have a lot of friends and family members in the stands, which can accommodate about 1,300 people.

Ideally, as Bopanna had requested, his farewell tie should have been hosted in Benglauru, which has much better infrastructure and can accommodate 6,500 spectators.

SUMIT NAGAL IN GOOD TOUCH

India’s number one singles player, Sumit Nagal, is in good form. He is entering the tie after playing the final of a Challenger event in Austria. It was his third final of the season at that level. Unless there is an inexplicable meltdown, he would win two points for India.

Sasi Mukund will finally get to make his debut. He was named in the team even for the tie against Pakistan back in 2019 but pulled out, saying he had suffered a foot injury.

Digvijay Pratap Singh has also made the cut, and he might get to play a dead rubber.

Hot and humid conditions will pose a serious fitness test for both teams. Though the timings have been revised and the start of the matches has been delayed by two hours, it will still be a tough task to negate the energy-sapping conditions.

Morocco has only one worthy challenger for India’s singles players, Elliot Benchetrit.

The 24-year-old 6’4″ tall player might be ranked just 465 on the ATP singles chart as of today, but he touched a career-high 198 in February 2020.

Benchetrit has cherished wins against top-100 players, including one against a top-50 player, and has competed at the biggest stage — the Grand Slams — too.

Out of the two Indian singles players, Mukund has played and beaten him. They clashed in January 2022 at the Forli Challenger, where the Indian emerged victorious in two sets.

If at all there will be some fight, it will be against Benchetrit, who qualified for the US Open in 2019 and Australian Open in 2020, beating quality players such as Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland on the way. He had entered the French Open as a wild card in 2018 and took a set off Frenchman Gael Monfils before losing the opening round.

The visiting team’s second singles player is 20-year-old Yassine Dlimi, ranked 557. He is still plying his trade on the ITF Futures circuit.

Adam Moundir is further behind at 779, and the remaining two players — Walid Ahouda and Younes Lalami Laaroussi — do not figure even in the top-1000.

Given the weak opponents, winning this tie won’t be much of a challenge for India but chalking out a roadmap for the future will be.

SERIOUS SOUL-SEARCHING REQUIRED

Captain Rajpal and AITA officials need to sit and discuss what is wrong with the system that India does not have a single top-100 singles player, and the team is now fighting it out in World Group II.

There are a lot of questions that need answers and some serious soul searching.

Unless India have quality singles players, the country will not excel either in Davis Cup or Grand Slams.

Tennis remains an individual and professional sport but it’s time that AITA comes up with something special to save the game from plunging to new lows.

The ICC Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be held from October 5 to November 19 across 10 venues in India. After sharing the hosting rights in 1987, 1996 and 2011, India will solely host the World Cup this time around. Before the tournament kicks off next month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is leaving no stone unturned to give the fans the best possible experience. For this, the BCCI has launched a huge initiative by presenting ‘Golden Ticket’ to some prominent names. Earlier this week, legendary bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan became the first person to receive the special guest pass.

Few days later, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah also presented a “Golden Ticket to legendary batter Sachin Tendilkar.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, who was part of India’s first World Cup triumph in 1983, praised BCCI for the initiative, saying that it is a great way to hounour pioneers of their respective fields.

However, Gavaskar also wants BCCI to give Golden Ticket to ISRO chief, S. Somnath, under whom India landed on the moon.

Gavaskar also hoped that BCCI would honour two World Cup-winning captains, Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, while also naming other prominent athletes of their respective fields who have made the country proud in recent times.

“The decision by BCCI secretary Jay Shah to honour persons who have done yeoman service in their respective fields is a terrific one. As of writing, the one and only Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar have been given a golden ticket to witness the World Cup matches,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

“It is not known how many others are on the list, but hopefully, the chief of ISRO, under whom India landed on the moon, will be one. Obviously, it can’t be given to everybody who has played for India, but if the associations where the matches are being played are instructed to invite the Indian players from their city to the games in that city, it would be a magnificent gesture. Of course, two others who deserve the golden ticket are the two World Cup-winning captains, Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic and World Athletics Championship gold medallist, is another one who comes to mind for the BCCI golden ticket.”

“Whether these people can attend a match or not doesn’t matter. It’s the thought that will surely be appreciated by the recipients. It’s a great initiative that is seen at Wimbledon and the US Open Tennis, where current as well as former champions from other sports are special invitees to witness the tournaments. India has so many sporting heroes, and if they are also recognised with the golden ticket, the image of the BCCI will get really bright. Rohan Bopanna, who, at the age of 43, finished runner-up at the US Open recently, and Sharath (Kamal) who is a super legend in table tennis, are two other names. They may not be able to attend the games, but it’s the recognition that matters. Well done, BCCI,!” he added.

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden lost the US Open 2023 men’s doubles final against Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury but a moment of pure sportsmanship by the 43-year-old Indian tennis star have won a lot of hearts. Bopanna and Ebden won the first set 6-2 but ended up losing the second one 3-6. With the third set 4-2 in favour of his opponents, Ebden played a brilliant forehand winner. However, Bopanna approached the umpire right after the point and explained that the ball had touched his forearm on the way. It was a brilliant show of honesty by the veteran and the point was awarded to the opponent. After the match, Rajiv Ram appreciated the gesture by Bopanna during the match.

Rohan Bopanna’s agonising wait to win his maiden men’s doubles Grand Slam title continued as he lost the hard-fought US Open final with partner Matthew Ebden to defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury in New York on Friday.

Playing only his second men’s doubles final at a Major tournament, Bopanna and his Australian teammate lost the title clash 6-2 3-6 4-6 after two hours and one minute. Ram and Sailsbury became the first team to win three straight US Open titles.

Bopanna was playing the US Open final for the second time in his career and this time as the oldest player at 43.

He had finished a runner-up with his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi way back in 2010, losing the title clash to the legendary Bryan brothers.

Overall, it was third Grand Slam final for Bopanna, who won his first and only Major in 2017 when he lifted the French Open mixed doubles trophy with Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski.

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are only two male tennis players from India to have won Grand Slam titles.

Bopanna and Ebden got the start they wanted, breaking their rivals in the very first game. The Indian’s ferocious forehand was at work. He blasted a winner on a feeble return to earn three breakpoints.

Ram only helped them by fluffing an easy backhand volley on the first chance. Bopanna consolidated the lead with an easy hold.

The sixth seeds had a chance to go up 3-0 but could not convert the breakpoint when the Briton served at 30-40. The defending champions survived a few anxious moments but eventually got on board after playing three deuce points in that third game. Ebden’s volley winner on Salibury’s return earned them another breakpoint and they sealed that when the Briton could pick up a half-volley.

This put Bopanna and Ebden firmly in control of the contest as they were now leading the first set 5-2.

The Australian came out to serve out the set and delivered. Ebden landed his serves exactly where he wanted to go up 40-0 and Ram hit his forehand return long on the first set point.

Salisbury was feeling the heat. It was evident when he came out to serve in the second set.

The Briton served two double faults and was down a breakpoint when Bopanna found a screaming backhand passing winner at 30-all, running on his left but eventually the third seeds managed to hold the third game to stay alive in the match.

Soon it was Bopanna who was now struggling with his serve. He served a double fault and Ram’s strategy of firing deep returns unsettled the Indian a bit and it was enough to steal that crucial break that put the holders 4-2 up.

Having grown in confidence with that break of serve, Ram’s serve got better and Sailsbury’s ground strokes too improved along with movement on the court.

Ram sealed the set with an ace, forcing a decider.

Clearly, the momentum had shifted.

To make it even tougher for himself Bopanna was down 0-40 in the opening game of the final set but saved all breakpoints by reeling off five straight points for a tough hold.

Heart-stopping action followed in the fourth game when Salisbury staved off three breakpoints to stay on serve.

With two teams raising the level of the tennis being played, intense action was witnessed. Bopanna served a double fault at 30-all in the fifth game to be down by another breakpoint.

The Indian went for an all-out cross court forehand winner but missed the line by a very thin margin to hand a crucial break to the rival team that consolidated the break with an easy hold.

Down 2-4 in the final set, Bopanna showed exemplary sportsman spirit and character when he himself conceded a point after a ball deflected off his right arm when his serving partner made a forehand return.

It was considered a winner as the chair umpire could not notice the deflection but the Indian himself told the umpire that he was conceding the point. Ebden held the serve and so did Bopanna in the next game.

Ram came out to serve for the championship and there was no twist in the tale.

India’s doubles ace Rohan Bopanna, who is playing some of the best tennis of his career, became the oldest Grand Slam doubles finalist in the Open Era as he and his doubles partner Matthew Ebden reached the US Open final.  Producing outstanding tennis at the Flushing Meadows in front of a handsome Louis Armstrong crowd, Bopanna and Matthew Ebden defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in Thursday’s semifinals to set a summit clash against Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. In April 2021, Bopanna said he was wondering why he was still playing tennis. The Indian star had just lost a match in Estoril with Alexander Bublik. He had lost all seven matches he had played at the start of the season, winning only a single set.

“I was sitting near the ocean and I was telling myself, ‘What am I even doing? I’m not even winning matches, I have a family at home. Should I just call it a day and just go back?’. Our daughter was four years old right now and I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s do that,” Bopanna told ATPTour.com.

Instead, Bopanna continued on and is playing some of the best tennis of his career. Bopanna and Matthew Ebden will play Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury for the US Open title on Friday.

The Indian has won five ATP Masters 1000 titles with five different partners, although he has never won a major championship in men’s doubles. Not bad for someone whose knees lack cartilage.

“It’s worn out completely. It’s just worn out. It’s not a tear. Both my knees have no cartilage and in 2019 I was on two, or three painkillers a day. [In] 2020 I started Iyengar yoga, and that actually made a tremendous difference. I went from two, or three painkillers a day to no painkillers today. I think the only time sometimes I take an anti-inflammatory is from playing two matches a day. At that time the body says, ‘Hello, please slow down, you still have no cartilage,” Bopanna said.

When professional tennis was interrupted because of the Covid-19 outbreak, Bopanna developed an interest in Iyengar yoga. He worked out four times a week for 90 minutes.

“It really made the difference. I said ‘Okay’. Then when I started playing, I felt pain-free. And then that was a whole new ballgame,” Bopanna explained.

Today, the 24-time tour-level doubles titlist does a shorter period of yoga in the morning.

“I think the yoga kind of helped align the body better, helped the mind as well [stay] calmer.  And then having the right team, I’ve had Scott Davidoff travelling with me for 12, 13 years now and that has made a huge difference to understanding how I’m playing. I’ve invested in myself in terms of bringing a good physio on board this year. Last year, I didn’t have that,” Bopanna said.
