South Africa collapsed from a winning position to lose by 30 runs to West Indies in their T20 international on Sunday, with the Caribbean side taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. West Indies made 179 for six but the South Africans were well on their way to victory, reaching 129 for 3 with more than six overs remaining. The Proteas then proceeded to lose their last seven wickets for just 20 runs in 35 balls, finally ending up bowled out for 149.

Reeza Hendricks made 44 off 18 balls in a positive start to the run chase, but it was a day to remember for West Indies’ seamers at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy Stadium.

Romario Shepherd took 3-15 from his four overs, claiming the key wickets of Hendricks and skipper Aiden Markram (19).

Fellow pacer Shamar Joseph took 3-31 as he did the damage to the lower order.

Shai Hope had set the home side on their way to a good total with his 41 from 22 balls while skipper Rovman Powell‘s 35 and Sherfane Rutherford‘s 29 saw them through the final overs.

Powell was pleased with the way his team had turned the game around after the strong start from the tourists.

“We put the pressure after the powerplay. Wickets would bring us back in the game. T20 cricket can change very fast,” he said.

Markram said his experimental and youthful team would learn from the loss and seek to put it right in Tuesday’s final game.

“It’s tough to put a finger on the learnings right now but one thing guaranteed with us is a never-say-die attitude,” he said.

Toronto Nationals dominated with both bat and ball to dethrone defending champions Montreal Tigers by 8 wickets in an engrossing final to be crowned the winners of the fourth season of the Global T20 Canada on Sunday. Toronto Nationals thus clinched their maiden title in North America’s premier T20 competition. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also visited the Global T20 Canada venue during the league and met the management of Montreal Tigers, and then he was presented with a jersey.

Toronto skipper Colin Munro won the toss and saw his decision to field first vindicated in spectacular fashion as Montreal suffered a batting collapse to only manage a paltry total of 96/9 in their 20 overs.

Andries Gous then came up with a match-winning half-century to ensure a rather one-sided victory for Toronto Nationals. The innings was even more remarkable due to the fact that he had suffered a broken finger, a short while after arriving at the crease. But the USA international fought through the pain to remain unbeaten on 58 runs off 49 balls and ensure that Toronto Nationals secured victory in spectacular fashion.

The challenging batting conditions at the TD Stadium in Brampton were rendered even more difficult by a spell of heavy rain that delayed the toss by a couple of hours.

Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff made good use of the conditions to produce a superb display of swing bowling for remarkable figures of 3/8 in his four overs. That triggered a batting collapse in the Montreal top order and put Toronto firmly in the driver’s seat.

The Tigers suffered their first blow quite early with Toronto pacer Romario Shepherd sending opener Praveen Kumar back to the pavilion in the second over.

Montreal suffered a double blow in the very next over as Jason Behrendorff dismissed Gerhard Erasmus (2) and Tim Seifert (0) off consecutive deliveries.

Chris Lynn (3) did not stick around too long either as the Montreal skipper tried a wild slog off Behrendorff only to offer an easy top edge to Toronto wicketkeeper Unmukt Chand.

Sherfane Rutherford (1) went back almost as soon as he arrived, offering an easy catch off Junaid Siddiqui‘s bowling to leave the Tigers in deep trouble with half their batting line-up back in the dugout before the end of the power play.

However, Corbin Bosch (35) and Jaskaran Singh (16) got together to add 46 runs between them and ensure that the Tigers’ innings lasted the full 20 overs.

The Toronto chase was off to a poor start as skipper Colin Munro was trapped leg before for nought by Azmatullah Omarzai off the second ball of the opening over. Bosch bowled fellow opener Unmukt Chand (4) in the next over to raise hopes of a strong fightback by the Tigers.

However, if the Montreal fans were hoping for a turnaround by their team, Andries Gous and Rassie van der Dussen (30 not out) ensured that they would be severely disappointed with an unbeaten partnership of 85 runs that powered the Nationals over the line without any further hiccups.

Toronto Nationals’ Romario Shepherd was adjudged the bowler of the tournament for his 14 wickets while Brampton Wolves’ wicketkeeper-batter George Munsey was named the batter of the tournament for topping the charts with 218 runs.

Canadian youngster Dilpreet Bajwa, who represented the runners-up Montreal Tigers, was named the Emerging Player of the tournament, while Toronto Nationals’ UAE import Junaid Siddique was awarded the Player of the tournament.

Phil Salt in action for England in T20 World Cup 2024© AFP

England cricket team batter Phil Salt continued his tremendous run of form as he slammed West Indies bowler Romario Shepherd for 30 runs in an over to guide his side to victory in their T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match on Thursday. Chasing a target of 181, Salt provided the perfect start to the innings for England his unbeaten 87 proved to be deciding factor in the encounter. During the 16th over of the match, Salt, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, produced a display of sublime batting as he slammed Shepherd for 3 fours and 3 sixes to score 30 runs in just 6 balls.

Salt started the over with a boundary through extra cover to bring up his half-century and followed it up with a six straight down the ground. The next ball was a slower one but Salt read it early and slammed it for a four. The pressure was too much for Shepherd as he could not maintain his line and length.

A wide delivery outside the off-stump went for six over long-off while the fifth delivery of the over was once again a six as he sailed over backward square leg. The final ball of the over turned out to be a juicy full-toss and Salt needed no further invitation to slam it over the wide mid-off fielder for another four.

England went on to win the match by 2 wickets. After the match, England cricket team skipper Jos Buttler was all praise for Salt and his destructive batting in such an important match.

“That’s a really good performance from us, we executed well with both bat and ball. I thought we bowled really well to restrict such a powerful batting line-up, still we had to chase it down. but smart play from us. The partnership between Salt and Bairstow was great. I brought Jof back there, Pooran and Russell coming in, two of the best batters in the world, so we brought our best bowler back in. (On Adil Rashid) He’s a really important player, he has got so many variations and restricts runs. He batted at No. 4 today, he is a class player and we have decided to keep backing our class players. It was an incredible innings, a mature senior player’s innings, he batted with a lot of power. A lot of people say you learn when you lose but I also feel you learn when you win, important to reflect on our performance and look back what worked for us and focus on the next game,” Buttler said at the post-match presentation.

Ahead of the clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma had a hilarious moment with teammate Romario Shepherd when he came across a picture of himself at 20 years old, starting off for the Indian team. PBKS will lock horns with MI in the 33rd fixture of IPL 2024 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, on Thursday. Mumbai Indians took to social media platform X and posted a video with the caption, “Bholi si surat, aankhon mein masti… Jab Hitman met 20-year-old Ro today.”

In the video, Rohit reacted after seeing the picture of himself at 20 years old, saying that he was a small boy and was struggling to grow a beard.

The Hardik Pandya-led side is currently at the eighth spot in the IPL 2024 points table with just four points, having won only two out of their six matches in the ongoing season. The five-time champions have a net run rate of -0.234 in the 17th edition of the IPL.

Talking about the game against Chennai Super Kings, MI won the toss and put CSK to bat first.

After Ajinkya Rahane (5) and Rachin Ravindra (21 in 16 balls, with two fours and a six) did not make much impact, Gaikwad (69 in 40 balls, with five fours and five sixes) and Shivam Dube (66* in 38 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes) stitched a 90-run partnership. Later, MS Dhoni (20* in four balls) came during the final over and a hat-trick of sixes took CSK to 206/4 in 20 overs.

Hardik Pandya (2/43) was the pick of the bowlers for MI. Shreyas Gopal and Gerald Coetzee got a wicket each.

In the run-chase, MI was off to a fine start, with Ishan Kishan (23 in 15 balls, with three fours and a six) and Rohit having a 70-run partnership.

Rohit managed to score his second IPL ton, but did not get much support from the other end, except for another fifty-run stand with Tilak Varma (31 in 20 balls, with five fours). The Blue and Gold franchise ended with 186/6 on the board, losing by 20 runs.

Matheesha Pathirana (4/28) was the pick of the bowlers for CSK. Mustafizur Rahman and Tushar Deshpande also got a wicket.
