The India vs Afghanistan match was perfect for the Rohit Sharma-led team in many sense. The India skipper scored his seventh World Cup ton while Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets. It has set the Indian cricket team nicely for the mega clash against Pakistan on Saturday in Ahmedabad. However, one incident stood out during the course of the match, the image of which has gone viral on social media. Virat Kohli and Naveen ul Haq hugged out each other in a clear signal that all is well between them.

In the IPL 2023, during a match between Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore and Naveen Ul Haq’s Lucknow Super Giants, the two players were involved in an ugly spat.    But now things are normal. Th two again came face to face at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, where there is a stand named after Virat Kohli.

“An interesting development took place when Rohit Sharma was dismissed and Shreyas Iyer was coming out. This is what happened. Naveen-ul-Haq, and Virat Kohli shaking hands with each other. And this is good. The crowd loved it. You might have your things to say in the heat of the moment, but this is absolutely great to see,” Ravi Shastri, who was commentating during the match, said on Star Sports.

He followed that up with a witty remark. “Whatever happens, Naveen has to go back to the Virat Kohli pavilion,” he said.

On Wednesday, chants of ‘Kohli Kohli’ welcomed Naveen when he came into the bowl. During India’s chase of 273, the two players were seen enjoying a lighter movement. For Naveen, the matter never went beyond the boundary ropes.

“Crowd will chant for their home cricketers and that is what they did. It is his (Kohli’s) home ground. He is a nice guy, a good player and we shook hands.

“It (what happened) was always in the ground, it was nothing outside the ground. People make it big. They need that stuff for their followers. He said (today) ‘we are done with that and I said yes we are done with that. We shook hands and hugged,” Naveen said.

The 24-year-old has only played nine ODIs and he plans to retire from the format following the World Cup.

Talking about his retirement plans, Naveen said: “To be honest more international bowlers will opt out of ODI cricket because there is not much balance between bat and ball. I wish I would have played more ODI cricket but it is what it is.”

The India vs Afghanistan World Cup 2023 clash had an important sub-plot going on in the build-up of the game. It was Virat Kohli vs Naveen Ul Haq. The two has a sort of history. In an IPL 2023 match, Virat Kohli, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Naveen-ul-Haq, playing for Lucknow Super Giants, had a heated argument  in Lucknow. The spat was one of the most talked about incidents at the IPL 2023.

Wednesday’s match was the first time that the two came face to face again on a cricket field. Naveen was jeered by the crowd with ‘Kohli Kohli’ chants and a contest between the two was expected. Naveen Ul Haq bowled brilliantly to Kohli. But as far as any ugly spat is concerned, it was no where to be seen. In fact, the lasting image of the match would be when Virat Kohli and Naveen Ul Haq hugged each other. The images of the incident went viral immediately.

Meanwhile, captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday became the first Indian to score seven world cup hundreds, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during their clash against Afghanistan here.
While Tendulkar recorded six centuries in as many editions of World Cups that he played — 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011, Rohit achieved the feat in only three: 2015, 2019 and 2023.

Rohit also holds the record of scoring most centuries (five) by any batter in a World Cup edition — a feat that he achieved in 2019 in England.

Rohit’s ton against Afghanistan was his 31st overall, taking him past Australian legend Ricky Ponting. He is now behind India’s Virat Kohli (47) and Tendulkar (49) in the history of ODI cricket.

Rohit also broke Kapil Dev‘s (72) record of fastest ODI century for India in World Cup history, moving into triple figures off just 63 balls (12x4s, 4x6s).

In imperious form during India’s chase of 273 against Afghanistan, Rohit also went past West Indies’ Chris Gayle (553 sixes across formats) to record most sixes hit in international cricket across formats.

Rohit completed his half-century off just 30 balls — second fastest in the edition so far — while hitting three sixes and seven fours to make 60 unbeaten off 32 balls at the end of the eighth over.

Rohit unleashed his signature pull shot to hit Afghanistan bowler Naveen-Ul-Haq on the penultimate ball of the eighth over to overtake Gayle. Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi is third in the list with overall 476 sixes.

In the process, the Indian skipper also joined Australia’s David Warner in taking least number of innings (19) to complete 1,000 runs in World Cup history.

Among other Indians, Tendulkar (20) and Sourav Ganguly (21) feature among those with quickest to 1,000 runs in World Cups.

Cricket World Cup: “That Aggression…”: As Virat Kohli Faces Naveen-ul-Haq Again After IPL Spat, Afghanistan Captain Says This https://artifexnews.net/cricket-world-cup-that-aggression-virat-kohli-naveen-ul-haq-ipl-spat-revisited-by-afghanistan-captain-ahead-of-india-match-4468373/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 13:45:11 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/cricket-world-cup-that-aggression-virat-kohli-naveen-ul-haq-ipl-spat-revisited-by-afghanistan-captain-ahead-of-india-match-4468373/ Read More “Cricket World Cup: “That Aggression…”: As Virat Kohli Faces Naveen-ul-Haq Again After IPL Spat, Afghanistan Captain Says This” »

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team will play its second match of the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 against Afghanistan in New Delhi on Wednesday. After a win against Australia, with superlative performance from the bowlers, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, India would be pumped up to maintain the momentum against Afghanistan. The match is also likely to pit Virat Kohli against Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq. The two share a history after being involved in an ugly spat during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match earlier this year.

Virat Kohli, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Naveen-ul-Haz, playing for Lucknow Super Giants, had a heated argument during the match in Lucknow. The incident between the two again came up during the pre-match conference of the Cricket World CUp match.

After struggling against spin in their tournament opener, Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi on Tuesday said it was a one-off and his batters are well equipped to deal with the likes of Kuldeep Yadav and Co in the World Cup game against India here on Wednesday. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan had taken three wickets each as Afghanistan were bowled out for 156 in Dharamsala.

Afghanistan have world class spinners in their ranks with Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Zadran bowling in the nets regularly.

“We play better spinners in the net sessions. Like if you see Rashid, Nabi, Noor and Mujeeb, we play them every day. So, I think our team is far better in playing spin bowling.

“So that game you know we struggled but you can’t say that you are not good enough on one game. So that game is gone now and we know we can play spinners better and we will try to come back in next game in every department,” said Shahidi on the eve of the game.

The team’s trump card Rashid Khan went wicket less against Bangladesh as opposition batters chose to play safe against him.

Not taking too much risks against Rashid has been a trend but Shahidi said they are not too bothered about it.

“See, Rashid is the best bowler in ODI and T20s, so whatever opposition is doing, we don’t care about that, like how they play, they want to play Rashid, but for us the important thing is how he has planned against the opposition. So that matters for us.

“We are playing ODIs over the last six months so he knows how to bowl and he knows how to bowl to every team. He has the quality and whenever it’s his day he can do anything against the opposition, so we are expecting and we are hopeful that he delivers in tomorrow’s game.”

India used to be home base for Afghanistan for a long time. Their stars players are an integral part of the IPL and at times words will be exchanged on the field like it was the case between Naveen Ul Haq and Virat Kohli in the IPL earlier this year.

Asked about that incident, Shahidi added: “See, as you mentioned before also, like India is our home, it was our home, we played here and the people of India give a lot of love to Afghanistan people.

“And what happened in the ground, that aggression comes to every player, it’s not about India and Afghanistan. So, it can come to everyone. So, this happened and still like if you see a lot of our players, we have idols from Indian team like Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.”

The high-profile Mo Bobat, who was instrumental in England adopting a path-breaking approach in white-ball cricket as their Performance Director, on Friday joined Royal Challengers Bangalore as Director of Cricket ahead of IPL 2024. The highlight of Bobat’s tenure with the England men’s team was the Three Lions winning the 50-over World Cup in 2019 and the T20 World Cup in 2022. The 40-year-old had joined the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2011, and then gradually rose to the role of Performance Director in 2019.

At RCB, Bobat will step into the shoes of Mike Hesson, whose contract was not renewed by the RCB while snapping the ties with the Kiwi in July.

“It’s important to acknowledge the work of both Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar, for the stability and consistency they provided over recent years,” Bobat said in a statement issued by the RCB.

It will also be a reunion for Bobat with Andy Flower, with whom he had worked during the latter’s England stint.

Flower had recently taken over as RCB head coach replacing Bangar.

“I’m really looking forward to working closely with Andy Flower, somebody I know well, to take on the baton and deliver the success that RCB craves.

“Andy and I are relishing the challenges ahead, and we’re looking forward to helping Faf (Du Plessis) and the players to fulfil their potential,” Babat added.

Prathmesh Mishra, the Chairman of RCB, said Babat will oversee high-performance needs of the team, which is yet to win an IPL title in 15 seasons.

“With RCB, he will oversee all talent recruitment and performance plans, and will aim to establish the cultural and high-performance foundations for sustained success.

“Babat has already proved what he can do in a similar role with England, and I believe, with the expertise and years of experience, he will guide RCB to newer horizons and excellence,” said Mishra.
