Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami recently said in an interview that Pakistan should improve their selection process and not make it a family team that mainly operates on personal relations. However, the comments did not go down well with former Pakistan cricket team captain Salman Butt who believes that the comments were targeted towards Inzamam-ul-Haq – suggesting that he played a role in his nephew Imam-ul-Haq‘s selection during his time as chief selector. Butt added that the comments made by Shami were ‘wrong’ and even went on to say that it was a ‘dirty hit’ on Inzamam.

“Pakistan should not pick teams based on relations and friendships. Mohammed Shami’s comments were targeted towards Inzamam-ul-Haq. He targeted Inzamam by speaking about Pakistan picking their team based on personal relations, and I think this is wrong. This is wrong because if you look at Imam’s record, he came into the Pakistan team on the basis of his performance. He was also dropped when he failed. Shami’s remarks were below the belt and he shouldn’t have said such things,” he said on YouTube.

“Yes, there was a controversy, which should’ve been avoided. A lot of people made statements, Inzamam also said something, Rohit Sharma also clarified, and the topic was over. But to say things about selecting players just because they are relatives is a dirty hit. Such things don’t suit Mohammed Shami. He is a renowned bowler, like how Inzamam was a renowned captain,” Salman Butt added.

Earlier, during an episode of Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast on YouTube, Shami had an advice for Pakistan cricket team and its selectors.

“I don’t understand why people find it necessary to target others. Improve your selection, and send a good team, they can do it, the talent is there. Do one thing, make it a family team if you want to run the team based on personal relations,” he said.

Ever since Pakistan were awarded the right to host the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, a lot has been said and written about India’s participation in the tournament. Cricketing relations have not been ideal between India and Pakistan due to the political differences between the two countries. While Pakistan did travel to India for the ODI World Cup last year, reports have claimed that the Indian government is unlikely to give clearance to the team for travelling to Pakistan. However, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt feels its their right to host the Champions Trophy, adding that India must travel to the country just like the rest of the participating teams.

Butt also highlighted how India’s kabaddi and tennis teams have played tournaments in Pakistan in recent times, saying that the Indian government cannot pick and choose.

“Pakistan have got the rights to host the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and it should be held in Pakistan. Like all the other teams, India should also come to Pakistan. Pakistan went to India for the World Cup, so India should also do the same. A lot of things have been said about the relations between the two countries, but India’s kabaddi and tennis teams have visited the same Pakistan. Either you cut off completely, or you try to be normal everywhere. You can’t pick and choose, which they have been doing,” Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

On a lighter note, Butt suggested that cricket fans in Pakistan want to see the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play in their country, with the two India greats boasting a massive fanbase in Pakistan.

“Pakistani fans want to see the Indian players play here. There are many fans of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Pakistan and even bring their posters during PSL matches, despite knowing that they aren’t part of the league. People want to see these stars play in front of them. I am sure that even in India there are people who are fans of some Pakistani players,” he added.

There has been a lot of discussion over whether India will be travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. The two countries have not played a bilateral series for more than a decade due to political tensions but the Pakistan cricket team travelled to India in 2023 for the ODI World Cup. However, there has been no official communication from the Indian government or the BCCI when it comes to India’s possible visit to Pakistan for the competition. After India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said that their target is to win the World Test Championship and Champions Trophy next. However, he once again did not specify if India will be travelling to Pakistan in 2025.

Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt said that he has seen reports suggesting India will come to Pakistan but added that it is ICC’s duty to ensure that all teams play in Pakistan.

“We try sensationalizing everything. There have been a few reports suggesting that Jay Shah has given a positive signal. However, I don’t think he’s given any signals. I wouldn’t have been excited even if there had been a signal from him because it is the ICC’s duty to ensure that all teams visit Pakistan,” Salman Butt said on his YouTube channel.

Butt further said that if India decide to not travel to Pakistan, ICC will have deal with BCCI over the matter and this will be a good place to see if the governing body can deal with the Indian cricket board.

“If they come, then they welcome, if they don’t, the ICC has to deal with it. We will find out if they can just deal with all the other countries or can do the same with India as well. It will show how much authority they have as a regulator and how neutral they can be,” he added.

Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez recently opened up about his stint with the national side as team director and revealed that there were no fitness tests conducted in the team ahead of the Cricket World Cup 2023. During his appearance on the Club Praire Fire podcast with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan, Hafeez also said that the fat percentage had gone up in the players and they were not able to complete some of the fitness exercises. While the allegations did cause quite a stir among fans, former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt was not impressed. Butt said that Hafeez should not have said all this on an international standard and he should have taken steps to rectify the situation during his tenure.

“Maybe, he is saying as it is. But whose job was it to ensure that? You are complaining about your team’s matters on international platforms. You were team director. It was your job to pick the right people,” Butt said on a YouTube show, Cricket Baithak.

“You picked those people who, on their own, may never be there. You didn’t take fitness tests. Who stopped you? Or should I call it incompetence or lack of control? They were your juniors. You couldn’t take the tests?”

“You’re ranting to Adam (Gilchrist), ‘I wanted to do this and do that, but they didn’t listen to me. I was the team director’. For god’s sake, what were you trying to do? No one leaves their job until they’re sacked. Now, you go to an international platform and start complaining there. Why didn’t you say that when you were here?”

“Why didn’t you ask for more power and backing? I don’t know what to agree with or what not to. When someone else played Amir, he was a criminal. But it’s fine when you call him yourself,” he added.

Pakistan crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the group stage after losing to United States and India.

Disgraced former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt lashed out at the present Pakistan team after their loss to India at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Chasing a run-a-ball 120 on a tricky New York pitch, Babar Azam‘s side collapsed after the midway point in their innings, losing by six runs in the end. Now, Butt has joined in the criticism, particularly lambasting skipper Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Butt also accused the Pakistan players of running PR campaigns on social media.

In a video that went viral on X, Butt ridicules the ‘King’ moniker attached to Babar Azam.

“The self-proclamation that one man (Babar Azam) is the ‘King’, the other (Shaheen Afridi) is the best bowler in the world; one is compared to Virat Kohli, the other is compared to Jasprit Bumrah, but can they win matches on their own?” questioned Butt.

“Yes, they’ve touched the top of the ICC rankings at one point, but it’s time to touch reality now,” said a fuming Butt.

Butt said that any sort of narrative can be spread on social media, and hinted that the Pakistan team does so.

“The worst thing of social media nowadays it that you can run anything with a paid campaign,” said Butt. “It is necessary for the intelligent and important people in Pakistan cricket to stay away from such activities,” he said further.

“First win a match, a big tournament, fight it out to win against a big team, finish a match single-handedly, then think what you want to proclaim,” added Butt.

Pakistan now stand on the brink of a group stage elimination from the 2024 T20 World Cup. The men in green were first shocked by hosts USA, and then defeated for the sixth time in T20 World Cups by India, drawing in criticism from several former Pakistan cricketers, including Butt and Wasim Akram.

Despite beating Canada, Pakistan’s fortunes in the tournament are no longer in their hands.

Pakistan players hailed Rohit Sharma for his pull shots© Instagram

Captain Rohit Sharma rose to the occasion on Saturday as India mauled Pakistan by 7 wickets in their World Cup 2023 match in Ahmedabad. Chasing a target of 192, Rohit was on the attack from the very first bowl. Rohit scored 86 off just 63 balls, striking six sixes and as many fours, as India crossed the finishing line in 30.3 overs. The Pakistan pacers made the job easy for Rohit by bowling short-pitched deliveries as the Indian captain executed his pull-shot game to perfection.

Ahead of Saturday’s blockbuster match, the International Cricket Council (ICC) posted a video where the Pakistan players were asked to name a player who plays the best pull shots.

In the video, Haris Rauf, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali and Babar Azam all took Rohit’s name.

While pointing out the same video, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt tore into the players of failing to execute their plans, despite knowing that Rohit has the best range of pull shots under his sleeves.

“A few days back, the Pakistan players were asked ‘who plays the best pull shots?’ All five of them took Rohit Sharma’s name. I don’t know what the statisticians are doing. What are they telling the players. This is very weird that five players from the playing XI are saying that Rohit Sharma plays the pull shot efficiently, and you’re still allowing him to score runs off that,” Butt said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.

Rohit hit the ball to all parts of the ground with his delightful flicks and pulls to entertain an almost all-Indian crowd at the world’s biggest cricket stadium after Pakistan fans were effectively banned from attending.

He fell attempting another hit off Shaheen Shah Afridi to get caught at mid-wicket, but Iyer and KL Rahul took the team home with ease.

Asia Cup: Salman Butt said Jasprit Bumrah has “looked on a different level”.© AFP

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt feels that the Indian cricket team has ticked all the boxes after the Rohit Sharma-led side qualified for the Asia Cup 2023 final. With two wins in two days, against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Butt feels India have made their intentions clear ahead of this year’s World Cup. So far, the Indian batters have delivered the goods, while the bowlers have made a strong statement. Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul‘s return to action after injury has been huge positive for Rohit and his men.

Rahul scored an unbeaten century against Pakistan on his return to the side, while Bumrah, despite picking just three wickets, has troubled the opposition batters, especially with the new ball.

Butt feels Bumrah’s comeback has been exceptional, and said that the pacer has “looked on a different level”. He also praised spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who has picked nine wickets in two-matches, including a five-wicket haul against Pakistan.

“Jasprit Bumrah right now looks on a different level. Siraj has bowl well. Kuldeep is a special bowler. It is not easy check him, whether he’ll bowl a googly or his leg-spin. Most batters struggle to pick him up. Sometimes they are late on his bowling, that’s why it is not easy to hit him in the gap,” Butt said on his YouTube channel.

“So, a lot of positives for India so far in the Asia Cup. Batters have done their job. Injured players are back to full fitness. The top four has scored runs. Pandya has been bowling well, looks fitter. The world has witnessed Bumrah’s exceptional comeback. India have ticked all the boxes heading into the Asia Cup final and World Cup,” he added.

India will now take on either Pakistan or Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final on Sunday.

Star India batter Virat Kohli is one of the fittest cricketers in the world. Budding cricketers, not just in India, have looked up to Kohli for his work ethic and fitness. Ahead of Team India’s departure to Sri Lanka, the Indian players took Yo-Yo Tests, including Kohli, who managed a score of 17.2. However, reports have suggested that Shubman Gill was the fittest Indian player, achieving a score of 18.7 on the yo-yo test. Notably, the required threshold for Yo-Yo Test is 16.5, which was comfortably exceeded by all the Indian players who took part in the test.

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt, however, explained the reason behind Kohli’s latest Yo-Yo Test score.

Butt labelled Kohli as one of the fittest cricketers, adding that the 34-year-old wanted to preserve his energy for the rest of the camp, and decided not to push himself further.

“I’ll tell you one thing. When a player reaches a certain age and he knows what the required limit is, he would simply cross it and be done with it. In the Pakistan team, we were also taking part in these fitness tests. The youngsters had this craze of pushing the limits. The seniors, no matter how fit they are, just try to cross the benchmark and let it be. They don’t try to push further because it also creates unnecessary expectations,” Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

India and Pakistan will clash on Saturday, September 2 in Kandy in a Group A match of Asia Cup 2023.

On Wednesday, Pakistan got their Asia Cup campaign underway with a big win over Nepal.

The Asia Cup might be a continental tournament in cricket but it’s biggest point of attraction remains the India vs Pakistan contest. With the two teams set to face each other, potentially on three occasions, fans are understandably enthralled. In fact, the India vs Pakistan contest remains the most talked about subject of the event. While comparisons between the two teams have been coming thick and heavy, former Pakistan star Salman Butt doesn’t feel the Indian team is as prepared for the challenge his compatriots.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Butt hailed the clarity that Pakistan have in terms of squad selection whereas the topic is a lot more open for the Indian team. For Butt, India’s team is a lot more fragile, especially considering some of the star players have been injured for a long time.

“If we look at India’s fast bowling, fitness is a concern. Players have been unfit for a long time, we don’t know if they are fragile, will they go full throttle. Apart from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, they have youngsters, who have played plenty of cricket but they don’t have that much of experience.

“India have won matches only when Rohit Sharma has played well or Virat Kohli has done something spectacular. When the onus is on others they have mostly struggled,” he said.

While the Indian team has quite a few match-winners, Butt finds the batting unit ‘brittle’. In comparison to Pakistan, Butt also feels India don’t have the sort of express pacers that Babar Azam‘s side has.

“Pakistan have Babar, Rizwan, Fakhar, Shadab, Shaheen, Haris Rauf. And in my opinion, Pakistan have a much larger core group. India too have match-winners like Jadeja, Shami, Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli. But their batting is brittle, if Pakistan pick the two big wickets then the others will have a lot to prove. They have not helped India win matches against Pakistan or in their own,” the former Pakistan captain opined.

“We have bowlers who can bowl at 90mph, only one or two can touch 90mph, others don’t have that much pace. This is an added advantage. We have both types of spinners, fast bowling all-rounder, and he too touches 140kph,” he said.

Butt also took a swipe at the IPL, saying no matter how much the Indian players grind themselves in the T20 league, it doesn’t bring the sort of pressure that a match against Pakistan does.

“There are plenty of expectations from India, hence the pressure is more. And since India have not played against Pakistan for a long time for whatever reasons, their players no matter how much IPL they’ve played, they don’t have the experience of playing in such a high-voltage clash. Chahe subah, dopahar, sham IPL khel le (no matter how much you play in the IPL) it does not bring the same pressure, which is during India-Pakistan series,” he said.
