India cricketer Shardul Thakur has revealed many details about India’s victorious tour to Australia in 2020-21, stating that the team had not received good facilities from Cricket Australia. Terming the treatment towards them as “horrible”, Thakur stated that then-India captain Ajinkya Rahane and coach Ravi Shastri were regularly involved in arguments with Cricket Australia, as the team did not receive adequate facilities. Thakur revealed that several negative things were spoken about India, whilst going as far as calling then-Australia Test captain Tim Paine a liar.

In a public appearance, Shardul Thakur revealed his true feelings about the tour when asked what India’s famous win at The Gabba in Brisbane meant to him. India had won the four-match Test series 2-1.

“The way they treated us was very horrible,” said Thakur. “For four or five days, there would be no housekeeping service in the hotel. If you wanted to change the bedsheets, you would have to walk up five floors when you’re tired,” he continued.

Thakur revealed that the Governor of Queensland had said that Australia were not happy hosting India. Thakur then proceeded to rubbish an interview given by Tim Paine.

“I heard some interview from Tim Paine. That man was absolutely lying, he was just saving himself by making up things in the media,” said Thakur. “But I know the truth – Virat (Kohli) had left – and Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Shastri were regularly fighting with Cricket Australia to give us what we wanted,” he added.

Thakur said that the reaction of the Indian players after winning the match was different to what it would usually be. India had won the tour despite Virat Kohli missing the last three Tests and several injury concerns. In the last Test in Brisbane, India had chased down a mammoth target of 329.

“For the first time ever, we did not even look at the Australians after winning. We wanted to tell them ‘Go and sit back in your dressing rooms’,” Thakur said.

Shubman Gill focused on his short ball play as seven Indian cricketers sweated it out under the strong Lucknow sun, two days ahead of their Cricket World Cup 2023 fixture against England. Gill, who has amassed five hundreds this year, is yet to set the World Cup stage on fire after recovering from dengue that forced him to miss the first couple of games. In three games since then, the classy opener has scores 26, 53 and 16. With 1,325 runs and counting in ODIs this year, Gill has looked good in all the innings but has not been able to make it count. As India look to maintain their unbeaten run in the tournament, a special effort will be expected from Gill, who got out slashing at a short and wide ball against New Zealand in Dharamsala. However, facing the short ball is something that Gill relishes.

The others who attended the optional nets session were Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav. Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah stayed back in the team hotel after turning up on Thursday.

The team’s reserve opener Kishan too had a long hit. Like it was the case on Thursday, all the bowlers also spent a lot of time on their batting skills.

India have a long tail which has not been tested considering the stellar form of the specialists batters.

Shami, who took five wickets in his first game of the competition against New Zealand, batted after rolling his arm over while it was the other way around for Siraj.

Pacer Shardul Thakur and team’s premier spinner Kuldeep too used their willow in hot conditions.

Towards the end of the session, head coach Rahul Dravid had a rather long look at the red soil pitch.

A part of the square has been re-laid for the World Cup after Hardik Pandya called the surface for a T20 game against New Zealand earlier this year as a “shocker”.

The Indian cricket team made two changes in the line-up for the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand on Sunday. As India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss, he revealed that Mohammed Shami will be playing their maiden World Cup game in this campaign, while Suryakumar Yadav will make his debut in the ODI World Cup for the national team. Making way for the duo were Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur.

With the team management deciding to bench Shardul after Hardik’s injury, there will be no pace-bowling all-rounder in the team. In fact, the Indian team will enter the stadium with 5 bowling options. Considering the form that the Kiwi batters have shown in this tournament, the strategy could turn out to be a risky one.

“We’ll bowl first. No reason, we were here training yesterday and felt a bit of dew comes in. Looks like a good pitch, we’ll back ourselves to chase. Quite important to keep the momentum going, forget what happened in the past. Need to be at it all the time. This is one place everyone wants to come and play, with beautiful weather and a nice stadium. Hardik isn’t available, so does Shardul. We’ve got Shami and Surya,” Rohit said after winning the toss.

Tom Latham, New Zealand’s stand-in skipper for the match, said that he would’ve wanted to bowl first too.

“We’d have bowled first as well. Looks a good surface, and we know the dew will come in. The important thing is whatever we do, we need to do well. We need to keep the momentum going. We are in a new ground, new conditions so need to adjust to these conditions as quickly as we can. We’ve got the same team for today – three seamers and two spinners,” Latham said.

India Playing XI:Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj

New Zealand Playing XI:Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(w/c), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult

Former Indian cricket team opener Aakash Chopra believes that the injury to Hardik Pandya will hamper the balance of the team ahead of the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand on Sunday. Pandya suffered an injury during the match against Bangladesh and he was ruled out of the next match in Dharamsala. Chopra picked Suryakumar Yadav to replace Pandya and as a result, he believes that Shardul Thakur will be replaced by pacer Mohammed Shami to strengthen the bowling.

Hardik underwent scans following the injury in Pune on Thursday and is heading to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for his recovery.

India will play New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22.

“Team India vice-captain Hardik Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle while fielding off his own bowling during India’s match against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune,” said the BCCI in a statement.

“The all-rounder was taken for scans and is advised rest. He will be under the constant supervision of the BCCI Medical Team. He will not be taking the flight to Dharamsala with the team on 20th October and will now join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England,” the board added.

In all likelihood, KL Rahul will be Rohit Sharma‘s deputy for the New Zealand game. Rahul captained the side in the bilateral series against Australia in Rohit Sharma and Pandya’s absence.

India have a long gap between the Dharamsala and Lucknow game, which is scheduled for October 29.

The Indian will players get a short break after the New Zealand game and are expected reassemble in Lucknow on October 26.

Hardik lends a critical balance to the side and it remains to be seen, what combination the team goes with in his absence. In Hardik’s presence, India have the cushion of six bowling options and his finishing skills come in handy at number six.

Keeping the batting strength intact will be key and hence one among Suryakumar Yadav or Ishan Kishan is likely to figure in the playing XI.

Aakash Chopra’s picks for Indian cricket team playing XI against New Zealand in Cricket World Cup 2023:Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

Former Indian cricket team pacer Doda Ganesh launched a scathing attack on Shardul Thakur during the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday. In the absence of Hardik Pandya due to injury, Shardul bowled 9 overs and ended up conceding 59 runs at an economy rate of 6.60. The all-rounder took the wicket of Towhid Hridoy but Ganesh was not impressed with what he provided for the side. The former India cricketer took to social media to say that on the basis on just bowling, Shardul would not even make the cut for Karnataka’s playing XI in domestic cricket.

“With due respect to Shardul Thakur, on his bowling alone he would struggle to make it to Karnataka’s playing Xl in any format, let alone India’s,” he posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Shardul did not play the first game of the Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia but he replaced Ravichandran Ashwin for the second game and has played every match ever since.

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century sealed India’s fourth win from four World Cup matches as the hosts defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets on Thursday with the star batsman closing in on Sachin Tendulkar’s record for ODI hundreds.

Kohli reached his century and ended the match in style with a six against spinner Nasum Ahmed when he needed three runs to complete his century and India two more runs to reach a target of 257.

They got there with more than eight overs to spare, finishing on 261-3.

Kohli’s 48th one-day international century left him just one shy of equalling India great Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 hundreds at this level.

Kohli faced 97 balls, including six fours and four sixes, with this century his third score in excess of fifty in four innings following contributions of 85 and 55 not out in recent pool wins over Australia and Afghanistan.

But for Bangladesh, a third defeat in four matches left them with an uphill struggle to qualify for the semi-finals.

India vs Bangladesh, Cricket World Cup 2023: India and Bangladesh are set face each other at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune on October 18 in match No. 17 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Both sides enter the match with contrasting form, making hosts India as the favourites to emerge victorious. India surpassed the Pakistan challenge in their previous match by seven wickets in Ahmedabad. After restricting Pakistan to 191 runs in the first innings, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer’s half-centuries drove India to a victory comfortably. India are unbeaten in the tournament right now with three wins in three matches.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, began on a positive note by beating Afghanistan in their opening match. However, they suffered back-to-back defeats at the hands of England and New Zealand and are desperately looking to get back in form.

India and Bangladesh have squared off against each other in four ODI World Cup matches so far. Bangladesh defeated India in their meeting at the 2007 edition, while India went on to win the other three matches in 2011, 2015 and 2019.

Rohit Sharma vs Mustafizur Rahman

Rohit Sharma is India’s leading run-scorer in the ongoing tournament. He has scored 217 runs in three matches, which includes a century against Afghanistan. Rohit Sharma has also maintained an impressive strike rate of 141.83 in the tournament so far. He will have a crucial role to play in negating the threat of Mustafizur Rahman, who has an impressive record against India, with 25 wickets in 11 matches.

In the nine innings where Mustafizur has bowled to Rohit, the Indian batter has scored 129 runs in 122 deliveries, which also includes three dismissals.

Shubman Gill vs Taskin Ahmed

Shubman Gill is India’s leading run-scorer in ODI cricket and international cricket in 2023. He has scored 1,246 runs in 21 ODIs this year, which includes five centuries and five half-centuries. He was ruled out of the opening two matches for India, but returned in the third game against Pakistan. Against the new ball, he will have an interesting head-to-head against Bangladesh’s quick bowler Taskin Ahmed.

Taskin Ahmed has a terrific record against India, picking up 14 wickets in seven matches, which includes a five-wicket haul.

Virat Kohli vs Shakib Al Hasan

Virat Kohli is off to a good start in the tournament with two half-centuries against Australia and Afghanistan. He has a fantastic record against Bangladesh, scoring 807 runs at an average of 67.25, including four centuries. However, he has had a shaky record against Bangladesh’s star spinner Shakib Al Hasan.

In their head-to-head meetings, Shakib Al Hasan has dismissed Kohli five times in 11 innings. Kohli has managed to score 140 runs in 148 balls off the left-arm spinner so far in ODIs.

Shakib Al Hasan vs Ravindra Jadeja

Shakib Al Hasan will be a pivotal presence in the Bangladeshi batting order. The Bangladesh skipper has scored 751 runs against India at an average of 37.55, which includes nine half-centuries. He has scored 604 runs in 19 ODIs so far this year.

Shakib Al Hasan has had some trouble against India’s Ravindra Jadeja in the past, who dismissed the Bangladeshi all-rounder three times and conceded 87 runs in 107 balls.

Mushfiqur Rahim vs Shardul Thakur

Mushfiqur Rahim is Bangladesh’s in-form batter in the ongoing World Cup. He chipped in with a terrific 66 off 75 balls against New Zealand, which helped his side get to a respectable total. In 25 ODIs against India, he has scored 665 runs at an average of 31.66.

In the middle overs, he will be up against Shardul Thakur regularly and the Indian pacer has a knack of breaking partnerships regularly. He also has an impressive record against Bangladesh, picking up seven wickets in four matches. Although Thakur has not dismissed Rahim in ODIs, he bowled 22 deliveries and conceded only four runs to the Bangladesh batter.

The high-voltage ODI World Cup 2023 match between India and Pakistan is almost here and the fans are unable to hide their emotions about the highly-anticipated clash. Both the teams will be coming to this match after winning their first two matches in the tournament. Talking about Team India, the Rohit Sharma-led side first defeated Australia and then went on to register an eight-wicket win over Afghanistan. Ahead of the match against Pakistan, former Pakistan captain Aamer Sohail gave an interesting advice to Team India, which might benefit the visitors.

In a video posted on the YouTube channel of Cricket Pakistan, former pacer Mohammad Sami spoke about the inclusion of all-rounder Shardul Thakur in India’s Playing XI against Afghanistan, in the place of Ravichandran Ashwin. Sami stated that India should have opted for pacer Mohammed Shami instead of Shardul.

“This is why we are saying that India’s squad is very balanced. If you look at the wicket, it had a bit of grass. So I think, two spinners was the right call. So they made that change looking at the wicket. But I think, instead of Shardul Thakur, they should have gone with Mohammad Shami. He is an experienced bowler, bowls the yorker well, and has good defensive skills. So, I think Shami deserved to play instead of Thakur,” said Sami in a YouTube video uploaded by Cricket Pakistan.

Sohail joined the conversation and gave a hilarious response to Sami’s suggestion. “Shami ko Pakistan ke khilaaf na hi khilaye. Shardul ko hi khilaye. Khatarnak bowler hai.(Let’s hope they
don’t pick Shami against Pakistan. He is a dangerous bowler. Let them play Shardul only),” said Sohail.

Earlier on Friday, India skipper Rohit Sharma said that there is “99 per cent chance” of Shubman Gill playing against Pakistan in the much-anticipated Cricket World Cup 2023 clash.

Gill missed the first two matches of the Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia and Afghanistan due to illness as he was reportedly suffering from dengue. However, he travelled to Ahmedabad with the team and he even took part in a batting practice session on Thursday.

“99 per cent he (Gill) will play. We’ll see tomorrow (Saturday) about that,” Rohit said when asked about Gill’s health at the pre-match press conference.

Rohit Sharma is not averse to playing three spinners against Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium ground with big square boundaries. But, on the eve of the blockbuster Cricket World Cup 2023 face-off, the Indian cricket team captain was in two minds over whether to continue with Shardul Thakur or bring in his senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Asked if the track warrants playing three spinners, Rohit said: “I don’t know, honestly. If there is a change or two we need to make, we will be ready with that. And the guys have been informed very well in advance about these kind of changes. So, I don’t think it’s going to be any issues with the players. But if the requirement is there for us to play three spinners, we will play three spinners,” the skipper kept things pretty open-ended.”

During the last Cricket World Cup, he scored five hundreds and was the vice-captain of the side. As skipper in this edition of the tournament, he has created a world record of scoring seven hundreds in ODI World Cups.

What has changed in these four years? “Not a lot to be honest. I know what are the things that I need to do to find success on the field in terms of me as a player and then me as a captain.

“But speaking of just the player first, the batter, I think there are certain boxes for me that I have to tick before every game, just to get you that confidence.” For Rohit, preparation is very important.

“And I thought I’ve done everything that I can from my side to prepare well for each game. Because we know every day is a new day, fresh day. And you start your fresh day as a new challenge.” The past hardly matters and it is only the future that one should look at.

“You can take a bit of confidence from that, but like we know in sport, every day is a fresh day. You play different opposition. They bring you new challenges. And you just got to be ready to face that challenge, confront that challenge.” Minute understanding of his own game has been the biggest plus.

“I understood my game, what is my game, and what is the team’s requirement from my game and from my ability. So, I think I try and do all of that to the best of my ability. If it comes out, it comes out. If it doesn’t, it’s okay.

“As long as I know that before entering the game, I have ticked all the boxes, I’m happy with that.”

Matches against Pakistan carry their own set of pressures but Rohit doesn’t believe that he has to have a separate chat with his men before facing the traditional rivals.

“I have said this many times, that for us, tomorrow’s match is a match against the opposition. We will see that match the same way we have seen the last two matches and the upcoming matches. There is no need to think more or less.

“We will prepare the way we prepare for every game. And the message will be the same for all the boys. There is no need to do anything else.”

His idea is contrary to what the arch-rivals are doing at the moment with PCB management committee chairman Zaka Ashraf’s pep talk video ahead of the game indicating the immense pressure on the visitors.

Team India continued with their fiery performance and registered their second win in the ongoing ODI World Cup, with a eight-wicket win over Afghanistan. Opting to bat first, Afghanistan posted a total of 272/8 in 50 overs with Jasprit Bumrah taking a four-wicket haul. Later, skipper Rohit Sharma hammered a century as the hosts chased down the target in just 35 overs. Apart from such a brilliant chase, it was Shardul Thakur‘s fantastic catch which grabbed a lot of limelight.

In the 13th over of Afghanistan’s innings, Rahmanullah Gurbaz miscued his shot towards the deep backward square leg boundary off a short ball by Hardik Pandya. Shardul anticipated the catch brilliantly as he took it calmly, flicked the ball away as he crossed the boundary line and came back in time to complete it properly.

After the match, the entire Indian camp lauded Shardul for his brilliant catch and he was awarded a medal in the dressing room for breathtaking fielding. He was handed over the medal by none other than Virat Kohli, who himself had won the same award after the previous match against Australia.

“The catch was at a crucial period because Hardik took a chance bowling a bouncer and we needed a wicket at that stage. Very happy to convert the catch. I have been part of this team for a few years now and I know the boys really well,” said Shardul about the catch in a video posted by BCCI TV.

“I am comfortable in this dressing room and we have created an atmosphere where there is no such things as seniors and juniors. Everyone has gelled in so well that you don’t feel nervousness here,” he added.

Team India will now be squaring off against arch-rivals Pakistan in their next ODI World Cup 2023 clash on Saturday in Ahmedabad.

The Indian cricket team went into the Cricket World Cup 2023 with a few questions regarding their batting line-up with experts and fans wondering how they will manage the No. 4 conundrum. However, a match-winning knock by KL Rahul against Australia and Shreyas Iyer‘s return to form against Afghanistan has actually allayed fears and provided the hosts with somewhat of a concrete line-up. Ahead of a crucial match against Pakistan on October 14, that was good news for the fans but just as one question was answered, a new dilemma has reared its head. With Ravichandran Ashwin playing the first game in Chennai and then making way for Shardul Thakur in the next game at Hyderabad, a new question exists about the bowling team combination that can prove to be a major headache for selectors.

Pitch factor

Traditionally, the pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is considered to be a paradise for batters with a slight help for fast bowlers. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rashid Khan is a clear exception in a leading wicket-takers list that is dominated by the pace duo of Mohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami. While statistics can show just a portion of the entire story, it surely boosts Shardul’s case for selection. The fast bowler has enjoyed a tremendous run of form himself at the Narendra Modi Stadium and when it comes to T20Is at the venue, he is the most successful bowler in history.

Batting can be key

The other major advantage that Shardul has over Ashwin when it comes to the playing XI against Pakistan is the threat that he provides as a batter. In a pitch that is well known for providing able support to batters, the Indian cricket team may look to add more firepower in the batting lineup along with the two all-rounders – Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya.  While Ashwin is also a major asset when it comes to batting with the tail, Shardul has proved his mettle in the recent past and in comparison, his mix of fast bowling and batting prowess will certainly make him a favourite for the clash.

Experience holds the key?

While the scales are slightly tipped towards Shardul, the one thing that can never be discounted is the experience that Ashwin brings to the battle. The veteran is a classic comeback story as he made a surprise return in the Australia ODI series just ahead of the World Cup and even made it to the competition in place of the injured Axar Patel with the help of a decent showing. Ashwin has faced Pakistan 8 times in his career and has taken 10 wickets at an economy rate below 5, Ashwin was a part of the 2011 World Cup winning team and in a high-voltage game like India vs Pakistan, the veteran may hold the edge over Shardul if India look to bank on his knowledge in pressure situations.
