Shubman Gill is one of the finest and most complete batters in world cricket. Having made his India debut five years back, he has become a crucial member of the team’s batting unit. However, it is not only the batting that is impressive about Gill. The 24-year-old’s captaincy potential and the skill to deal with pressure have also earned him plaudits. Gill is the captain of IPL franchise Gujarat Titans while he also also led a young Indian team to a 4-1 win in the recently-concluded T20I series vs Zimabwe.

After the Zimbabwe series, Gill has been named vice-captain of the Indian cricket team for its upcoming tour to Sri Lanka. India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs in the outing.

Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour believes that Gill will lead the Indian team across all formats one day.

“Whatever I have seen him, be it for the Gujarat Titans or in Zimbabwe (when Gill led in a T20 series), he did a good job. He has shown terrific body language, which is a must if you are leading a side. Now with the vice-captaincy, the BCCI has given him extra responsibility and I am sure he will thrive in this role, ” Rathour told The Indian Express.

“I feel captaincy brought the best out of Virat and Rohit and I feel it will do the same for Shubman. Although, he is not yet the captain, being in the leadership group will bring the best out of him as well. This is I am very sure off. When you are in that role, leading others, it gives you that extra bit of responsibility, which is good and I think is great for a young kid like Shubman, who one day might lead India in all three formats,” says Rathour.

Hunger To Win, Adapting To Conditions Quickly Helped Us Bounce Back: Shubman Gill https://artifexnews.net/hunger-to-win-adapting-to-conditions-quickly-helped-us-bounce-back-shubman-gill-6105173/ Sun, 14 Jul 2024 16:33:01 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/hunger-to-win-adapting-to-conditions-quickly-helped-us-bounce-back-shubman-gill-6105173/ Read More “Hunger To Win, Adapting To Conditions Quickly Helped Us Bounce Back: Shubman Gill” »

The hunger to bounce back and adaptive skills helped Indian team pull itself up following the shocking loss in the series opener to win the remaining four matches against Zimbabwe, said skipper Shubman Gill in Harare on Sunday. India suffered an unexpected 13-run loss in the first game of the five-match series as the team fell short of chasing a modest 115-run total on July 6. But the visitors quickly put the disappointment on the back-burner to win the series 4-1.

“I think, the hunger that we showed after losing the first match was fantastic to watch. When we came here, not everyone had a lot of hits in the nets. We weren’t really used to the conditions. The way we adapted (was great),” said Gill following India’s 42-run win in the fifth and final T20I.

‘Player of the Series’ Washington Sundar said the pace and bounce of the pitch here took the Indian batters by surprise initially, which cost them the first match, adding that the series win had given the side a lot of confidence going into the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka.

India will play a six-match away series against the Islanders from July 27, which includes three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs.

“Good to finish with a win. I felt after the first game that the condition were very similar to South Africa, with extra speed and extra bounce. Lots of takeaways, lots of learnings, a lot of confidence going into the Sri Lanka series,” said Sundar.

Young Riyan Parag (22 runs), who was involved in a 65-run partnership with Sanju Samson when the chips were down on Sunday, said the series opener made the team introspect its strategy.

“After the first game everyone woke up, and it was a clinical performance. Enjoyed it to the max,” he noted.

Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team is all set to start its ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign on Sunday with a match against Australia in Chennai. As India start their quest for a World Cup title, the hosts will aim to put their best foot forward from the very beginning. India last won a World Cup in 2011. Since then, the side has won only one ICC title – the 2013 Champions Trophy. Before the Rohit Sharma and company start their campaign, let’s have a look at the list of records the players of the side can break during the mega event –

(World Cup Schedule | World Cup Points Table)

1 – Rohit is also in the run for breaking another record with the bat, as a ton more would make him the Indian with the most number of hundreds in the event’s history, going past Tendulkar (6).

3 – Indian skipper-cum-opener Rohit Sharma is just three maximums away from becoming the highest six-hitter in international cricket as he looks to go past legendary West Indian opener Chris Gayle (553).

665 – Young Indian opener Shubman Gill needs 665 runs more to become the highest run-scorer in an ODI calendar year, as he would go past former Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar (1,894).

13 – Indian seamer Mohammed Shami is 13 wickets away from becoming the highest Indian wicket-taker in World Cup history, as he would surpass Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath (44).

2 – If India manages to emerge victorious in terms of winning the title, it would become the first-ever side to win the tournament as a host consecutively, having won in 2011, the last time it hosted the competition.

Shubman Gill after scoring his century against Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match.© AFP

Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh has paised star batter Shubman Gill for the latter’s knock of 121 against Bangladesh in the Super 4 game of Asia Cup 2023 on Friday. However, he also pointed out that the shot to which Gill got out was a “bad” one. After getting hit for a six, Bangladesh spinner Mahedi Hasan tossed the ball up and away from Gill. The batter chased the ball and played a lofted shot on it, however, he failed to clear the long-off fielder.

India went on to lose the game by 6 runs as Axar Patel‘s late attack too failed to take the side home.

“Not enough today but all set for the finals,” wrote Gill on Instagram while uploading a picture of his celebrating the century.

“Bad shot to get out ! Could have won the game single handed ! But nonetheless we’ll played,” wrote Yuvraj in the comment section.

Gill gave an awesome display of his talent while registering his fifth ODI hundred, but Bangladesh managed to eke out an unexpected win over India in Colombo on Friday.

Gill’s 121 off 133 balls was exceptional. But it was not enough to drag India past Bangladesh’s 265 for 8, built around fifties by Shakib Al Hasan (80) and Towhid Hridoy (54) after they were put into bat.

India were bowled out for 259. Axar (42 off 34 balls) tried gamely to bring India back into the game with some heavy blows, but the target stayed just beyond India’s grasp.

But in the tournament’s context, the result did not matter as India had already entered the final. They will face Sri Lanka on Sunday. But the night belonged to Gill, despite the end result.

Gill’s batting is all about timing and minimalism. He pulls but not with the flourish of Rohit Sharma, and he drives but not with the flair of Virat Kohli. But Gill lends his own aesthetics and grace to his game.

India will be taking on Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2023 camaign opener on Saturday. This will be the first time that the two sides will be facing each other since their meeting in T20 World Cup last year. For the first time in several months, the Rohit Sharma-led side is having a full-strength team. The Indian team finished a camp on the outskirts of Bengaluru in Alur to prepare themselves ahead of the match against Pakistan. On the other hand, the Babar Azam-led side routed Nepal by 238 runs in the opening game of the continental event.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah have returned to the Indian setup while KL Rahul is set to miss first two games of Asia Cup.

Here what we think could be the playing XI of India vs Pakistan:

Rohit Sharma (Captain): The right-handed batter must be facing the challenge of settling himself down, especially against Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi. Rohit’s captaincy abilities are also going to be tested in such a high-voltage game.

Shubman Gill: The opener has failed to impress of late. His confidence and performance both have dipped after his glorious run in IPL 2023. India will be hoping for a comeback from the star in big game on Saturday.

Virat Kohli: The star batter is slowly and gradually getting back in his groove. His performance will have a big say in the result of the game against Pakistan.

Shreyas Iyer: The batter, who is coming back from injury, must be aiming for a good start on his return. Lack of match practice might be a concern for Iyer, but his experience holds a lot of importance.

Ishan Kishan (Wicketkeeper): Given that KL Rahul is unavailable for the game, Ishan Kishan will play as wicketkeeper in his place. The southpaw is coming on the back of three consecutive ODI fifties against West Indies.

Hardik Pandya (Vice-captain): He is the another key player for India. Hardik is among the rare all-rounders, who can bowl over 140 kmph. The star player has performed against Pakistan in the past as well and would aim to replicate it on Saturday.

Ravindra Jadeja: The presence of the player in the playing XI provides more balance to the team. Apart from playing crucial knocks, Jadeja is too good a bowler to face on turning tracks. Being economical more often than not is just another feature of Jadeja’s bowling.

Kuldeep Yadav: Of late, the left-arm wrist spinner has performed really well. He has been picking wickets consistently for India, providing crucial breakthroughs.

Jasprit Bumrah: The ace pacer of Indian cricket team is back. While playing against Ireland in his comeback match, Bumah looked good if not lethal. He will lead the Indian bowling attack and his performance will play a key role in the game.

Mohammed Siraj: The right-arm pacer has risen through the ranks over the past few years. Controlled aggression with continuously improving bowing quality makes Siraj a tough bowler for the opponents. He is likely to get a chance in the on Saturday.

Mohammed Shami: The right-arm pacer was rested during India’s series against West Indies and Ireland. He last played a game for India back in early June. However, his beautiful control over the ball makes him a special player. India will be needing Shami’s experience in the big game against Pakistan.
