The 2023 Cricket World Cup begins on Thursday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with last edition’s finalists — England and New Zealand — going head to head in the opening fixture. Fortunately for New Zealand, skipper Kane Williamson was declared fit to feature in the tournament and was selected in the 15-man roster, although he would not be available for the opener against England. But, there were many players who weren’t lucky enough to regain full fitness in time to be selected in their respective teams for the World Cup.

The likes of Rishabh Pant, Wanindu Hasaranga, Naseem Shah, Anrih Nortje, Tim Southee, etc. would’ve arguably gotten the nod for the showpiece event. But, their fitness came in their way of World Cup selection.

1. Rishabh Pant (India):Since his near-fatal car accident last year, Rishabh Pant hasn’t resumed cricketing action. The wicket-keeper batter is still working hard towards regaining full fitness and marking his return to competitive cricket.

2. Michael Bracewell (New Zealand):The New Zealand all-rounder injured himself in England’s domestic T20 tournament, and was ruled out of the World Cup. He ruptured his right Achilles while playing for Worcestershire will take a while to heal.

3. Naseem Shah (Pakistan):One of the most promising pacers in the world, Naseem Shah was ruled out of the World Cup just days before the tournament was to begin. He injured himself in the Asia Cup Super 4 clash against India and hasn’t recovered since.

4. Ashton Agar (Australia): A calf injury ruled Ashton Agar out of the World Cup for Australia. He sustained the injury before the start of the T20I series against South Africa. He did recover to play against India in the first ODI but injury issues saw him miss out on the next two games.

5. Ebadot Hossain (Bangladesh):An ACL injury saw the Bangladesh star being ruled out of the World Cup. Considering the extent of the injury, Ebadot will be out of action for a long time.

6. Anrich Nortje (South Africa):The express pacer will be a big miss for South Africa in the World Cup, especially because of his Indian Premier League experience. After he sustained a lower back injury, Lizard Williams replaced him in the squad.

7. Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka):A superstar for the Sri Lankan team, primarily with the ball, Hasaranga couldn’t participate in the ODI World Cup due to a hamstring injury he sustained during the Lankan Premier League. He didn’t feature in the Asia Cup 2023 for Sri Lanka.

8. Axar Patel (India):Once a part of India’s 15-man squad for the World Cup, Axar injured himself during the Asia Cup 2023 and hasn’t recovered since. He was replaced by Ravichandran Ashwin in India’s roster.

9. Sisanda Magala (South Africa):The South African speedster continued to have a problem with his right knee and was replaced by Andile Phehlukwayo in South Africa’s 15-member squad for World Cup 2023.

10. Dushmantha Chameera (Sri Lanka): Dushmantha Chameera sustained a pectoral muscle injury while playing in the Lanka Premier League in August. He hasn’t featured for the islanders since.

South Africa were dealt twins blows weeks ahead of the ODI Cricket World Cup after injured pacers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala have been ruled out of the tournament in India, head coach Rob Walter confirmed on Thursday. Bowling all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo and seamer Lizaad Williams have replaced the duo in the World Cup-bound squad. “It’s hugely disappointing for Anrich and Sisanda to be missing out on the 50-over Cricket World Cup. Both are quality players that add immense value to the Proteas,” Walter said.

“We sympathise in their omission and will continue to provide all the necessary support as they work towards their return to competitive action,” he added.

Nortje has a lower-back injury. The 29-year-old seamer experienced back spasms during the second ODI against Australia and underwent assessments and scans.

Magala, on the other hand, has a left-knee problem. Both Nortje and Magala were part of South Africa’s initial 15-member squad for the marquee event.

However with the South African team set to leave for India on Saturday, both players failed to recover in time for the Cricket World Cup, forcing the team management to name replacements.

“This provides an opportunity for Andile and Lizaad on the global stage. Both players have been part of our winter programs as well as having represented South Africa in the recent white-ball tour against Australia,” Walter said.

“They offer great skill sets and we’re excited to have them complete the 15-player squad for this year’s World Cup.” Nortje’s injury is a major blow for South Africa as he is one of the quickest bowlers in world cricket at the moment and has substantial experience playing in India. His express speed and ability to generate bounce makes him a valuable asset for the Proteas in all formats of the game.

Phehlukwayo is a like for like replacement for Magala. He showcased his batting prowess in the final ODI against Australia.

South Africa will begin their Cricket World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka in New Delhi on October 7.

South Africa’s updated squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen and Lizaad Williams. PTI APA SSC SSC

South African fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala’s availability for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India will be determined this week following a fitness test. The duo was named in South Africa’s initial 15-member squad for the World Cup, but played only one game each in the just-concluded five-match ODI series against Australia. While Nortje has sustained a lower-back injury, Magala is nursing a left-knee problem. South Africa is set to leave for India on September 23 and final call on the duo’s availability will be taken before the journey.

But going by early indication, both quicks are likely to miss the bus.

“We are continually taking stock as to where both of those players are,” South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter was quoted as saying by ‘ESPNcricinfo’ after the 3-2 series win over Australia.

“The fact that they weren’t playing today with a week to go before we board the plane for the World Cup is obviously a cause for concern. We would have wanted them out there. There are complications around taking players that are injured into a World Cup because then you have to provide a medical reason to be swapped out.” In case both Nortje and Magala are ruled out, South Africa is likely to call up Andile Phehlukwayo in the World Cup-bound squad.

“Andile is one of a couple of guys who are part of a broader squad and today he showed us, especially with the bat, what we have seen in terms of his capability,” Walter said.

“That knock, you can look at it, and say it was match influencing. A total of 270 looks different to a total of 315 and he was a massive role-player in that. He took an important wicket with the ball as well. I am very happy that Andile was able to deliver that performance today.”
