The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has welcomed cricket’s re-inclusion in the Olympics after more than a century.

“The BCCI has been a staunch supporter of the ICC’s efforts to include cricket as an Olympic sport. We are thrilled to witness this momentous occasion, which marks a significant milestone for the sport,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement on Monday.

“Our active participation has been instrumental in promoting the case for cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics.”

While the International Cricket Council has been pushing for cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics for a decade now, the BCCI, ever since Shah took over as the secretary four years ago, has given a much-needed push for the ‘Cricket in Olympics’ movement.

Shah was the chief of ICC’s working group that dealt with the International Olympic Committee before cricket was formally inducted into the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 on Monday. He was confident the decision would further expand the game’s horizon.

“The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is set to open new frontiers for the sport, providing unparalleled exposure in untapped global markets. Moreover, we anticipate that this decision will yield significant financial dividends and have a profound positive impact on our sport’s eco-system,” Shah said.

“It will fuel infrastructural development, intensify competition, foster youth development, and create opportunities for officials, volunteers, and skilled professionals.”

India’s Saurav Ghosal outclassed Henry Leung of Hong Kong in the men’s singles semifinals to remain firmly on course for a second gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games on Wednesday. Having played his part in the men’s team triumph, the world number 19 from India was far too good for the 52-ranked Henry and completed a dominating 11-2, 11-2, 11-6 victory in 33 minutes. India could end up with an unprecedented three gold medals from the squash courts with the mixed doubles duo of Dipika Pallikal and Harinderpal Sandhu also reaching the title clash, to be played on Thursday. Second seed Ghosal will meet top seed Eain Yow Ng in the final on Thursday. The Indian had beaten his Malaysian rival in four games in the team semifinals.

Having missed a golden chance to step on the top of the singles podium in 2014, the 37-year-Ghosal will be determined to end his sixth and probably last Asian Games on a high.

Though his Hong Kong opponent was much younger, Ghosal was superior on both tactical and physical side of the game.

Henry could do little about the boasts (shot that hits the side wall before hitting the front wall) that Ghosal would unleash out of nowhere to end the point in his favour.

His deft drop shots on the right side of the front wall also helped him gain a big lead in the first game.

In the second game, he complemented his boasts with drop shots on the left side of the front wall. Ghosal converted his first game point from 10-1 when his Hong Kong opponent hit his backhand on the tin.

With Henry leading 3-1 in the third game, a comeback looked likely but Ghosal was quick to cut the tiny lead before gaining an 8-5 advantage with a perfect placed boast. Ghosal’s forehand drop on the right was not retrieved by Henry, handing the Indian a convincing win.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Indian pairing of Dipika and Harinderpal won 7-11, 11-7, 11-9 against Hong Kong’s Lee Ka Yi and Wong Chi Him to make the final.

However, it was heartbreak for the second Indian pair of Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh as they lost to Aifa Binti Azman and Mohammad Syafiq Bin Mohd Kamal of Malaysia 11-8, 2-11, 9-11 in the other mixed doubles semi-final.

In a match that saw Anahat colliding with Azman, the Indians won the first game quite comfortably but lost their way in the second before the Malaysians emerged winners in the decisive tie, ensuring that it won’t be an all-India final in the mixed event.

Dipika, who is playing her last Asian Games, and Harinder lost the opening game of their semifinal to Yi and Him, but staged a remarkable comeback to claim the next two games after 38 minutes of intense squash.

While the Indians took just nine minutes to win the second game thanks to Harinder and Dipika’s excellent court coverage, the third game lasted 15 minutes as the pair from Hong Kong looked to stretch the decider.

Even as the Indians advanced to the final, there was a moment of concern for the team when the ball struck Harinder in the face after a shot from Lee.

“It’s good to have won. Every round is important. I feel like everyone has come prepared. We knew that we had to stick to our plan, play to the best of our ability and just forget about the results. The results will come,” Dipika said.

Indian women, men lose in Sepaktakraw

The Indian teams in Sepaktakraw started their campaign at the Asian Games on a disappointing note as the women faced two straight defeats and the men lost their opening match in Hangzhou on Sunday.

In the women’s quadrant preliminary Group B face-off, the women’s side lost to Laos 0-2 (14-21, 16-21) and then to China 0-2 (15-21, 14-21), both matches ending in 46 minutes.

In the men’s quadrant preliminary Group B match, the Indians lost to world number six Japan 0-2 (14-21, 16-21) in 50 minutes at the Jinhua Sports Centre Gymnasium.

The women’s side will be looking to register a win in their next game against the Philippines, while the men’s team will play against Singapore on Monday.

The top two teams from both groups will qualify for the semi-finals.

India has won only one medal so far in the sport at the Asian Games — a bronze in men’s regu at the 2018 edition in Jakarta.

The Indian team humbled defending champions Malaysia 2-0 to reach the final of the men’s squash event after the seasoned Saurav Ghosal and Abhay Singh registered identical wins at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Friday. India thus set up a marquee gold medal clash with Pakistan, against whom they lost in the pool stage and will seek revenge heading into the final. Abhay Singh started the proceedings for India on a positive note, securing a 3-1 (11-3 12-10 9-11 11-6) win over Muhammad Addeen Idrakie Bin Bahtiar in the opening match. He took 57 minutes to ward off the challenge of Bin Bahtiar.

The experienced Ghosal then got the better of Eain Yow NG 3-1 (11-8 11-6 12-10 11-3) in 69 minutes to wrap up the second semifinal in favour of India.

Mahesh Mangaonkar was not required to play his match against Mohammad Syafiq Bin Mohd Kamal.

The Indian men had settled for the bronze medal in the last edition of the Games in Indonesia.

Earlier, the Indian women’s squash team signed off with a bronze medal after going down fighting to Hong Kong in the semifinals of the continental showpiece.

Joshna was the only Indian who won her match as she defeated world number 24 Tze Lok Ho 3-2 (7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8) to level the tie after Tanvi went down meekly (3-0) to Sin Yuk Chan in the opener.

“Sometimes it’s just about hanging in there and fighting through. There were moments where that’s exactly what I did. I didn’t think too much about having a plan or a strategy. I knew today no matter what happens I had to keep fighting through,” Joshna said.

Playing against high-ranked and experienced opponent in Lee Ka Yi, the 15-year-old Anahat then tried her best but was undone by her inexperience.

The teenager saved eight match points as she went from 10-2 to 10-10 in the third game but eventually lost the final (0-3) 8-11, 7-11, 10-12 and the tie.

India had finished with a silver in the previous edition. They had lost to Hong Kong in the final at the 2018 Jakarta Games.

“It was 1-1 (in matches) and my match was a really important match, and if we had won that we would have gone to the finals. I feel like it could have gone better and I could have won it. They were really pushing me and hoping I would win the match and we would get a better medal,” Anahat said.

Joshna, who was a part of the silver winning side in 2018, was left a “little disappointed that they couldn’t get over the finish line”.

“We came in and we gave our best I’m just happy to have that fighting spirit on court. That’s who I am as a player.

“I was really happy I could play at a big stage for my country. Playing for India always brings out the best in me. I’m just glad I could do it today.”

Indian swimmers draw a blank from Asian Games

India’s Sajan Prakash and Advait Page finished fifth and seventh in their respective finals to draw curtains on the country’s swimming campaign at the Asian Games on Friday.

The gold in this event was won by Tomoru Honda of Japan with a Games record timing of 1:53.15s, while the silver and bronze were bagged by Chinese Taipei’s Kuan-Hung Wang (1:54.53s) and China’s Juner Chen (1:56.04s) In the men’s 200m backstroke final, Advait finished seventh with a timing of 2:02.67s. Page finished 7.30 seconds behind China’s Jiayu Xu (1:55.37s), who won the gold.

The silver and bronze in this event were won by Juho Lee of Korea (1:56.54s) and Japan’s Hidekazu Takehara (1:57.63s).

Returning to work after giving birth to a child is a difficult task but an increasing number of Indian athletes are now smashing stereotypes by continuing to compete. Perhaps the most well-known sporting moms in the country are legendary boxer Mary Kom and six-time Grand Slam winner Sania Mirza. Here’s a look at the Indian mothers who will be competing at the Hangzhou Asian Games beginning on September 23.

Dipika Pallikal (Squash)

The poster girl of Indian squash, Dipika Pallikal has been a consistent performer for the country. She paired up with Joshna Chinappa to win India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in squash in the Glasgow edition of CWG in 2014.

Her other accomplishments include several medals in World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, besides becoming the first Indian woman to be ranked in the top 10.

In October 2021, she and her husband Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik were blessed with twin boys — Kabir and Zian. A few months later, Dipika was back in the squash court and went on to win the mixed doubles bronze medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The Hangzhou Asian Games, where Dipika will compete in the mixed doubles event, are expected to be her swansong.

Koneru Humpy (Chess)

The Grandmaster is one of India’s finest chess players. She became the youngest woman ever to achieve the Grandmaster title at the age of 15 years, one month, 27 days in 2002, and became the second female to exceed the 2600 Elo rating mark.

She gave birth to her daughter Ahana in 2017 following which she took a maternity break.

Humpy returned two years later to become the women’s World Rapid champion in 2019 and was the runner-up in the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix 2019-21 edition.

The 36-year-old will be competing in the singles as well as team events in Hangzhou.

Harika Dronavalli (Chess)

The Indian Grandmaster is a three-time World Championship medallist.

The 32-year-old is an inspiration to women across the world. Harika played a high-pressure Chess Olympiad in her ninth month of pregnancy last year.

To prepare for the event, she would join her teammates online during the preparatory camps.

Alongside Koneru Humpy, R Vaishali, Tania Sachdev and Bhakti Kulkarni, Harika won the women’s team bronze in Chess Olympiad — the first-ever for India in the women’s section.

She was blessed with a daughter– Hanvika — a few days later.

She will be looking to add another Asian Games medal to her kitty, having won the bronze in the individual section at the 2010 Guangzhou Games.

Manpreet Kaur (Shot put)

Manpreet Kaur will be in action in the women’s shot put event. A national record holder, Kaur hails from Sahauli village in Patiala. She had represented India at the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. She then took a break of three years following her marriage and the birth of her daughter — Jasnoor.

She returned to the competitive arena in 2016 and became the only Indian woman to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics in her field.

Kaur was handed a four-year doping ban in July 2017. But she made strong comeback last year by hurling the iron ball to a distance of 18.06m to not only break her own national record but become the first Indian woman to cross 18m in shot put.
