The Aditya-L1 spacecraft is an unmanned observation satellite.

In a significant leap for the country’s space exploration endeavours, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday successfully launched its maiden solar mission, Aditya-L1, carrying seven payloads for a detailed study of the sun.

India’s first solar space observatory mission was launched on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) XL from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 11.50 am. The separation of Aditya-L1 and its injection into an elliptical orbit around the Earth were successful and took about 63 minutes.

Several politicians across party lines congratulated ISRO on the successful launch of the mission and its importance for science and humanity.

President Droupadi Murmu celebrated the significant milestone as a “historic feat,” underscoring its contribution to expanding our understanding of outer space. She conveyed her sincere congratulations to the dedicated ISRO scientists and engineers for their outstanding achievement and offered her utmost support for the mission’s prosperous outcome.

“The launch of Aditya-L1, India’s first solar mission, is a landmark achievement that takes India’s indigenous space programme to a new trajectory. It will help us better understand space and celestial phenomena. I congratulate the scientists and engineers at ISRO for this exceptional feat. My best wishes for the success of the mission,” President Murumu said.

Appreciating the hardworking scientists responsible for this extraordinary accomplishment in India’s space exploration journey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his confidence in India’s continued efforts to enhance our “understanding of the universe for the welfare of entire humanity.”

“After the success of Chandrayaan-3, India continues its space journey. Congratulations to our scientists and engineers at ISRO for the successful launch of India’s first Solar Mission, Aditya -L1. Our tireless scientific efforts will continue in order to develop a better understanding of the universe for the welfare of entire humanity,” PM Modi said.

The main opposition party in the Indian parliament, Congress, hailed the launch of Aditya-L1 as a “stupendous achievement” for India, as it shared a timeline of the mission from its conceptualization for understanding the “continuity in the ISRO saga”.

In a post in Hindi on X, the Congress said ISRO has given many opportunities to the country to be proud.

“After Chandrayaan-3, ISRO has again raised the nation’s prestige by successfully launching Aditya L-1,” the party said.

The entire Congress family is proud of this unprecedented achievement of the country’s scientists, it said.  Best wishes to the entire ISRO team, the party added.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Today’s launch of Aditya-L1 is another stupendous achievement of ISRO and for India!” “While saluting ISRO once again, it is worthwhile recalling the recent timeline for Aditya-L1 to understand the continuity in the ISRO saga,” he said.

According to ISRO, Aditya-L1 is the first space-based observatory to study the Sun. The spacecraft, after travelling about 1.5 million km from the Earth over 125 days, is expected to be placed in a Halo orbit around the Lagrangian point L1 which is considered closest to the Sun.

Aditya L1 shall be placed in a halo orbit around Lagrange point 1 of Sun-Earth system

New Delhi:

After the huge success India’s moon mission, Chandrayaan-3, the country is now gearing up for another one but this time to the Sun. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch its first space-based solar mission Aditya L1 on September 2 at 11.50 am from the Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh.

ISRO Chief S Somanath said the countdown for the Aditya-L1 launch will start today. “We are just getting ready for the launch. The rocket and satellite are ready. We completed the rehearsal for the launch,” he said.

ISRO on its official X account, previously known as Twitter said that countdown leading to the launch has commended.

Aditya L1 shall be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, which is about 1.5 million km from the Earth. A satellite placed in the halo orbit around the L1 point has the major advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without any occultation/eclipses.

This will provide a greater advantage of observing the solar activities and its effect on space weather in real time.

The suits of Aditya L1 payloads are expected to provide most crucial information to understand the problem of coronal heating, coronal mass ejection, pre-flare and flare activities and their characteristics, dynamics of space weather, propagation of particle and fields etc.

On August 23, India became the first country to safely land a craft in the moon’s south pole region. The mission is ongoing, with ISRO saying its rover had confirmed the presence of sulphur, iron, oxygen and other elements on the moon.

A mission to study the Sun, and launching a climate observation satellite, a test vehicle as part of Gaganyaan human space flight programme and an Indo-US synthetic aperture radar — ISRO has a packed schedule following the highly anticipated landing of Chandrayaan-3 Lander.

In addition, XPoSat (X-ray Polarimeter Satellite), the country’s first dedicated polarimetry mission to study various dynamics of bright astronomical X-ray sources in extreme conditions, is also ready for launch, an ISRO official said on Tuesday.

Aditya-L1, the first space-based Indian observatory to study the Sun, is getting ready for the launch, most likely in September first week.

According to ISRO Chairman, Somanath S, the space agency has also lined up the launch of a climate observation satellite INSAT-3DS.

The launch of a test vehicle mission, for the validation of the crew escape system for Gaganyaan, the country’s maiden human space flight mission, is also expected soon.

NISAR

“(Then) we have to launch NISAR, the India-U.S. built Synthetic Aperture Radar,” Mr. Somanath said in his independence day address at ISRO headquarters here on August 15. “So, our hands are full.”

“We are going to build a large number of satellites for our security purpose as well in the coming days,” Mr. Somanath had said.

According to ISRO officials, NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) observatory being jointly developed by U.S. space agency NASA and ISRO.

NISAR will map the entire globe in 12 days and provide spatially and temporally consistent data for understanding changes in Earth’s ecosystems, ice mass, vegetation biomass, sea level rise, ground water and natural hazards including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and landslides, they said.

“It carries L and S dual band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which operates with Sweep SAR technique to achieve large swath with high resolution data. The SAR payloads mounted on Integrated Radar Instrument Structure (IRIS) and the spacecraft bus are together called an observatory”, an ISRO official noted.

Unmanned missions ahead of Gaganyaan

Before undertaking the Gaganyaan human space (manned) flight mission, ISRO has planned two unmanned missions.

“We are getting ready for the (first of the two) unmanned crew module mission by the beginning of next year”, an ISRO official said.

The objective of the Gaganyaan mission is to demonstrate the capability of conducting human space flight mission to LEO on-board Indian Launch vehicle. The Orbital module consists of a Crew module and a Service module.

Crew module, which is a pressurised module, acts as living quarters for the crew. The orbital module will be positioned in approximately 400 km circular orbit around earth for one to 3 days and the crew module will return at the designated location at sea.
