Shubman Gill, India’s vice-captain in white-ball formats, on Thursday lauded new head coach Gautam Gambhir for his clarity of thought, while hoping to establish himself as an all-format player in the coming months. Gill will be the deputy to Suryakumar Yadav in the shortest format while he will be the second-in-command to Rohit Sharma in the ODIs during India’s trip to Sri Lanka, beginning with the first T20I at Pallekele, Sri Lanka on Saturday. This is Gambhir’s debut tour as India coach after he replaced Rahul Dravid, who vacated the seat after India’s T20 World Cup triumph in the America’s last month.

“We are the world champions and we will look to play accordingly, and, hopefully, we will have more success under the new coaching staff. This is the first time I am working with him (Gambhir),” Gill told the media during a press-meet at Pallekele, Sri Lanka.

“But during those two net sessions, his intent and communication have been very clear. He is very clear about which player he wants to work with at a particular time and on which areas he wants to work with him,” he added.

While his eventual goal is to bring more success to the team, Gill also wanted to firmly establish himself as an all-format batsman across the conditions.

Though Gill was a travelling reserve with Team India during the T20 World Cup, he could not find a place in the 15, and the right-hander identified that as the first point of correction.

“During the matches before the T20 World Cup, I could not perform to the level that I was expecting from myself.

“In the upcoming cycle where we will play 30-40 T20Is, I will try to improve my performance as a batsman,” he said.

But the 24-year-old has set his eyes on the five-match Test tour to Australia later in the year and on the subsequent Champions Trophy.

“We are playing some 10 (Test) matches before January, and I am looking forward to it, especially five of them in Australia. After that we are playing the Champions Trophy which would be really exciting.

“But these six matches (3 T20Is and 3 ODIs against SL) are very crucial riding into the Test matches,” he said.

So, does getting appointed as the vice-captain in the limited-over formats adds any additional pressure on him?

“It (vice-captaincy) doesn’t change much. When I bat out there, I still need to perform and I need to win matches for the team.

“But when you are out on the field, you need to make a bit more decisions, and that’s the only difference,” he noted.

Gill said the thinking process of Gambhir and Suryakumar are quite similar in terms of their vision for the team.

“I think everybody is on the same page. I have played under Surya bhai, and I think both their (Gambhir and Suryakumar) way of communication and thinking is similar.”

Post the retirement of Rohit from T20Is, Gill will have a new opening partner in Yashasvi Jaiswal, and the vice-captain was confident of making the alliance work.

“We really enjoy batting with each other, especially the kind of shots that we both play, we complement each other. And being the right-left combination…our partnership has been good in the matches we have played together.

“I think we have two 150-run partnerships. We have a very good understanding and communication between us and that’s very enjoyable,” he explained.

Gill also had a word of praise for Abhishek Nayar, the newly-appointed assistant coach of India, with whom he had worked at the Kolkata Knight Riders.

“He (Nayar) puts in a lot of effort on the ground. He stays with the players until they are satisfied with their own skills. It’s his biggest plus point,” he added.

A lot has been discussed and said so far about the catch taken by Suryakumar Yadav in the final of 2024 T20 World Cup against South Africa in Barbados. While many have been in awe of the stunner taken by the player in a tense situation in the game, some raised questions over the fairness of the catch. Suryakumar, who earlier spoke about how he managed to take that catch, has finally broken his silence over the controversy regarding it.

Needing 16 runs from the final over, South Africa had David Miller on the strike. The southpaw hit a wide full toss from Hardik Pandya but Suryakumar was able to catch the ball inside the ropes at long-off, realised it just as he went over the boundary, and then came back in to complete an astonishing catch.

Several video angles of the catch went viral on social media with many claiming that it was not a fair catch.

Some user on social media also claimed that the boundary cushion was pushed outside deliberately during the second innings to give the Indian team an unfair advantage.

“I didn’t touch the line when I caught the ball in the final match against South Africa. We can’t keep everyone happy. I did what occurred to me as correct. By the grace of God, I was there when the ball came towards me. I got a chance to take the catch. I am relishing that moment,” Suryakumar Yadav told media.

“I had practiced many times to take a catch like that one. During the match, my mind was calm. God gave me an opportunity to do well for the country,” he added.

For many old-time fans, the catch brought back memories of the unbelievable one taken by Kapil Dev in the 1983 World Cup final against the mighty West Indies. Viv Richards top-edged a Madan Lal delivery and Kapil ran sideways from mid-on to take the blinder.

India vs Pakistan, ODI World Cup 2023: Selection Dilemma, Toss Factor – India’s Areas Of Concern vs Pakistan https://artifexnews.net/india-vs-pakistan-odi-world-cup-2023-selection-dilemma-toss-factor-indias-areas-of-concern-vs-pakistan-4478166/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 06:29:40 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/india-vs-pakistan-odi-world-cup-2023-selection-dilemma-toss-factor-indias-areas-of-concern-vs-pakistan-4478166/ Read More “India vs Pakistan, ODI World Cup 2023: Selection Dilemma, Toss Factor – India’s Areas Of Concern vs Pakistan” »

Arch-rivals India and Pakistan will be up against each other in the ODI World Cup 2023 on Saturday. The high-profile game will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both the teams are undefeated in the ongoing tournament so far registering two wins in apiece. Talking about the Rohit Sharma led team, it defeated Australia by six wickets in its campaign opener and then routed Afghanistan by an eight-wicket margin in a one sided game. Their net run rate (NRR) is +1.500. (Scorecard | Points Table)

On the other hand, Babar Azam-led Pakistan defeated Netherlands by 81 runs in their opening game before handing a six-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in a high-scoring encounter in Hyderabad. The match also saw Pakistan registering the highest-ever successful ODI chase in World Cup history. Their NRR is +0.927.

While both India and Pakistan will be carrying good form, there are also some areas of concern for them going into the game. Here are the major issues that might trouble India –

The Selection Dilemma

Whether to give benched player Suryakumar Yadav a chance in the crucial match against Pakistan or not must be in the mind of the selection panel. The dilemma arises not only because of the abilities that Suryakumar possesses but also because Shreyas Iyer has failed to impress so far.

Another selection dilemma would be revolving around the possible inclusion of Mohammad Shami. The star pacer is yet to feature in any game this World Cup, but his familiarity with the Narendra Modi Stadium might benefit India more than any other player. The venue is Shami’s home ground in Indian Premier League where he plays for Gujarat Titans.

Rohit Sharma vs Shaheen Afridi

Though Rohit will be entering the Pakistan game on the back of a sensational 131-run knock, his struggle against left-arm pacers at the start of an inning is known to all. Considering the weightage Rohit’s wicket holds, India would want the star batter to continue his good form.

The Toss Factor

The toss could play a crucial role in the India vs Pakistan game. Chasing is comparatively easier at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which usually offers belter tracks. Under lights, the dew factor comes into play which gives an upper hand to the chasing side. If India bowl second, they definitely need to post a big total on the board to give a tough fight to Pakistan.

India vs Australia: Shreyas Iyer To Prove His Fitness, Suryakumar Yadav His Worth During Cricket World Cup Dress Rehearsal https://artifexnews.net/iyer-to-prove-his-fitness-surya-his-worth-during-wc-dress-rehearsal-4409775/ Thu, 21 Sep 2023 09:37:12 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/iyer-to-prove-his-fitness-surya-his-worth-during-wc-dress-rehearsal-4409775/ Read More “India vs Australia: Shreyas Iyer To Prove His Fitness, Suryakumar Yadav His Worth During Cricket World Cup Dress Rehearsal” »

Shreyas Iyer’s dodgy match-fitness will be put to ultimate test while Suryakumar Yadav’s desperation to alter a dismal ODI record adds a fascinating sub-text to India’s three-game series against Australia, which also serves as final dress rehearsal before the World Cup, beginning next month. With pillars of Indian batting – skipper Rohit Sharma and the brilliant Virat Kohli — resting for the first two games along with lead spinner Kuldeep Yadav and premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya, it will be head coach Rahul Dravid’s final chance to assess his bench strength.

The two Mumbai batters – both very different players from each other — are fighting their own little battles to be a part of the most important tournament of their lives.

The 28-year-old Iyer hasn’t played much cricket in last six months due to stress fracture surgery. A stiff back just before an Asia Cup match against Pakistan raised questions about his fitness.

As chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar has said that Iyer is good to go in the three games but whether his body is holding for 100 overs during the three games over next five days, will be observed keenly.

As much as Ishan Kishan has done his bit, India will need Iyer, the proverbial slayer of spin bowling in the middle overs during the World Cup.

For Surya, literally ‘SKY’ has been the limit in T20Is but before anything else, he perhaps need an uncluttered mind about what kind of role is he looking at in ODI cricket.

In today’s day and age, 27 ODIs are a lot and less than 25 average is neither a true reflection of his talent nor his capabilities.

Surya won’t be a starter in playing XI during tyhe World Cup but for his own good, he would want the team management to be assured that they didn’t make a wrong choice. Tilak Varma is hot on his heels and at 33, he won’t practically get a shot at another 50-over World Cup.

‘Ash’ is name of the game

The small quadriceps tear that left-arm spinner Axar Patel suffered has opened an unlikely door for 37-year-old Ravichandran Ashwin to play his third and what could likely be his last 50 over World Cup in case the former doesn’t recover in time.

Even two weeks back, Ashwin was not even in Indian team management’s radar and now the crafty veteran and his younger state-mate Washington Sundar are locked in a battle for an outside chance to make it to the squad.

If one goes by the buzz, Ashwin even if he doesn’t do well in the upcoming games, is way ahead of Washington in terms of probable chance of a look-in. Ashwin’s battle against David Warner and Steve Smith could be a fan’s delight.

The absence of Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya will give both Ashwin and Washington, a chance to showcase what they have to offer to the team.

But, there is every possibility that even if Ashwin does brilliantly, the team management will go with Axar if he recovers on time and plays the third ODI.

Usually, a small tear takes two weeks to heal and for a spinner, it is not a serious injury unlike for fast bowlers, where it takes more time before they can go full steam. Hence India will remain hopeful about getting Axar fit before the tournament proper starts.

Team Combination

With no Rohit at the top of the order, Ishan Kishan is likely to open with Shubman Gill while Kohli’s place is taken by Iyer, who needs game time.

India’s Asian Games-bound skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is in the squad more as a cover and could be released after the second game as he would link up with T20 team flying to Hangzhou on September 28.

India haven’t rested any of its fast bowlers but Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj may play two of the three games as three 50-over games have been slotted in five days and it also includes travel. Workload management of two pacers will be paramount.

Australia, the team to beat in World Cup

Australia despite losing 2-3 to South Africa recently had a quality series even as skipper Pat Cummins’ injury keeps bothering them.

But having won the last ODI series in India in March and being one of the international teams which has regularly cracked the 50-over code in sub-continent, there couldn’t have been a better preparation going into a marquee event where both countries will incidentally meet again on October 8.

Travis Head’s injury gave Marnus Labuschagne a chance which he has taken with both hands but it will be Australia’s bowling attack that will be put to test on three of the flattest decks that one comes across in sub-continent.

Squads

India: KL Rahul (C & WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

Australia: Pant Cummins (Captain), Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Adam Zampa, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, David Warner, Josh Heselwood, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanvir Sangha, Matt Short.

Match Starts: 1:30 pm.
