Former Indian cricket team batting coach Vikram Rathour praised Rohit Sharma as a shrewd captain and lauded him for his tactical acumen. During a recent interaction, Rathour addressed the popular story that Rohit is extremely forgetful and said that although he does have a tendency of misplacing his possessions, he never makes a mistake when it comes to gameplan. Earlier, Virat Kohli said that Rohit keeps forgetting his iPad and password during foreign tours and it has become a popular joke among fans and experts. Rathour agreed with what Kohli said but added his own verdict on Rohit.

“He might forget whether he has decided to bat or bowl at the toss, or his phone and iPad in the team bus but he never forgets his gameplan. He is very good at it and is a very shrewd tactician,” Rathour said on the podcast “Find a Way with Taruwar Kohli”.

“His first quality is that as a batsman, he is a phenomenal player. I think he is someone who understands his game really well. He always have a clear game plan.”

“He is a player’s captain. He is invested with the players heavily. I have never seen a captain, who is so invested in team meetings and strategies. He spends a lot of time on the team’s strategy. He is part of the bowlers’ meeting, batters’ meeting. He wants to sit with the bowlers and batters to try and understand what they are thinking. He invests a lot of time with the players,” he added.

Rathour also spoke about Rohit’s captaincy during the T20 World Cup 2024 final and said that there were some decisions taken by him which were unconventional but ended up clinching the victory.

“He is tactically very good as a captain. In the T20 World Cup final, he finished Bumrah’s over early. A lot of people must have questioned that decision but that decision put us in the situation, where 16 was needed in the last over. His tactical decisions on the field are spot on. Sitting outside It surprises you as a coach as well. We from outside sometimes think what he is doing but then you realise what he has done after a while,” he concluded.

Not just the Indian senior cricket team, changes are expected in the National Cricket Academy too, according to reports. The NCA in Bengaluru is an important institution in Indian cricket. Several age group camps are held here under top coaches while contracted senior team members also come here as part of their rehabilitation process in case of injury. From November, 2021, former Indian cricket team batter VVS Laxman was the NCA head. He replaced Rahul Dravid in the role. Traditionally, the NCA head sometimes even travels with the national team on several tours.

But now, according to a report in the Times of India, VVS Laxman is reluctant to continue in the role and is being courted by Indian Premier League side Lucknow Super Giants for the role of head coach. His contract ends in August and he is not seeking a renewal, according to multiple reports. The report added that former Indian cricket team batting coach Vikram Rathour, who was part of the support staff of the 2024 T20 World Cup, will be the likely successor.

“It is very likely that you may see Rathour heading NCA. For now, a call on VVS Laxman’s contract renewal is pending but the conversation from his side is not positive,” a report in Sports Tak quoted a source as saying.

“Rathour might be asked to take charge at NCA. BCCI secretary (Jay Shah) after the ICC meeting is likely to have a word with VVS to understand his side,” the source added.

Recently, Laxman praised Rahul Dravid’s efforts in India winning the T20 World Cup.

“When he (Dravid) lifted the World Cup, I thought it was a great gesture by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to hand over that trophy, and the way he celebrated lifting that trophy showed how much it meant to each one of them. The amount of hard work they put in. The celebration told the bigger story behind this victory,” Laxman said in a video posted by BCCI on X.

Team India also finished as runners-up in the ICC 50-over World Cup, 2023 hosted in India & the ICC World Test Championship in 2023 hosted in England.”

“Apart from the team’s dominance in bilateral series at home, Dravid’s dedication to nurturing young talent and instilling discipline and sportsmanship in the team has been exemplary.”

“I’m Not Happy”: India Coach’s Blockbuster Take On Virat Kohli’s Lean T20 World Cup Run https://artifexnews.net/im-not-happy-india-coachs-blockbuster-take-on-virat-kohlis-lean-t20-world-cup-run-5941212/ Sat, 22 Jun 2024 01:53:30 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/im-not-happy-india-coachs-blockbuster-take-on-virat-kohlis-lean-t20-world-cup-run-5941212/ Read More ““I’m Not Happy”: India Coach’s Blockbuster Take On Virat Kohli’s Lean T20 World Cup Run” »

Virat Kohli has been “challenged” in the ongoing T20 World Cup but his lean run is allowing the less experienced players to step up and contribute to the team’s cause, India batting coach Vikram Rathour said on Friday. India outplayed Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval here on Thursday to make a perfect start to their Super 8s campaign. However, Kohli was tested once again in the powerplay and ended up with a run-a-ball 24, his first double digit score in the tournament.

“I’m not happy. I would love it if he gets going and scores more runs,” Rathour said when asked about the team’s unbeaten run in the event without Kohli’s contribution.

“But yeah, it is good when you are challenged at times. You know, the guys who are not getting too much of batting in India sometimes, they are the ones who put up scores today and our middle-order came to play. So, it was good to see,” he said.

Rishabh Pant was impressive while Suryakumar Yadav took the game away from Afghanistan with a sublime fifty.

India will play Bangladesh in Antigua on Saturday. The squad has four spinners and considering the conditions in the Caribbean, it makes the team stronger.

“We’ve always had depth as a team, I believe. But yeah, these conditions maybe suit us more because we can afford to play two or three spinners at times. So that I believe can be our best team. That is our strength.

“It feels like…somebody like Axar (Patel) playing at eight gives you a lot of confidence because he can bat and he’s bowling really well at the moment. So, it does give you a lot of options,” he said.

The former India opener also expected the conditions in the Caribbean to be much better than they were in New York where India played three games.

“We already played in the worst possible conditions in New York. So, anything after that is feeling good only. So, I am expecting wickets to be better (here),” said Rathour.

Bangladesh are coming into the game after a loss to Australia and are one of the easier teams in the tournament.

But Rathour said India will not leave anything to chance.

“They’re a good unit. They have a lot of guys who can spin the ball and they are good in certain conditions. And these conditions do suit them a little as a team I think because the wickets seem to have a bit of help for the spinners and they do have spinners in their team.

“But again, in this format I think every team is a tough team. I don’t believe any contest in T20 cricket is an easy contest,” he added.

India batting coach Vikram Rathour said their batters have the skills to post a big score against the Shaheen Shah Afridi-led bowling unit. Pacers Afridi and Haris Rauf had rocked the Indian top order in their Group A league match here on Saturday, reducing them to 66 for 4 inside 15 overs. “We will try to bat better in that (Super 4) match. (In the last match) the conditions and situation were different. They are a good bowling attack. It is not like we can’t play them (Pakistan pacers). They are a good bowling attack and on certain days they will have an edge. When we get a start, our batters are capable of putting up a big score,” Rathour said at the post-match press conference after India defeated Nepal by 10 wickets on Monday.

Rathour was chuffed to see Ishan Kishan responding to the team’s guiding philosophy of flexibility with a mature knock against Pakistan.

Kishan, who batted at No. 5 for the first time in his career, made 82 off 81 balls against Pakistan. He shared a 138-run alliance with Hardik Pandya to help India post 266 but the match was eventually rained off.

Rathour said it is a good sign for India to have two very good batters in Kishan and KL Rahul to choose from for the middle-order slot.

“Ishan played really well against Pakistan. KL Rahul has done well for the team in the last two years. It is a good problem to have…we have two very good players to choose from.

“It is better to have such players to select from rather than having two struggling batsmen,” said Rathour.

Rathour said India needed to consider conditions while deciding to include either four specialist bowlers or three outright bowlers and one bowling all-rounder in the playing 11.

“Shardul does give depth (in batting), and he bowls as well. Shami is a better bowler but our batting will be compromised a bit (if he gets picked). But there will be some matches where we need to go with an out-and-out pace line-up. When we play on a pitch where we need an extra spinner that option is also available in Axar (Patel). So, it is good that we have a team that can play against all comers,” Rathour signed off.

“How I Want To Play…”: Rohit Sharma’s ‘High Risk’ Revelation Ahead Of Asia Cup 2023 https://artifexnews.net/how-i-want-to-play-rohit-sharmas-high-risk-revelation-ahead-of-asia-cup-2023-4339261/ Tue, 29 Aug 2023 10:56:20 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/how-i-want-to-play-rohit-sharmas-high-risk-revelation-ahead-of-asia-cup-2023-4339261/ Read More ““How I Want To Play…”: Rohit Sharma’s ‘High Risk’ Revelation Ahead Of Asia Cup 2023” »

Rohit Sharma traded caution with aggression to add a different dimension to his batting and the Indian skipper is happy with the results even if it means not getting those daddy hundreds. At the end of the 2019 World Cup, Rohit had scored 27 hundreds but in the last four years he could add only three more centuries to his tally. The captain largely believes that this is because of the high-risk game he has adopted. “I wanted to take more risks, which is why my numbers are slightly different now,” Rohit told PTI during an exclusive interview. “My (ODI) strike-rate (during this period) has increased but the average has dipped a bit. This is exactly what our batting coach (Vikram Rathour) was telling me, ‘You have scored big runs because of the way you batted all these years and in the last few years, it (big runs) has not happened because you are taking risk,” the skipper added.

Rohit is the only player to have scored three double hundreds — 209 (vs Australia, 2013), 264 (vs Sri Lanka, 2014) and 208* (vs Sri Lanka, 2017).

His last 150-plus knock came in 2019 against the West Indies in Vizag.

Rohit said that he had to compromise somewhere down the line.

“My career strike-rate is around 90 (89.97) but in past couple of years, if you look at my scores and take the strike-rate into consideration, it has been around 105-110. So somewhere you had to compromise. It is not possible to have a 55 average and a 110 strike-rate.” This high-risk game is also a process of his self-discovery, said Rohit.

“It was purely my choice. My usual batting is still my patent, but I wanted to try something else. I am very happy with the result.”

In fact, he had communicated his change of approach to the team management.

“Everyone wants to bat long and score those 150s and 170s. I still want to do that, but it is always nice to do something that you have not done. It only adds up in your list of batting abilities. Unless you do it, you won’t know it.

“I know if I play high risk shots, I will get out few times but I didn’t bother. This was communicated by me to the management that this is how I want to play.” An extension of that was the kind of tracks that India team has played Test matches on at home. They weren’t exactly batting-friendly, and the Indian skipper has been the team’s most consistent Test batter of late.

“Look at my recent Test innings in India. I can tell you that batting in India is much more difficult now than batting overseas, especially in the last 2-3 years. “The pitches that we have played on, it is more challenging than overseas. That’s why we haven’t spoken about runs and averages of batting unit. All of us agreed that we want to play on challenging pitches. I don’t want to worry about what kind of averages we finish with.

“That is how I think but different players will have different thought processes, and I don’t want to change that. I am going to play on pitches that suit our bowlers,” he declared.

He has captained Mumbai Indians for 11 years and is leading the national team for nearly two years now.

So do captains have shelf life? “There is no such thing as shelf life,” he replied with conviction.

“You get a responsibility, you produce a result and more important is if you are happy with the responsibility that you have been entrusted with. This is more important questions than the shelf life.” He is a planner but also likes to trust his gut instinct.

“I am a person who goes with the flow. What I feel right now, I would want to do without thinking about what I want to do five or six months later. I like to take things as they come but prepare according to what is in store in the future.”
