Barcelona sacked coach Xavi Hernandez on Friday after the Catalan giants failed to win a trophy this season. Xavi will take charge of the team’s final La Liga match on Sunday at Sevilla before departing. “Barcelona president Joan Laporta has told Xavi Hernandez he will not continue as coach for the 2024-25 season,” said Barcelona in a statement. Former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Hansi Flick is heavily tipped to replace Xavi.

In January, Xavi said he would leave at the end of the season but, after a run of strong form, in April he and president Laporta agreed the coach would stay for the next campaign, with his contract expiring in June 2025.

However, the situation quickly changed with Spanish media reporting Laporta was angered by Xavi’s comments suggesting it was hard for the financially-hamstrung club to compete with Real Madrid and other elite European sides.

“Barcelona want to thank Xavi for his work as coach, which adds to his unmatchable career as a player and the captain of the first team, and wish him all the best in the future,” continued Barcelona’s statement.

“In the coming days, Barcelona will reveal the new coaching structure for the first team staff.”

Barcelona won La Liga last season but were not able to successfully defend the title in the current campaign.

They were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Paris Saint-Germain, were hammered by Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final and lost to Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey.

Fermin Lopez Double Earns Barcelona Win At Relegated Almeria https://artifexnews.net/fermin-lopez-double-earns-barcelona-win-at-relegated-almeria-5682137/ Fri, 17 May 2024 05:16:15 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/fermin-lopez-double-earns-barcelona-win-at-relegated-almeria-5682137/ Read More “Fermin Lopez Double Earns Barcelona Win At Relegated Almeria” »

Young Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez struck twice to secure his team a hard-fought 2-0 win at Almeria on Thursday in La Liga. The 21-year-old reached 10 goals for the season in his breakthrough campaign on a night Barcelona struggled but eventually overcame their already-relegated opponents. In the hours before the game Spanish media reported Barcelona president Joan Laporta did not travel to the match in Almeria because he was unhappy with coach Xavi Hernandez’s pre-match comments.

Xavi had highlighted the club’s financial difficulties in comparison to the strength of new Spanish champions Real Madrid.

“They haven’t told me anything personally… we travelled with the sporting vice-president, more directors, all normally,” Xavi told reporters.

“I said what I think is real, that we will fight for all the trophies, with a lot of hope, with ambition, but that the situation is not easy.

“We are working very well, the club most of all, to change this situation.”

In January, with the team struggling badly, the coach said he would leave at the end of the season. He changed his mind in April after the team had gone on a strong run, despite being knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals.

Los Blancos took the title back out of Barcelona’s hands without breaking a sweat, suffering just one defeat and winning with four games to spare, while reaching the Champions League final.

For Barcelona it is a trophyless season but the Catalans are close to securing second place, ahead of upstarts Girona, third and now four points behind.

Lopez’s goals did the job in the south-east of Spain but it was far from a vintage performance from Barcelona against their relegated, rock-bottom opponents.

They took the lead after 14 minutes, with Lopez showing his knack for arriving in the area with perfect timing to reach Hector Fort’s cross and nod home.

‘Fight for second’

Leo Baptistao missed the hosts’ best chance of the first half, firing wide when well placed.

Lamine Yamal threatened as Barcelona sought a second, while Adri Embarba fired against the upright at the other end.

Anthony Lozano fired off-target with the goal at his mercy, demonstrating some of the issues Almeria have had this season.

Lopez doubled Barcelona’s lead after 67 minutes with a well-taken finish from Sergi Roberto‘s cut-back and that was enough to kill off Almeria’s hopes of taking anything from the game.

“I’m happy to help the team with goals but above all for the win,” Lopez told Movistar.

“We will fight for second until the end, it’s our objective now.”

Earlier Betis and Las Palmas shared the spoils in an entertaining battle which finished 2-2, with a point not entirely pleasing either side.

The Canary Islanders, 14th, are six points clear of the relegation zone and if Pejino had scored a last gasp chance, they would now be safe.

Betis lost two points in the tussle for Europa League football against Real Sociedad and had key playmaker Isco hobble off after taking a knock to the calf.

Real Sociedad beat Valencia 1-0 to jump into sixth place, a point ahead of Betis, seventh, with the sides meeting in Seville on Sunday in a crunch clash.

Youngster Fermin Lopez rescued Barcelona a 2-2 draw at Real Mallorca on Tuesday which extended his team’s La Liga lead, even though the champions dropped two points. Barcelona came from behind twice to secure a draw, Vedat Muriqi opening the scoring for the hosts early on, before Raphinha pulled them level. However Abdon Prats sent Mallorca ahead again and 20-year-old Lopez levelled with a firm drive on his second appearance for the club. Girona and Real Madrid, second and third, face Villarreal and Las Palmas respectively on Wednesday.

“These careless mistakes cannot happen again,” Xavi told DAZN.

“We have to improve. Last year we were so solid and concentrated a lot in defence.

“Today we were not bad but these are two mistakes which should not be happening — because of these errors we lost two points today.”

With Sevilla visiting on Friday in La Liga and next Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Porto on the horizon, Xavi decided to shuffle his pack.

The coach benched Robert Lewandowski for the first time, with Ferran Torres playing up front, and gave defender Inigo Martinez his first start alongside fit-again Ronald Araujo.

Pedri and Frenkie de Jong‘s injury absences left the coach with little chance of rotating in midfield.

Javier Aguirre’s Mallorca have not started the season well but knew just how to dig in and frustrate the hosts at Son Moix, with Rafa Benitez’s Celta Vigo giving them the blueprint last weekend, despite Barca’s late comeback win.

The hosts went ahead after eight minutes through target man Muriqi, who finished from Antonio Sanchez’s cut-back, after Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen gave the ball away in his own box with a poor pass.

Joao Felix and Torres narrowly failed to reach dangerous Raphinha crosses, before the Brazilian winger took things into his own hands to level.

The former Leeds United forward drilled home from outside the area to pull Barcelona back into the game.

However the Catalans quickly fell behind again, coming undone all too easily. Abdon Prats ran on to a flick-on from a goal kick and slid an effort past the onrushing Ter Stegen.

‘Making it too easy’ – “The game was blocked up for us from the start, we suffered more counter attacks than we wanted,” Barca midfielder Oriol Romeu told DAZN.

“We’ve had two games in a row which we’re not happy with and we have to improve, we’re making it too easy (for our opponents).”

Barcelona started the second half at a quicker pace and Xavi soon sent on veteran striker Lewandowski as well as youngsters Lopez and Lamine Yamal.

The latter duo made a swift impact, with Yamal tumbling in the box under a challenge from Jose Copete, although no penalty was given.

However soon 16-year-old starlet Yamal fed Raphinha, who cut the ball back for Lopez to smash home to level to clinch a point that could prove crucial in the long run.

“We played against a great team but when you fight and you scrap, luck is on your side,” Muriqi told DAZN.

“I think that the result is fair.”

Earlier Sevilla thumped bottom-of-the-table Almeria 5-1 in one of their best performances under coach Jose Luis Mendilibar.

After a poor start to the season, this emphatic victory provisionally raises the Andalusians to mid-table.
