Shubman Gill can wrap up his first series win as India captain today as the team take on Zimbabwe in the fourth T20I of the five-match series. India head into the contest with a 2-1 lead. After a shock defeat in the first game, India bounced back in tremendous style with a 100-run win. The third T20I was a closer affair, with a valiant Zimbabwe falling just 23 runs short. Ahead of a decisive fourth T20I, let’s take a look at India’s possible XI for the game.

1. Shubman Gill (c) – The captain stays, having been India’s top run-scorer in two of the three T20Is, including a solid 66 in the previous T20I.

2. Yashasvi Jaiswal – Having returned from the third T20I, Jaiswal contributed 36 off 27 balls and will surely keep his place in the side.

3. Abhishek Sharma – The swashbuckling southpaw may have been demoted to no. 3, but there is no case for him to be dropped for the rest of the series after his exceptional century in the second T20I.

4. Ruturaj Gaikwad – The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain has quietly adapted well to middle-order duties, and narrowly missed out on a second successive half-century in the third T20I. Gaikwad is India’s leading run-scorer in the series so far.

5. Sanju Samson (wk) – Another player who joined after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 celebrations, Samson should keep his place in the XI as the wicket-keeper batsman.

6. Rinku Singh – Rinku Singh showed his finishing power in the second T20I with a 22-ball 48, and will keep his place in the side.

7. Shivam Dube – Despite playing every game for India in the T20 World Cup, Dube is expected to continue in the XI against Zimbabwe, being one of the more senior players in the squad.

8. Washington Sundar – Washington is making a great case for a regular India spot in the post-Ravindra Jadeja era in T20Is, having impressed with both bat and ball so far in the series. He finished with figures of 3/15 and won the ‘Player of the Match’ in the third T20I.

9. Ravi Bishnoi – The leg-spinner was the world’s no. 1 T20I bowler not too long ago, and will surely play every match in the series.

10. Tushar Deshpande – With Avesh Khan going for runs in the third T20I, a debut could be on the horizon for CSK star Tushar Deshpande.

11. Khaleel Ahmed – The left-arm seamer has been brilliant up front, and showed his class once again in the third T20I, giving away just 15 runs in his four-over spell.

Receiving the iconic blue Team India cap for the first time is an honour very few get to experience. But the moment was made even more special for Riyan Parag, as he was presented his first India cap by his own father, before making his debut in India’s first T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare. Riyan Parag’s father, Parag Das, is a former first class cricketer for Assam. Riyan also became the first-ever player from Assam to play for the Indian cricket team.

Parag finished as the third-highest run-scorer in IPL 2024, with 573 runs for the Rajasthan Royals, who finished third. His tremendous season, batting at no. 4, made it impossible for the selectors to ignore him, as a young India squad was picked for the five-match T20I tour to Zimbabwe.

Parag wasn’t the only one to make his debut in the first T20I, as Abhishek Sharma and Rajasthan Royals teammate Dhruv Jurel also received their first T20I caps.

Parag will have to make a stellar impression in the Zimbabwe series to remain a fixture in India’s T20I setup. This is because the world’s no.2-ranked batsman Suryakumar Yadav currently holds the no. 4 spot in India’s batting lineup in the shortest format.

India vs Zimbabwe

This is India’s first series after their historic 2024 T20 World Cup victory in the Caribbean and USA. After the tournament, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20Is, leaving the door open for youngsters to stake a claim as a regular part of India’s T20I XI.

Shubman Gill will be captaining Team India for the first time. It’s his first taste of international captaincy, having already become Gujarat Titans’ captain ahead of IPL 2024.

Three players from India’s T20 World Cup-winning team also feature in the Zimbabwe tour squad: Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube.

Shubman Gill-led Team India takes on Zimbabwe in the first T20I of the five-match series, starting June 6, Saturday. Gill has been handed over the duty to lead a young Indian team after the senior players have been rested for the tour. It is worth noting that Rohit Sharma, India’s former captain in T20Is, called time on his career in the format after team’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados last month. The likes of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja also quit T20Is, giving more youngsters a chance to hone their skills and shine for India.

Here is what we think could be India’s playing XI in first T20I vs Zimbabwe –

Shubman Gill: The star batter will be opening the batting for India and will be having the added responsibility of captaincy.

Abhishek Sharma: The swashbuckling southpaw has been given his much-needed opportunity. He is set to make his India debut in the first T20I after duly impressing in Indian Premier League 2024.

Ruturaj Gaikwad: A reliable batter Gaikwad is set to bat at number 3 spot for India, confirmed Gill on the eve of the game. Gaikwad is among the most experienced players in the squad.

Riyan Parag: The right-handed middle-order batter could make his India debut in the first T20I. He is known for his hard-hitting abilities.

Rinku Singh: The star finisher missed out on a spot in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad. Rinku will now aim to continue doing his job for the team in the format.

Jitesh Sharma (wk): The wicketkeeper-batter has failed to impress in the limited opportunities he has got so far. Jitesh has scored only 100 runs in 9 T20I matches. However, his hard-hitting abilities could see him get an edge over Dhruv Jurel.

Washington Sundar: Another experienced campaigner Washington will be aiming to make an impact with his all-round talent. He is a quality right-arm spinner and can also play handy knocks.

Ravi Bishnoi: The leg-spinner could trouble even the best of batters. He is expected to make things really hard for the Zimbabwe batters.

Khaleel Ahmed: After a splendid IPL 2024 season, the left-arm pacer was added to Team India’s list of reserves for T20 World Cup but he got no opportunity to play.

Avesh Khan: The right-arm pacer is an experienced bowler. With so much of competition in India’s main team, Avesh would be eager to make a case for himself.

Mukesh Kumar: For his pinpoint accuracy and discipliine in bowling, Mukesh could get a chance ahead of Harshit Rana and Tushar Deshpande.
